Sir, a very nice representative of past great gun making by the Colt Company. Your Colt here dates years before WW1 (1914). These great old six-guns were called by some gun folks as the "left-handed" Colt Revolvers. Left-handed because of the counter-clockwise cylinder rotation. I really love the ballistics of the .41 Long Colt Round. A big 200-gr. lead bullet, that had a muzzle distant specs of 750-feet per second @ 250 Foot Pounds of Energy. This round mirrored the specs of the old .38 Special "Super Police" Load, whose specs was similar to the .41 Long Colt. In the very early years of my lawman's career I knew a very elderly cop, that had one of these antiques in his duty holster. Yup, a Colt Model 1896 D.A. .41 Long Colt, with a 4.5" barrel, and the original factory bakelite grips. I found out later those grips identified this Colt DA .41 as the "Navy Model", from the emblem in the grip panel. The New Navy/New Army D.A. .41 or .38 revolvers were distinguished by the factory emblem in each grip panel. That was the only difference. I was riding the adjourning beat that borderline the county he worked in and mine. Our PD issue was the S&W Model 10-5, a blue steel. 4-inch bbl. service revolver. This was in 1971, the first year of my PD service, and I thought we were behind times with our .38 Specials. This old Colt was this cop's personally owned duty revolver. I don't know if any ammunition companies in 1971 were selling the .41 Long Colt ammo. So his ammo was probably dated also. On Day Shift we would sometimes meet at the county line in a very rural area and cap off a few rounds at coke cans. He was a good shot at most law enforcement combat ranges. I tried his Colt out a couple of times. The double-action pull was a nightmare for someone use to the smooth trigger-pull of the modern day S&W Model 10. Later I was to learn that this early produced Colt double-action revolver all had stiff trigger-pulls. Don't know if a Colt this old (1896) could have its trigger lightened, I would have tried to find me a "Old School" gunsmith to do the job, if I were to use it for home defense or on the road, while traveling. I remember that cop from 1971 like yesterday. He was in his late 60's when I first met him. He would pass away several years later from a heart attack. He was still carrying that Colt New Navy Revolver at his passing (1974).

My grandpa told me that, growing up in the 1930s, his dad had an SAA in .44-40, and a Colt DA in .41 LC. I remember him saying the .41 could hit point-of-aim at 100 yards, and the .44-40 couldn't!

@@maxrrogers seems like close to original specs:they originally shot around 750 fps as I remember!I would have suggested loading hotter as I usually do myself! As far as I learned people usually greatly underestimate their antiques in terms of loads that they actually can withstand..Although here I must say that it always depends on the particular model and how well it is built:for example let's take the very similar looking two antique "suicide special" revolvers both chambered in my favorite .32 rimfire long:H&R "Aetna" or H&A "Dictator" and compare these to Iver Johnson "defender"!It's really hard to tell the difference between the three from the first glance:all three are 5 shot single action.32rf long spur trigger nickel plated revolvers with even the same barrel length of 2.5 inches! But I keep loading the defender with such an extremely highly energetic loads that believe it or not but the muzzle energy that I get from it is between 450 and 480 joules:the muzzle energy of a factory ammunition that you get from a Glock-17 is between 480 and 500 joules! With a modern 9mm smokeless ball ammo and a 4.5 inch barrel instead of 2.5 inch the energy is only slightly bigger-but the defender perfectly holds and has no signs of any damage caused by the loads that I use!For now I already put over 250 and most likely closely to 3 hundred such rounds through it!But with the Aetna just one load that was only 75% of the loads that I use in defender was enough to blow it's cylinder up:as I found out that it's cylinder walls were as much as three times thinner than in defender so here is the result! So anyway the other important remark in this case is that with the larger caliber the guns tend to allow less tolerance for overloads than the smaller caliber..For example one can load the good old .32 rimfire with two or three and even more times the original load and it will not get any damage to it even after several hundred rounds-no problem! The .41 LC should have no problems with loads that will be 1.5 times or even twice the original energy for it-so that is over 1000 fps for instance! And when it comes to things like .455 Webley MK1 those really don't like even 140% factory load because of the large caliber..
