I took out my old Colt Detective Special and was surprised at the accuracy you can get from a well-made snub-nosed 38.

Used my issued Colt DS in a 1974 gunfight, reloading under fire, with three armed robbery suspects. It did drop one suspect, one surrendered on scene and the third one was arrested the following day seeking treatment for a GSW at a local hospital.

It's a great revolver in every way. Too bad Colt no longer makes it. All the older detectives carried ether the Colt Detective Special or S&W Model 10 snubbies loaded with 110 grain +P.

Back in the '90s, I transferred from the Border Patrol to the Marshals Service (back then, both services were under the USDOJ umbrella). My service weapon in the Border Patrol was a DAO Baretta .40. In the Marshals Service my duty weapon was a Ruger GP100 3” (although you could carry anything from a .38 to a .44 special, no single-action weapons were allowed). For some weird issue, my Ruger kept on biting my shooting finger, so once I graduated, I got home and got my S&W 65 3” (I was violating our weapon’s policy because the GP100 had a transfer bar as a safety and the S&W 65 did not). It took me about four months to get my Beretta DA/SA to arrive. A fellow deputy had a Colt Detective Special, which I shot and felt in love with. I could not make him part with it, and the ones in the gun dealers were asking a ridiculous amount of money, so I bought a like new S&W 638 which I carry from time to time (I retired from the USMS in late December 2017 after 30 years of combined military and civilian law enforcement). I finally bought a Colt Detective after my retirement a couple of years ago, and it shoots beautifully. Best regards, and stay safe. 🙏

The DS was THE gun for off duty when I started LE in the late 70's, along with the Cobra. One thing was the hammer catching on clothing, but as it turned out the little red plastic switch covers, on the patrol car radio's panel switch's pulled off and fit the hammer perfectly. Infact the Sheriff did an inspection once and asked why all the radio switches were bare......LOL. They are so collectable now worth alot of money I would not sell one but keep it as a safe queen and investment.

I have the gen 3 which I got in 1973. I still carry it today. Since most gun fights take place in 7 yards or less it’s more than capable

fitz may have built 75 actual fitz guns. pro tip… the bullets go wherever the front sights pointed when the hammer falls.

I don't care for the model that you have of the Colt Detective Special, but prefer those that were made in the 1960s before the modifications! Great in your face wheel gun for self protection!

I have a Gen-4 with the Pachmayr grips made in 1994.. Believe the Gen-4s were made in 93, 94 & 95. Bought it lightly used around that time. Believe I paid about 150.00 for it.
