A neighbor of my father has a Colt "Police Positive" It sports a 6 inch barrel , blued and in 38 long or 38 Colt Special. Her father was a Deputy Sheriff here in Montana from 1935 till 1950.
@1957Shep4 жыл бұрын
They made many different variations of the Police Positive. The long barreled ones are not very common in 38 caliber. They even made a Target version with adjustable sights with a 6 inch barrel. But those were 22s or 32s.

That revolver looks to be in excellent condition for it's age, that's one I'd be proud to own.

It`s one that is a little out of the ordinary. The Police Positive Special was a lot more common.

I just bought a box of .38 S&W, I pick up obsolete ammo when I find it. A couple weeks ago I bought a very nice PP in .38 Special, the difference is readily apparent. The Colt PP is a sweet revolver.

I picked up a pretty good condition Colt New Police 32 from the same guy I got this gun from, and 5 other old Colts. The New Police is almost the same gun, just an older version. Not as nice of condition as this one, but it was made 1904. Good condition considering the age. Already had a New Police, but that one was kind of crudely refinished. I`ve already done a video with it, but it`s not scheduled to go live until Feb. 20th. I`ve been doing videos ahead now that I have the free time and while the weather is good.
@jakubfabisiak9810 Жыл бұрын
well, the saving grace of .32 long is that centerfire target revolvers are chambered in it, so at least getting .32 long wadcutters isn't too bad - easier than .38 S&W long anyway. Also - .32 long police positive was the gun used in Death Wish, while a .38 S&W PP like the one in the video (except nickel plated) was used by none other than Al Capone himself.

Today I bought a vintage box of .38 S&W ammo, it was rather expensive. The Colt PPs are very nice revolvers, I have five in various calibers, .22 to .38 Special, none in .38 S&W though.

I found some Fiocchi 38 S&W a few weeks ago. Didn`t even know Fiocchi loaded that caliber until I ran across it. At a gun show this past weekend I made a good ammo score. Found a couple boxes of 22 Remington Jet ammo for the S&W Model 53.

The 38 S&W has very little recoil. Very little power either. Not much more powerful than a 32 S&W Long or 22LR.

Nice colt , one shop has one in 32 they want 399 for it. I have some 38 s&w ammo I picked up after I got my terrier, the cylinder is shorter also. I had found some at a dunham's for $25 for 50 rounds , so I got what they had. Have a good day

I picked up 100 rounds of it last week made by Fiocchi. I didn`t even know Fiocchi loaded that caliber. Have not used any of it yet. But Fiocchi is good quality ammo. I`ve used their 30 Luger ammo. Good stuff.

I loved the video on a vintage Colt shooting the .38 s&w short caliber and I have a 1953 Smith & Wesson Regulation Police model in this same caliber but it holds only 5 rounds and has the diamond wood grips and 4 in. barrel and fixed front and rear sights and boy it's sure accurate out to 15 or 20 yards all day long !!! And yes I stock up on this ammo for it is hard find and expensive as well !!! But I have a nice supply of it on hand and only shoot it maybe twice a year !!!!

Fiocchi has started loading 38 S&W ammo. Decent quality and much cheaper than 38 S&W ammo made by Remington and Winchester.

Reloading always seems worth it to me especially for any of the revolver cartridges. Just reload progressively so you aren't wasting your time.
@1957Shep4 жыл бұрын
I`ve got a Dillion progressive press. Great for loading hundreds of rounds at a time. But if you are only loading 100 rounds, it takes longer to set it up than it does to load the ammo.
@GunFunZS4 жыл бұрын
@@1957Shep I usually loadmaster which is another progressive. It takes me between 5 and 15 minutes to change over calibers. But I hear you on sometimes not wanting to mess with it. I bet you starline makes the brass for 38 s&w. Last time I went shooting with my father-in-law he was using up some 38 Smith & wessons that he had from his father. about half of them with chamber in the 357.
@1957Shep4 жыл бұрын
If I would spring for some extra tool heads and powder measures for the press, it would speed things up a lot. That way I could leave the dies and measure in place and not have to reset everything each time. But for as many calibers as I load, that could get expensive in a hurry. The tool heads are not that expensive, but the powder measures are.
@GunFunZS4 жыл бұрын
@@1957Shep I know some people think this is heresy but you could certainly put elite Auto drum or Autodesk pro on a toolhead and not put too much money into it.

Have all military and police revolvers been converted to 38 special? Or is that only the case if the barrel also says 38 Special? Mine says 38 s&w. CTG on it. The longer drum seems to fit a .38 Special.
@1957Shep3 ай бұрын
Not sure I understand you. The Military & Police (M&P) model is a Smith & Wesson, not a Colt. The CTG marking means Cartridge. S&W made several different hand ejector models chambered for 38 S&W on the Improved I Frame, J Frame, and K Frame. The K Frame guns are 6 shot, the I & J were 5 shot. The K Frame guns are mostly identical to the normal S&W M&P revolvers except for the caliber and some of the markings. M&P revolvers chambered for 38 S&W were mostly for export. The most common is the Victory Model. Will have a V prefix on the serial number. Many Victory models have found their way back into the US over the years. And some have been converted to 38 S&W Special. Depending on how well the conversion was done, these might or might not be completely safe to fire with 38 Special ammo. The original 38 S&W chambering has a larger diameter chamber than a normal 38 Special chamber. 38 S&W and 38 S&W Special use the same diameter bullet, but the 38 S&W brass is slightly larger diameter than 38 S&W Special brass. The 38 S&W cartridge is also known by other names. Colt called it 38 Colt New Police or N. P. The Europeans called it the 38/200. Same cartridge but loaded with a heavier 200 grain bullet instead of the standard 148 grain loaded in the US. Always be careful of guns that have had a caliber conversion done on them. If whoever did the conversion knew what they were doing it`s probably fine. If they didn`t know what they were doing, maybe not.

@@1957Shep ext mit deiner Kamera übersetzen Thank you very much for the answer, but I haven't answered my question yet. My model is 6 shots and has a V engraving. The barrel is stamped "38 S&W". Another fine looking and shooting revolver Shep! Is having the longer cylinder for .38 Special what makes the model a Police Positive Special, or are there some other features that makes one a P P Special model? I hope someday to find both of the old British top-break service revolvers in .38 S&W caliber, an Enfield No. 2 Mk. I, and a Webley Mk. 4. I think I would prefer the Enfield to be one of the double-action only models without the hammer spur.

The Police Positive Special has a longer and heavier frame as well as a longer cylinder. Other wise they are pretty much the same.

I have a Police Positive in 38 S&W,, i love the gun, but it's a 1st issue gun made in early 1900 and it's only a 4 inch barrel,, i prefer a 5 or 6 inch barrel, & it's been shot so much that it's just getting to the point of starting to go out of time, the cylinder is locki ng up late,, i called Colt before they sold out to CZ arms and Colt said they no longer repair them that it was obsolete,, the real problem is with Colt because they didn't have any quality gunsmiths anymore...those guns were hand fitted one at the time, each piece hand fitted like a swiss watch,,& young incompetent juvenile gunsmiths just can't cut the mustard, they don't know how to do anything but smack on something with a hammer, or overtighten a small screw with an oversized driver...it's sad

You might try this guy. soapcreekarmory.com/ facebook.com/soapcreekarmoryguns/ Probably a question of if he could find parts. Sounds like your gun needs a new hand, but it could be something else. And I doubt Josh could tell you exactly what is needed until he took the gun apart to see exactly what is worn. But it couldn`t hurt to give him a call and ask if he wanted to take a crack at it. These revolvers were issued to US troops in the Philippines and soldiers found out that they were very underpowered. Basically useless.
