This scares me to death.. I raised Appaloosas for years and the most dangerous time for a foal is weaning. I have seen babies run blindly into trees, fencing, Barns you name it. I’m glad to see that they have a babysitter (the grey Gelding) but I would never put them in a wire fence the first few days.. a round pen or small paddock with metal or wooden rails or ideally vinyl. Two or three days is the longest I ever had to leave one in a small lot. They typically settle quickly. It also looks like this baby is only a few months old, 3ish.. it’s simply my opinion but I feel it’s best to wait until 5 to 6 months depending on the foal.

I’m not saying that all horse owners are qualified to say when weaning is appropriate, but just because you’ve owned a horse doesn’t make you an expert, and just because you’ve never owned one doesn’t mean you’re not knowledgeable. For example I, who have never owned a horse, am more knowledgeable about them than my friend, who has owned them since she was seven. It’s got nothing to do with how long we’ve owned them, I’m just more passionate.

Lighten-up, folks. That critter isn't even 1/4th the way up to "frantic". That behavior barely counts as "anxious". If it's being weaned, this isn't the first day of it. If it is temporarily separated from its dam for some reason, I suspect it isn't the first time. The youngster is nicely put-together and in fine condition... But that fence is the stuff of nightmares.

@@cathyl2338 Barbed wire isn't suitable for horses. *Loose* barbed wire is even worse. If the horse manages to get tangled with it, the results can look like they can in second in a chainsaw fight. Unless mom's got some sort of health issue when it comes to caring for her foal, isn't it better to let her decide when the foal should be weaned? I mean, wild and domesticated mares have been doing this process for thousands of years. It seems the mare would be a better judge of such situations than a human would be.
@DoubleDogDare546 жыл бұрын
If things were done your way the mare would have a yearling and 2YO following her at the same time she had a new foal. Then you'd have to try to removed much bigger bangtails from their mamas just so you could start training them. That would be a dangerous mess as yearlings and 2YOs would object just as strongly to being yanked away from mummsy as one that is 4 or 5 months old and much smaller. Safer and easier to wean them when they are much younger. At 4/6 months they are eating on their own and don't need milk any longer. And I'd rather wrastle with a weanling at that age than deal with a much larger horse screaming and throwing a fit over being separated from its momma.
@benben97876 жыл бұрын
That is a yearling it has to be weaned so it will learn to not drink it’s mother’s milk

Ideally, yes. However if a mare hasnt been bred back she may tolerate the baby nursing. Even for years. My rescue mare had a filly, she wasnt weaned until i got the mare. She was 3 years old and still nursing. When weaning time came, both had no idea what was going on. As far as a i know (i got the mare shipped sight unseen from across the country) the filly was alone for weaning. This colt has a buddy, who can help calm him down and teach him. Also, as mustang mare in the Pryor Mountains and was not bred back ( due to darting) and her colt nursed until he was 5. So if a mare isn't expecting another foal there is nothing to tell her to kick away the current baby.

Yes, mares usually do tend to wean their babies, normally when she is bred back to a stud. Although most trainers wean the foals at the age of 5/6 months or older, which is perfectly fine. The foal would be eating on it's own by then, and this foal seems to be old enough to be weaned, so the handler is doing nothing wrong. I also have horses, and wean my foals at 6+ months and no harm is done to them.
