1849 cap n' ball is best colt cap n' ball! I just wish uberti would make other barrel lengths for the 49 pocket like they do for the other pocket models. I think the 49 looks and handles best with the 5.5 inch barrel.

Sorry to keep commenting so much. If you want to see my favorite part on the gun with a human connection. Take the grip off, you can see the sn# written in pencil. On the inside of the grip. This was done on all colts with wood grips. most of the time there still visible. To me its such a connection to the past. Getting to see someones hand writing from over 160 years ago.

I have one , my son loves it. However before getting one , you should watch Blackie Thomas on it, they do have an issue with the hole in the nipple being too large and causing cap jams nearly every shot. It can be cured but I think they tried to make the hokes larger to have it fire more realiably, but just went too far. Also the biggest difference I see between these two is the price:)
@peacemaker-du4hz2 жыл бұрын
@@KevinSmith-os5yz I wonder if you could change out the nipples for new ones that would solve that issue? I know of a company that makes something called slick shot nipples ,another channel I watch swears by them but that could be just because they work on what he has
@snappers_antique_firearms2 жыл бұрын
@@KevinSmith-os5yz hi blackies video was on a uberti 62 pocket navy in 36. Not the 49 pocket in 31cal. Have you tried the aftermarket nipples. I dont own a replica 49 pocket only a original. But i have worked on several and didn't notice the nipples being too big. only on the pocket Navy's like blackies because they used the stock 51 navy nipples. The hammer spring tho on the replicas is very weak and even with aftermarket nipples. It will blow back. The biggest difference between the replicas and The Originals is gain rifling on the originals. Meaning the rifling starts out straight and then slowly starts to twist and then speeds up really fast at the end this keeps the lead from stripping on the rifling making for better accuracy. the replicas use regular rifling. The original 49 pocket you see in this video. I have made shots up to 80 yards with shooting cans. With replicas I can barely hit anything past 30 yards

Great to include Nate in this review. With all the scardie-cat hoopla about kids and guns, Nate demonstrates thoughtful, responsible handling of his revolver. Pretty soon, he'll have his own channel. A well presented overview and test! Both the Uberti Pocket Colt Pocket models and the Pietta 1863 Pocket Remington in 31 caliber are well made products. However some tweaking is needed to make them "Well Regulated". I am in the process of developing a solid stepped, healed Wadcutter for the Pietta Pocket Remington and the Uberti Pocket 31 caliber Colts. Which will offer the responsibile user the ultimate power factors in the 31 caliber especially for Trappers. Custom made molds will be available in the coming months.

Did the rifling on the Colt go in a different direction than the Uberti? I've also read that original Colt may have used progressive twist rifling where the replicas use a constant twist ratio. Can you confirm?
@snappers_antique_firearms2 жыл бұрын
Yes it does have gain rifling. The pocket models just don't have it as aggressively as say a 51 Navy or other models.
@snappers_antique_firearms2 жыл бұрын
@TiglathPileser3 look at the Colt closer you'll notice the end of the rifling is not in focus. I agree the photo does make it look like they're very similar. The gain rifling is very subtle until the very end of the rifling. The 49 is the least aggressive of all the Colts with its gain rifling.

Loved your video so much that i was inspired to get out my own original 1849 for comparison. Colt made about a quarter million of these little popguns over +- 25 years. And they made changes over time. Your sample has a serial # 14x,xxx mine is 24,xxx and dates to about 1853. The uberti replica is more like mine , the loading notch on my original is identical to the uberti, the sight notch on my hammer is tiny like your uberti, and the barrel pins are fixed solid on mine. So it seems the uberti replica is a very close copy of my early colt. My example is a non functioning relic but i think rather than restoring it , it would be more sensible to leave it as is and purchase a replica as a companion piece.
