TO ANYONE STRUGGLING WITH DEPTH IN YOUR MIX! Colt just gave a Masterclass on the bridge alone with the sound and visual example. Pay attention to the sound AND the visual of how the bridge path you walk on narrowing on your screen as you go back further from the microphone and camera. The rest of the video is of course stellar as well. Of course you nailed it Colt!

I have been watching many of your videos but I never commented. I couldn’t leave this video without a like and a comment. That is an excellent video. Thank you for simplifying this concept for us in a 12 minutes video.

Great video. Very informative. One other tool to help with depth would be a transient shaper. Turning down the transient attack also helps to push the sound back (similar to a compressor) Can also adjust the sustain.

This is fantastic and leaves me shaking my head wondering why I never thought about using HP/LP and width to create a sense of depth. I have always relied on only volume and reverb. Thanks a million, Colt!

This was explained really well. I have such a better understanding of depth now and how sound reacts from further away, especially how sound narrows when further away. I have often made the mistake of leaving the reverb too wide and it didn't emulate the effect quite how I liked. Great demonstration, Colt.

Great video. One more thing: further away the direct and reverb signal or reflections become one, i.e. no pre delay. The closer something is, there can be much more delay between the direct sound and the reverb.

This was a great example of getting depth in the mix. Now the complicated part is how to determine what is far back and what is closer to you as a listener. In almost all band situations the band is usually within a few feet of each other and you want all parts to be heard in proportions to allow all elements to be heard with the vocals usually up front. This concept is easier to use for background vocals or effect vocals as they are usually pulled further back in the mix. In a dense mix I feel that the hard part is being able mix it so all parts are being heard. I watched an older mixer explain that our ears can only discern 4-5 sounds at the same time and to try to limit those elements that are most important at different times during a mix to to be most apparent while having less important elements for that part of the song pushed further back or maybe muting them out of a particular part of the song. I am interested to hear your thoughts on this. You are an absolute pleasure to learn from.

Subscribed. Very few videos on this subject! I discovered eq as a way of moving things front to back but never considered compression as a factor. Of course, you are right! Congrats! Also the further back, the more mono-ised the sound source. Suggestion: Could you draw up a numeric pan/vol/rev value map for say vocal, BVs, drums & perc, bass, lead & rythmn gtrs, organ etc? Values for Pan range, Vol range, Rev range (default reverb, ie Hall), Tonal range Hz - kHz hi - lo pass points, compression values. Lot of work to do but a reference 'cheat sheet' would make 3-D mixing a breeze. Big cigar for the first person to come up with that! Don't say it can't be done folks because of course it can. You just need to apply some maths. It should be obvious that any event within a DAW has a math value and that all events in a musical piece happen over time. This is why the bpm value is so crucial. Front to back mixing has math values too, that's my proposed point. Volume has a range, eq has a range, echo and rev, chorus/flange etc. Human hearing has a range 20-20, eyesight also 20-20, everything resolves to maths, like it or not. A DAW is a number cruncher and the math process starts at the A/D converter in, and D/A converter out. Suck it up people! Lol! The hate I will get for this posting will be humungous!!! But if you don't agree, it's only because you haven't thought about it. Let's get those calculators out!
