Telefunken has more body and more forward sounding specially you can hear on Acoustic Guitar and Female Vocals. Warm should look into correcting their capsules response or transformers saturation characteristics or both.

If you're going to connect it via thunderbolt anyways, why not to connect the MTRX straight via thunderbolt? HDX is surpassed imo and I'm more than sure that AVID is going to replace it very soon.

Hi Colt , here Jan from the Netherlands, first off all resept for the way you worked you up in the music scene , the difference between America and Holland is , in the US is maked on your own allmost natural upgrowing. In Holland everbody involves with everybody , for example if you buy a piece of gear everybody has something to say about it ( oh no don,t buy that its no good , meanwhile they buy themselves) or they wanna become friends with you and see what you,re doing and sneeky take your spot with the clients , dutch people have very jealous karakter , so i keep my mouth shot don,t talk to anybody what you,re doing and money you make . They go under fee to get your client or they contact the dutch IRS with the accusation that your making money illegaly so the Dutch IRS is looking over shoulder everyday. Oh yeah almost forgot ,don,t get a dutch girlfriend or wife they don,t understand how this Businnes works. Greetings from Jan , i love your video,s .

True story. I asked a musical act to make sure they changed their strings on their instruments the day before they came into the studio and to be sure they stretched and broke them in a little bit. So they showed up and none of them listened to me. I should have just packed it in right then and there. Being in a somewhat desperate financial situation, I didn't and man did I regret it. 10 minutes in the bass player breaks the G string. He has no replacement strings so I provide him with one. 3 hours in, he breaks his A string that looked like it was on his bass since 1955. I provided a replacement. After 13 hours of bass tracks the band calls it a night. I spend about 9 hours the next day mixing down the tracks. The next day I spend 6 hours trying to make the bass sit in the mix without sounding overly compressed. Next day the lead singer and drummer arrive to receive the recordings (3 songs). I tell them to take the disc home and spin it for a couple of days and then get back to me with their feedback. The very next morning the singer and bass player show up. The bass player is furious and critical of his bass mix, demanding that I fix his sound in post. I solo his bass and point out that two strings are basically dead on his bass. He agrees and requests that I punch him in on a few bars here and there. I said okay, bring your bass in and we will try again pointing out that it is not going to be much better due to the string issues. He suggests that he use my bass which is completely a different brand, model etc. I explain that we can't improve what is there already and that no miracle was eminent. Eventually I relent and 6 hours later the bass track is just a complete trainwreck performance wise and sonically. The aggressive behaviour of the bass player has already tested and shredded my patience. The drummer arrives unannounced and demands another round of mixing. We could not "fix" in post the root of the problem that the bass player created with his shitty strings and snake oil remedy of using my bass to try and repair his disastrous choices. Eventually I punched the bass player out, gave the drummer they final mix that I was willing to be part of. I told the singer and drummer to take their disc and never darken my door step again. I told them to keep their money and just f-off. The next day the singer is back with a very small portion of the total amount of payment. He is apologizing and insisting I take the money. I put the money in his breast pocket and asked him to leave. He begins to cry and open the door to leave. I tell him to wait, fished out a box of Kleenex from a drawer, handed it to him and told him to go and never return. That was the last time I ever recorded another musical act. Lol

I don't record other music acts anymore. Too many cooks in the kitchen thinking they can polish turds. Plus they low ball and weasel out on the final payment. My gear has never disappointed me.

Thanks Colt, your channel is legit and full of really great insights! Personally , When I feel a mix may be done I like to listen out in the hall way to make sure nothing is jumping out. For low end I like to put on a reference track and move around my room feeling the low end and then do the same with the track I'm mixing. I also like to listen at super low volumes sometimes as I've always found that a great mix never falls apart even at the lowest of volumes.

Why shouldn't I stand my speakers (eg KEF Ls50 metas) on toilet rolls (6 high, 2 wide and 2 deep)? I'M NOT JOKING. Wouldn't the soft paper absorb any unwanted vibration/energy? Wouldn't it be as near as possible to floating on air? I stand my bass guitar amp on toilet rolls. The sound is cleaner - less boom. I've asked this question in a number of comment sections, and it's usually dismissed as being ridiculous. As I say - I'm not joking. I want an answer. 🧐

Great detailed vid. very interesting. and i feel you, i would pay whatever for the perfect workflow. im actually planning on doing so in a couple months lol. Personally, I have not used PT since i learned on it in college. Used cakewalk for years, but wasnt doint any hardware inserts at the time. As a Studio One user, the delay compensation is automatically detected and corrected within the external insert plugin itself. So i never had to worry about it, with any of my interfaces. But i can see how annoying that would have been. Congrats on being able to afford that joint lol. hope it works wonderfully for you

I listen with headphones with mixing on my DAW, but after making an MP3 and listening with the same headphones on my iPod (yes, I still have an iPod) the drums are just so low in the mix as to be almost inaudible.

Thank you for your two cents, a great piece of advice! Funny how as a live mixing engineer, I need to asses the sub relationship with the rest of the material every day, every venue by how I *FEEL* it, but I have never thought about it like this in the studio environment. Talk about connecting the dots! :D

I touch to woofer! I mix for a livestream where the control room is close to the auditorium. Not ideal, but it is what it is. Sometimes I touch to woofer to make sure the bass I’m hearing is in my mix and not resonating from the near by room.

Typically the mixes that suck are usually the source material. In my sphere I’m getting a lot of live, definitely NOT session level players and singers. And usually engineers that only have experience running and gunning live shows.

What you’re discussing here is literally the main fundamental skill that one should focus on when learning how to mix, or more specifically learning and ultimately understanding the art and importance of Eq. It’s quite literally Learning, and training ones self to not only listen to or hear the mix, it can be just as important and beneficial to the overall finished product, if one can eventually feel it.
