The Columbia-class strategic nuclear submarine (English: Columbia class SSBN) is the fifth-generation ballistic missile submarine of the United States, used to replace the Ohio-class strategic nuclear submarine.
The Columbia-class strategic nuclear submarine will be the largest submarine ever built by the U.S. Navy, with a length of 171 meters, a width of 13 meters, and a submersible displacement of 20,810 tons. It is estimated that the total cost is about 125 billion US dollars, and the cost of a single boat is about 12.4 billion to 13 billion US dollars, including about 4.8 billion US dollars of research and development expenses.
The development of the Columbia-class strategic nuclear submarine is progressing smoothly. In January 2017, it passed the "Milestone B" key node of the US equipment procurement, that is, the official approval of construction, and then entered the stage of detailed design and signing of the first batch of construction contracts. It is planned to build 12 ships. The first boat is scheduled to start construction in 2021, be launched in 2028, commissioned and begin operational duty in 2031, and completed in 2039.
