The tiles on the leading edge of the wing they can't be repaired or replaced that easily when the shuttle is in orbit it can only be done on the ground they're not like the black or white tiles where they can be replaced nasa engineers themselves have said this

Look it was the question of precious lifes of seven people, wheather the damage could be repaired or not , They might had to rescue them anyhow. Wheather Russian SL4 soyuz has to be sent to do so, in this case even Columbia could had been taken to dock with ISS but they couldn't be simply left to reentered and get roasted poor astronauts. But mission control was behaving like nothing happened as piece of foam struck with left wing . They could had stay in orbit longer then planned 15 days by resupply the oxigen and ration by Russian progress .
