Hi, Dr. Bulliet. I wonder about the reason why thirty-three days was the usual time period in which Rome said to the states it was defending itself against, that they would have that interval to think it over, or else war would ensue. First I thought it might have to do with geography, that it took a day and a half to go or come, and it the month had thirty-one days, that would be thirty-three, but what about months under thirty-one days in number? Then, I realized the number thirty-three is that Christological number, how old he was when he died. Or maybe the number was optimized in some way by some logic, or maybe all of these reasons, or none of them. Thank you and Columbia for sharing your interesting lecture.

The ritual of rerum repetitio predates the life of Christ by centuries. The number 3 was considered to be a sacred number to the ancient Romans and multiples of the number 3 were considered even more sacred.

The Cold War was not a myth as the lecturer claims. It was a real period of rivalry between two powerful nations and their various allies. Whether the negative perceptions that each nation had of the other were correct is less important than the fact that they had them and behaved accordingly.

While the concept of “the West” may be a modern construct, there is no debating that the Portugal, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and England collectively played a huge role on the world stage from 1500 on.

Given the communist aggression in Korea in 1950 it was very plausible to expect AND prepare for more of the same. The lecturer is benefiting from hindsight when he speaks so dismissively. Indeed, it could be argued that the willingness of the US and it’s allies to prepare for Russian aggression dissuaded them from such a step.

There is no debate about communist expansion in the post-WW2 period. Korea and Greece are two examples. Once the USSR and Red China recognized and began supporting the Vietminh that struggle became another front in the war.
