Astonished at a Christian , an Anglican speak so passionately as Mr Ryrie . I don’t know why . I’m impressed by his abilities to immediately engage an audience and the coherency of his argument .

I have never seen a video by a proclaimed theist that demolishes scripture in such a perfect way. And the beauty of this, is that the speaker demolishes scripture using mostly other Christian denominations, a beautiful "civil" war. Overall the video is a gem in favour of atheism (...or at least that nobody should take scripture seriously as "word of God")

Ayo where's the "after the lecture" bit of the lecture. This man is a gem.

For all of us who think that The Columbia Union Conference might be part of Columbia University: it's not. This is a Seventh Day Adventist "section" in Columbia Maryland.

It was a good lecture right until the point where he gives us his own opinion on how we know Scripture is true. Disappointing.

He may be a historian but he's also a Christian, after all. I think it's best that he lays his cards on the table, like an honest man.

After these two lectures I'm shocked that by his own defense for Sola Scriptura that it doesn't make him Catholic just by the obvious confusion. But he explains Sola Scriptura super accurate.. .. And Pluralism and tolerance is the key. Yet somehow appeal to the main frame of Church's standards of truths. The conversation will have you thinking. .. I'm surprised he's not Catholic after hearing this from his own presentation.

"the atheist who uses his god-given ability to argument to argue that there is no god and therefore no such thing as reason" really, that old canard? there is no non-religious reason to assume that intelligence has to be god-given (or can be god-given, for that matter). theists just like to believe things to be dependent on gods. i'm honestly suprised he would utter such silliness as if he takes it seriously. i found Mr Ryrie's historical lectures deeply fascinating. oh well.

There is such a thing as the major philosophical problem of consciousness. We do not know from where it arises. I am not saying that this proves that religion is true, but it is the only one that is provided an adequate explanation so far. We should be open to whatever possibilities may come. I am Catholic, but I am open to a mechanical explanation for the existence of consciousness and intelligence. If God can create human beings through evolution, as the past several popes have accepted, I'm not above us knowing the methods by which God made intelligence.

Please keep in mind that this lecture is directed to an explicitly religious audience - not to us internet viewers. In most of his other lectures, he is speaking purely as a historian at secular lecture events. In this video, he is speaking as a historian and as a man of faith at a religious event. He is not trying to provide a rock solid rational argument. He is stating an utterance of Christian faith. One that every person in the room would agree to.

Excellent review of the historical arguments. It sounds like his own religious views are influenced by Buddhism. Maybe he should give a talk on his modem Christianity is shaped by modern experience, including interacting with other faiths after it's become socially unacceptable to denigrate them.

1:11:38 ff = why Protestantism is better than Catholicism
@EyeLean5280 Жыл бұрын
After listening to many of his talks and reading his books, I'm convinced he doesn't see Protestantism as better than Catholicism (nor vice versa). He seems to understand that he prefers his faith due to his circumstances and disposition, neither of which have bearing on objective truth. I think he really sees each Christian sect as a result of historical processes, which are better to understand than to judge.

@@EyeLean5280 Ok. You are right that every position is a result of historical contingencies. But some theological results are better than others, I would argue.

It is, and its god, who can be uni-, bi-, or trinitarian, and resides in a celestial realm with angels, archangels, and all its company with the communion of saints and the everlastingly living, is the main fictional character in his own story, like Ellery Queen.
