We had a student die in our 12th grade year. She was given her graduation posthumously. I think that they officially registered her as graduating. Reach out to Isaiah's family and have them check the school records. If it isn't recorded in the school records, I bet they could easily get a petition to award him and each of the other victims their graduation posthumously and have it officially recorded in the school records. Many military honors are awarded posthumously. I know that it might not sound like a big deal and it doesn't bring the loved one back but it can sometimes help with closure. It would change the wording from "Isaiah was to be the first from his family to ever graduate" to "Isaiah WAS the first from his family to graduate." It sounds simple but sometimes those tiny things are the last piece of the puzzle to help someone heal. I drank heavily (about a fifth of whiskey a day) for 25 years. I worked through everything that I could think of to figure out why i couldn't stop. One day a few words from a friend put the last piece of the puzzle together for me. I forgave myself for something that I didn't realize was bothering me. That was about 8 years ago and I have never craved a drop of alcohol since. Just that one little thing changed my life and I didn't even realize it was bothering me. This is none of my business. I just thought I'd put in my 2 cents anyway.

Everyone who was murdered that day is an obviously unwarranted and tragic story, but Kyle and Isaiah are the two that bother me the most. I have a special needs child, who like Kyle, would not have known what to do but be so scared nonetheless. That’s when my eyes broke. It’s becoming so tiresome and so exhausting to see these things becoming more prevalent, while we, as a society become more numb, almost expectant, and nothing changes. We demand better, we scream for change...and nothing changes. Then another. And another. And another...I don’t know at which point we allowed murder to become normalized, when we allowed the people we elect to be our voice to shrug their shoulders because everyone agrees that we need change, but no one can agree on what that change is. So it continues to be nothing. We owe one another better. They buried Isaiah in his cap and gown, with his diploma proudly displayed, his parents preparing to watch him walk across that stage just days later, the first in his family. It just doesn’t make sense that instead of using what the world lost that day to exact change in their names, it has instead become part of our culture.

My senior year of high school, I was performing in this huge feast/play/musical/comedy we put on before the holidays each year. The sandy hook shooting happened the day we were preparing to put on our first show. I was up on a cherry picker hanging a banner when a girl a class below me walks in sobbing uncontrollably. The seniors kind of had the run of everything so I came down to make sure everything was okay and she told me what happened and we all just gathered around, and hugged because what happened was so horrific. Next day we put on a performance for our classmates during school hours and as we held a moment of silence for the victims, this absolutely scumbag interrupted the silence by shouting out the name of this little gang he was a part of, then laughed. It was awful.

He came to my middle school, we had some kids make shooting threats and bomb threats, he came and he shared his and his sisters story, it moved me so much that I did exactly what he asked. It touched me so much I ended up talking to my school counselor about these things and how I could help. He had a seminar and our school was able to invite two of the students I was able to go and hear more about it. I will never forget the message that kindness goes a far longer way. Thank you for sharing. It touched my heart and so many more.❤️

@@blackflag5148 Jesus loves you! “Two hours before the shooting, on April 20, 1999, Rachel drew a picture in her diary. It was of her eyes shedding 13 tears that trickled down to a rose and turned to blood drops. Thirteen people were killed on campus that day. The rose was connected to a Columbine plant, with a Bible verse underneath it that says, “Greater love has no man than this, that a man would lay his life down for his friends.”

We had an assembly in 8th grade, my first full year in public school, about Rachel, the other victims and survivors of the shooting. We were each given a copy of "My Ethics, My Codes of Life" and I kept it pinned to my wall above my bed to read often for YEARS. I still have it and just came across it the other day as I was going through my bins of memorabilia and my heart broke a bit, but I smiled because I remembered where the outpouring of my kindness and compassion stemmed from now, almost 20 years later. 💖
