I have loved this show since I was a little girl, I’m currently 51. I didn’t actually appreciate or understand much then, there was just something about the show that fascinated me and now I truly appreciate how perfect it is. I don’t watch the later episodes because it lost the magic for me. I can watch Columbo anytime any place.

I'm the same way, the 1970s Columbo's are so re-Watchable, I adore them but the later 1989~90s Columbo's just really lost something, much as I love Peter Falk, it just doesn't feel quite right outside of the 1970s.

I'm 45 and got into Columbo about 7 years ago. I don't care for the later episodes either. I think my favorite episodes would be Any Old Port In A Storm and Catch Me If You Can. Lady In Waiting and the one Dick Van Dyke plays in are also good ones. I grew up watching the Dick Van Dyke show and was shocked to see him as a villain. I think he did an excellent job.

I enjoy watching these Columbo ratings so much, but I had to comment on the Johnny Cash episode. I forgot how much I loved that episode & Cash's performance.

Thank you! That was probably the episode I had looked forward to the most before starting the season, just based on Johnny Cash being the guest star, and I ended up enjoying it in a different way than I anticipated.

I love The Rockford Files. I think it's the greatest private detective series of all time, and James Garner is one of the most charming actors ever.

Any Old Port in a Storm is a favorite of mine, Donald Pleasence just sells the character so well. I agree with all your logic-holes in the plot but there's something sympathetic about the Killer whose whole life is his vineyard and wine collection and here his jerk brother tries to ruin it all for some quick cash. Pleasence really manages to evoke a vulnerability, like he's not a bad guy even though he committed a murder, it was to him really self defense. I also like the angle of his assistant that loves him even though he seems incapable of affection and acts cool and stern to her, love can be like that sometimes, not logical but real. The fact that Columbo treats him so kindly at the end is very satisfying, you get the sense that he may not spend forever in prison and that the assistant will be there for him.

90 minutes is the perfect time for Columbo. It allows for more of the cat-and-mouse. An hour makes it Murder, She Wrote which is great but lacks something that Columbo had.

Donald Pleasence in Any Port in a Storm may of been my favorite acting performance of the whole series. Nevertheless, ranking the episodes and characters is so incredibly difficult. Thank you for your excellent and fair Columbo commentary. Enjoyed every one of your overviews ! Additionally, your take on Val Avery really made my day! I truly appreciated him in all his Columbo appearances… further his part in Friend In Deed was perfect!

Thank you for this excellent video. I very much enjoyed your review and analysis of each Season Three episode, as well as your sense of humor throughout. I would rearrange the rankings a little bit, but in general I agree with your placements. I love Jack Cassidy in all three of his "Columbo" appearances, including "Publish or Perish." He never disappoints! John Chandler also is great in that episode. "Candidate for Crime" is one of my favorite "Columbo" episodes. I would place it ahead of "Swan Song" and perhaps even ahead of "Publish or Perish." I always enjoy Jackie Cooper. In my opinion, he was a very good actor. Also, seeing him always brings back fond childhood memories. When I was a kid, our family watched the TV sitcom "The People's Choice" which starred Jackie Cooper. This was in the mid to late 1950s. He of course was an adult by that time, but I also knew him from the old "Our Gang" (aka "Little Rascals") comedy shorts which were shown regularly on TV in the 1950s. He was a member of the cast from the late 1920s to the early 1930s, when he was a young boy. I also knew him from his role as Jim Hawkins in the movie "Treasure Island" (1934), which also was shown on television from time to time when I was a kid. I also would place "Double Exposure" ahead of "Swan Song." I just love Robert Culp in this episode (and in the other Robert Culp episodes too!). I think Johnny Cash does a great job in "Swan Song," but I just don't like his episode quite as much. Regarding Richard Kiley -- I have always liked him a lot too. He is well known to US audiences (or at least to "older" folks like me. 😄 His career began in the early 1950s, and he died in 1999). He was a well respected stage, film, and television actor, both as a leading man and character actor. He received two Tony awards for Best Actor in a Musical (including creating the role of Don Quixote in "Man of La Mancha" on Broadway), and also won several Emmy and Golden Globe awards. He is in a number of movies that I like, including a supporting role in "Blackboard Jungle" (1955). You also mentioned Guy Williams and "Zorro." I loved that show and Guy Williams!! He was wonderful as Don Diego/El Zorro. I watched "Zorro" regularly when it was on TV in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Another fond memory from those days of yore.

Thanks very much! And thanks for letting me know about Richard Kiley. I've gone through his filmography, and despite having watched so many older movies, I don't believe I've come across him prior to this. Maybe in some other TV show guest appearance, but I'm not sure. I've been wanting to track down "Blackboard Jungle" for a while, so I'll be sure to look for him once I watch it.

@@HildebrandProductions I have seen "Blackboard Jungle" several times but not recently. I enjoyed it, although it is a bit heavy-handed and over the top in places, in my opinion anyway. Also, at least some of the high schools students are played by actors in their mid to late twenties (including Vic Morrow and Sidney Poitier) and do not look like teenagers. Richard Kiley plays one of the teachers. Glenn Ford is the star.

OK, before I can even finish the video, I have to say Lovely but Lethal is one of the most confounding Columbo's ever, simply because it had Vincent freaking Price(!) and a youthful Martin Sheen and neither of them are the killer??? How could they pass that up? Ugh... what might have been! A total re-write would have been worth it. It reminds that Leslie Nielsen was in 2 Columbo's but never as a killer, what a great killer he would have been!

Any Port in a Storm... I don't believe Columbo had any children. He just uses whatever narrative that can cause the suspect to relate to him. I think that in another episode, although I can't remember which one, Columbo says that he and his wife were not blessed with children. Columbo is not above making up family members and/or family circumstances to advance his case. Love the reviews!

Swan Song had me rolling my eyes at how he thought he could pull it off. Being thrown clear of a plane crash. How is that possible? A person gets thrown out of the car upon impact. The way that plane crashed there was no way he would've survived in the way he did😅

Have to disagree, the man in black was the best episode and dub exposure was 2nd. POP was ok but not the best or even 2nd best IMO. I DO agree with you that the worst, easily, was Mind over Mayhem. Dreadful! Thanx 4 sharon your review, love em. Keep em comin!
