The secret weapon to this episode's success is that each of the main characters has an "arc." Susan starts off as a childish, sad and even pitiful figure. We feel sorry for her and her situation. Her brother comes across as callous, cold and ruthless. Their mother is at first commanding and seems to be in firm control of the family. As the episode continues, however, we see each character change. Susan becomes the cold hearted and ruthless one. Her mother becomes the weak one and we feel sorry for HER. Her brother it turns out, was right about Susan and right to keep her on a short leash. Peter, the attorney, seems to be a gold digger and only in it for Susan's money. However, the ultimate irony is that he was in fact a GOOD man. He was truly in love with Susan (with her money or without her money). In fact, he was quite prepared to leave the company. Had Susan's brother not misjudged Peter's character, he might still be alive.

Being in the landscaping business myself I can only say I respect the guys that were cutting grass and forming those beautiful box hedges 50 or even 100 or more years ago. Those guys 50 years ago had some rudimentary power tools and equipment but the gardeners that were maintaining perfect lawns and intricate hedges during the Victorian era, were exclusively operating hand tools. If the Queen herself was satisfied, I have no reason to doubt they did a much better job than I do today..

There were never any "murder charges", there was an inquest. This property has likely been taken over by Peacock, who has promptly outsourced the production to exploitable workers who aren't expected to watch the episodes and aren't old enough or in the right country to have seen them on their own.

Oh, but he gets her! This episode had a cool Columbo line near the end. The woman says, "What do you expect to prove by this bit of nonsense?" Columbo said, "Oh, I don't wanna prove anything, ma'am. I came to arrest ya."

@@ogzombiebreakfast She set it up so her brother wouldn't be able to get in the front door and would have to use her French doors to get in, and she could claim she thought he was a burglar. But he had a spare key to the front door, entered the house and then came into her bedroom. She shot him anyway, and then lied about him coming in through the French door. A court hearing found the death to be accidental, but Columbo persisted. Her boyfriend drove up at the time of the shooting and he remembered hearing the alarm going off _after_ the gunshots. Columbo suspected her all along, because her brother's newspaper was found in the foyer as soon as police got there.

why would his superiors allow him to continue to work on a case that was already decided to be an accident at the inquest? You'd think they would have him work on another case after that because the case was officially over

Had the same question....but I think a commenter answered it above , that this "trial" was just to see if there was any reason to GO TO trial-so I guess that can be reversed (?)
@DKarkarov3 жыл бұрын
@@irar4665 Yeah, the inquest is just an evaluation of evidence, not a trial. She had not been officially charged with anything, so it would have been reasonable to keep investigating if the police had more doubts.

This family is probably one of my most disliked just overall. The brother was controlling, the mother was dismissive and the sister was a cold blooded murderer. Honestly felt bad for the boyfriend, he seemed like a decent guy.

Silly, how every suspect in this series incriminates themselves when all they have to do is to invoke the 5th amendment and shut up. Of course if they did, there wouldn't be a series. Loved Columbo when I was a kid, but no way Columbo could get away with bullying suspects like he does on TV. Still, the series was great fun.

I think this has something to do with our human nature. Somehow we all feel the need to explain ourselves even though when we not necessarily have to. Especially when we are innocent of the accussed. If one is truly innocent than why would one remain sillent? After all I expect that one who is truly innocent would want to express it for all to hear. And those who are in fact guilty would want to express it in order to pretend that they are innocent which they are not.Thus we need evidence to distinguish the guilty ones from the innocent ones and sift the lies from the truth.
@CrystalRose11112 жыл бұрын
@@FritsGerlich07 Because that’s not how the law works. Even if you’re innocent, you may feel like explaining yourself is okay but you can accidentally incriminate yourself by saying the “wrong things”. USA law is tricky and weird

. Columbo did a lot of location shoots. They didn't have to make big fancy house sets, they just made use of the huge market for rental houses in LA. You've seen many houses in movies and TV shows multiple times, because some of those places work hard to sell themselves as rental sets for TV. Know how you can tell he's shooting at a rental location while he's looking at the car? Look at all the grass growing up in the crevices between the concrete slabs of the driveway. No one with any self respect in a house that fancy would allow grass to grow up there, making their driveway look that ugly. It's too easy to keep grass from growing there. A little table salt sprinkled in the crevices, and a little water to soak it into the soil. Kills grass and weeds cheap, and does a half decent job of keeping it from sprouting for a couple months. Weed killer too, but salt is safer all around.
