You do realize that Columbo is a fictitious character, that the show is scripted, and that any and all circumstances are contrived. There isn't any detective work involved. The "detective" is an actor, repeating memorized lines written by someone else.

With a name like Robert Culp he has to be Culp(able) of something in Columbo episodes he appears in. Why didn't he get rid of the calibration converter from the lamp when the police had finished their investigation his place? Suppose he did try to get rid of it, the screenwriters would have Columbo appear suddenly behind him, just like he did when Abagail Mitchel in "Try And Catch Me", tried to dispose of her nephew Edmund's car keys in the ocean.

If you're thinking of committing homicide in Los Angeles and after killing someone, if Lieutenant Colombo is the investigating officer, be quicker for everyone if you confessed straight off. I think this is one of the few weaker endings of the Columbo series. Columbos idea is a nice spin, but it is completely unrealistic that the very smart murderer has not gotten rid of the converter by then. He had enough time since the murder and the converter at the crime scene is the only proof against him. This would have been the first thing to do after the police left the building.
@garryiglesias4074
@garryiglesias4074 Жыл бұрын
"smart murderer" ? How did you get that ?? At least if he was a "professional murderer" (aka a hitman), the guy is victim of "Dunning Kruger" (and also the "Nobel Disease") -> he knows NOTHING about murder and investigation, he's a TOTAL noob. But because he's "smart" in his domain of work, he thinks that he's smart "everywhere", total BS... As Columbo said (at least) once: "That's my specialty you know: homicides"... And it's almost all Columbo scenarios: the pro here is Columbo, the expert is Columbo, and the villains are just egotic, presumptuous, self-called "geniuses", who are just total noobs, no experience, and think they can win.

Aside from the obvious improbability of the criminal failing to get rid of the converter in such a long time and the subliminal message technique conveniently working to such perfection after just one attempt, one other funny thing that just struck me is, Columbo could've easily looked into the lamp and found the converter while he was taking the pictures. 😂

I've been watching a load of these Colombo shorts in the last few days and they are great, but one thing stands out in SO many. Why do the murderers keep the gun (or in this case, the barrel converter)? They try to create an elaborate scenario to place it on someone else and frame them, but all you need to do is throw it away! All you have to do is ensure there isn't ENOUGH evidence to press charges, not make it certain that you are innocent.

Columbo could never stake out a suspect. His car was too unique looking. I can't believe that guy pulled out of that driveway and didn't notice him sitting there. The problem with a caliber converter, such as shown in the clip, is not the barrel, it's the magazine. Yes, you can convert a 45 ACP to fire a .22 round. But you can only get off ONE shot. A second bullet will not be automatically chambered because the cartridges won't fit the magazine. I haven't seen the rest of this episode (or at least not since it was originally on the air), so I don't know if the victim was shot more than once. But if he was killed by a single bullet, this is possible. On second thought, it might NOT be possible after all. A 45 weapon ignites the primer in the cartridge when the firing pin strikes it in the center. The 22 cartridge, however, is a rimfire type bullet. The firing pin of a 22 weapon strikes the cartridge on the edge, like the name says. I'm not certain you can fire a 22 with a 45 even WITH a caliber converter. Almost any other cartridge will work, but not a 22. If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to enlighten me.

I wonder if this technique of "Supplementar Cut" really works in reality. I wish I had the possibility to try and see myself! Subconscious vision is faster and more sensitive than seeing through the eyes. 😊

To my understanding, I've heard there's no definitive proof this actually works in reality. Still makes for a great "gotcha" moment.

Subliminal cuts. They were a theory at the time this episode was made, that you could insert one frame of a picture of popcorn here and there in a film and get people at the theatre to get hungry for popcorn and thereby sell more popcorn, but subliminal cuts never really worked.

2:08 - Is that not William Shatner doing the narration? To me it sounds exactly like him but I can't find any indication of it anywhere.

But what about solving the murder of that poor operator? Sort of an open end this episode.

I was going to bet that it was a pipe-gun. They're hilariously easy to make and conceal, even out of plastic.

Yes. Except they are sometimes prone to blowing up, or at least spraying gunshot residue all over the area when fired through. A caliber converter is machined out of quality steel to fit tightly in the barrel, so you don't really have to worry about the shot failing or leaving a lot of evidence

Now I know this technique has been used in advertising in the distant past.....I wonder if anybody uses it today?

And then a guy who looks just like Robert Culp appears in another episode as the murderer and Columbo doesn't notice the resemblance😅.
