And all of those were originally cultivated, bred over time, by indigenous peoples across many generations. From your name tag I'll assume you are Irish. I'm Irish as well. The only reason why the Irish Potato blight caused a famine is because the wealth of Irelands other productive crops were being taken out of country and sold by the British purely for their own profit. They allowed the famine to happen and many thought more dead Irish was a good thing. Would you frame the economic benifits to the British Empire- off all that stolen food as a good thing? I would hope not least ye need to change your name. smaoinigh ar ár sinsir agus ar a gcás. We can recognize that indigenous peoples were not in Utopian kumbaya. We also shouldn't down play the very real crimes Christopher Columbus committed. Even omitting his direct actions.. In his wake came the death of millions. Canned corn, hot sauce, fries with a cigarette & chocolate milkshake really just doesn't cut the moral weight of that away. So I'll honor indigenous people's day because it honors the memory of what all those people went through rather than the man who brought it to their doorstep.

@@ShaferHart The conquistadors were insanely lucky. The whole story about the fall of the Aztec is just way too long and it gets skipped into a simplified version but if they didn't get a translator who hated them (cause she was enslaved and they kinda freed her), got a bunch of different groups to somewhat ally with them to defeat a common enemy and so many near total fails where they should have all died it would have ended quite differently. In the end, it's all because of people thirst for power or money making them do crazy shit and huge risks. There are probably some others who tried shit but never got remembered because they didn't achieve anything. Gunpowder is great, but it's not like they had fast firing guns, you would get destroyed if the enemy could close in before you could reload if they outnumbered you by a huge margin.

It’s very well known that a conquest and a colonisation aren’t peaceful campaigns. Horrors did took place in south and central America by the Spanish and the Portuguese. But not even close to the mass murder, massacres and genocide that is told. That was part of a strategic campaign from the British empire at the time, to politically and commercially damage the vast Spanish empire’s economic and military hegemony at that period. It’s known as the Black Legend or Leyenda Negra by Spanish people. No doubt that ,any were killed by the conquistadors. But you must ask something to yourself before making any statements. Here is the question How it’s possible that the original inhabitants of the Spanish colonies still alive today, but the ones who were living at the British colonies had disappeared or almost disappeared after the British occupation? If the Spanish conquistadors committed genocide and mass murder, what’s the point of building 34 cities and 12 universities between 1610 and 1671? roads, ports, hospitals and mixing themselves with locals? It’s so easy to open the mouth and speak big without knowing nothing but biased stories. The Spanish were there not only for the wealth of the American continent. The Spanish were sent by the catholic crown of Spain and the Vatican to spread Christian religion. We can see people all along the South American continent descendant of Mayas, Incas, the Aztecas, or the Olmecas with surnames like their ancestors before and after the colonial period. Please remember to check your sources and have a look at the British Empire that has left no one alive in most of their former colonies.

Chris, gonna have to give you a Thumbs Down on this one. Methinks you made up your mind about a meme you wanted to pontificate about beforehand- and then went about trying to come up with cute-ish things and ways to say things about it in the process. As someone who has actually read the 1619 Project in full- it took me over a month of morning teas, since I usually found something every morning I then wanted to spend time on looking up history et al on my iPad- I think you actually mischaracterized what it was about (not to mention the fact it was a compendium by many authors on many subjects). Plus, on the subject that got us here: I, for one, make the national plea: that that October Monday be BOTH: Columbus Day AND Indigenous People’s Day. And I do so with a straight face, because there are DAMN GOOD REASONS to do so: COLUMBUS DAY should remain because, when Chris first stepped on that beach- uniting- for the first time, ever, that ended up staying PERMANENT- the two halves of humanity on the planet Earth- they henceforward remained integrated (come hell or high water!!!! Sometimes both!) It was when he took that step on that beach at that moment that humanity on Earth took its biggest, ever, turn. AND as someone who retired from NASA after 46 years because I believe that space exploration was the extension of what folks like Columbus did, it ALSO needs to be remembered every year as EXPLORERS DAY/EXPLORATION DAY, and what those words mean for humanity - including, going forward. And THAT’S why it should be remembered. SIMULTANEOUSLY: We SHOULD also keep it as INDIGENOUS PEOPLES day; because there is NO SINGLE BETTER EXAMPLE of the law of unintended consequences in many ways- including ‘lessons learned’ about what can happen WHEN EXPLORING- when grossly different paradigms come into sudden, direct contact- technologically, culturally, you name it. After all, there are reasons Star Trek was famous for introducing the whole idea of the PRIME DIRECTIVE- an idea, not only to protect other, ‘less advanced’ cultures from us- but to protect US from other contacts as well when necessary. It’s a big universe, and while we want to laud exploration, we need to somehow- someway, need to find the right way, to ladle in the proper amounts of the ingredients of Lessons Learned and Caution in the process. - Dave Huntsman

It's not just horrible acts, but the circumstances. The word utopia is supposed to mean a paradise society. Problem is that original draft involved slaves. Columbus brought slaves, but that was the norm and expected at the time. A good example of what Columbus did is the story of Tahiti. Written in a book of History's Biggest Mistakes. Where the first voyage was tame and basic. But over time each new voyage by different ships gave new problems. Strict and violent punishments horrified the natives. Christian missionaries introduced them to sin and made them feel guilt and shame. Hilariously reflecting the Adam and Eve where the previously sexually open and bare natives now were western clothes. New diseases were introduced. And this once paradise, as described by a painter who came to see it. Had been corrupted and destroyed by foreign involvement. Everything visitors had praised and told had been ruined. The leader of that first voyage would later write his regrets over their discovery that doomed this once peaceful and free island to become barely a shell of it's former natural beauty and openness. Saying they should never have set foot there in the first place. There were awful groups who did terrible things in America. But the colonies were arguably worse and spread the terror across the continent beyond repair. But I hate giving everything names or designating everything. Left, right, liberal, radical it doesn't matter. You can't black and white everything into a damn message. You don't talk about your own budget and home economy by an ideology. Capitalism didn't exist in the 15th century, neither did communism, socialism or your-ism. Just monarchy, empire and state within states such as the Hanseatic League and East India Company. Prussia was once called a military that had a country. Stop labelling everything left woke, alt right socialite or gay liberal neo oligarchy Taoism. It means as much as "Yes we can" CAN WHAT!
