It was early into your river treasure adventures and you were excited just to find a swim bait back then. Glad you went viral and could make a living off doing what you love.

Thanks for stopping through my hometown! Columbus has some great spots. Im seeing you went by the AFLAC tower off Macon Road which you remarked I s a strange spot for such a large building. The story goes that John Amos the founder of American Family Life Insurance wanted to live in the Overlook area which was a wealthy neighborhood in that part of town but the snooty residents shunned him. He said one day when I become rich I’m going to look down on all those rich people who looked down on me. He built the only skyscraper in Columbus and put his house on the parking deck which casts a shadow on the Overlook neighborhood. So he literally looked down on them!

As a recent transplant to Columbus by way of Ft. Benning, I chose to stay after retiring because its a pretty nice place. I enjoy mountain biking and there's an awesome trail system here. We have 3 natural surface trail areas, Flat Rock Park MTB trails, Ft. Benning MTB trail, and Standing Boy Trails. Standing Boy Trails have the best professionally designed and built mountain biking trails, so much fun to ride! You highlighted the riverwalk which takes you all the way to Ft. Benning, but there's also the Fall Line Trace going east across town for bike access to much of the city.

Don’t move here unless you plan to reside in the northernmost part, in Midland, otherwise expect to hear about shootings, robberies, car break-ins and other negative events. You are safer in NYC right now. At least you have 35,000 cops on the payroll. In Columbus, police may or may not respond to your call. Criminals know this fact and they are brazen.

K.D. the Cow was named after the old K.innet D.airy factory that used to be off the first exit from i-85. When the factory shut down the City's Best Buy took it over and kept K.D. as the City's landmark on their property. Once Best Buy moved to the north side of town the City wanted to keep K.D. and moved her to the Riverwalk for visitors and tourists to see! :)

The building you liked but was boarded up was called the Ralston Towers. It was for low income seniors and for the disabled. Unfortunately, a out of town company ran it into the ground. Not much upkeep, deplorable conditions for humans, air conditioning spotty. Ppl died in that building and no one would know for days because lack of management inside the building that actually gave a crap about the residents. Anyhow, long story short, out of town owners fined and fined and fined until it's put up for sale. New owners finally, so cross your fingers, rehabilitation of the building goes well. Love your videos and wish you and your wife safe travels.

Born and raised in Columbus, Ga. It’s a big, small town. The city is a hidden gem . …With The revision of uptown along with the Whitewater rafting, downtown has seen a huge resurgence. There are many beautiful areas in my old hometown. Katy the cow was a rep for Kinnett Dairy, not the “ bovine industry”. I love my hometown, the good and the bad and the ugly. Although I moved a couple of years ago, I spent 55 years there. There is no perfect place to live but Columbus has many, many good places to see and visit ( along with many bad places !). AFLAC and TSYS are major employers as well as those you mentioned. We have a university as well as A major ARMY base. The river walk is quite beautiful and the zip line is one of the best around! We are close to both Atlanta and the Gulf of Mexico. Since Cols boarders Alabama, many people who live in Phenix City, Ala work in Columbus( and Phenix City is on Eastern Time because of this).. Those Veri Best donuts are the best you will find ! There is also a wonderful Opera House called Springer Opera House that is over 100 years old.. and is known to be haunted. There are so many landmarks that you missed! Next time, I’ll give you a better list of places for you to see if you ever return. Thank you for visiting my hometown!

Born and raised in Fountain City, your video was very informative, just a shame you couldn't make it to more of the city. The Botanical Gardens are nice, alot of beautiful parks, the entirety of the historic side has more folklore and history than you could imagine. The Springer Opera House puts on great productions of everything from Girls and Dolls to Evil Dead the Musical. Holidays are a big deal here too. There's stuff to do everywhere. If you have money and you can get past the eerie aura, it's a fun place to be. If you want peace and quiet, though, good luck finding it.

I’ve worked in Columbus for 12 years. I live outside of Opelika, AL. I started downtown at the beautifully historic First Presbyterian Church which I see you found! I love the charm and character the downtown area has to offer. The building you saw boarded up was The Ralston, a once beautiful hotel that became low income/subsidized housing in its second life. It closed in 2021 after much controversy about the living conditions. Unfortunately, as it is in a lot of downtown areas, you don’t have to go far to be in a rough area. Crime has increased dramatically on the south/southeastern part of town.

Some of y'all negative comments are for the birds. There is crime going on everywhere and alot of places have bad sides of town. I don't understand how some of you all in the comments trying so hard to downplay the area. And shame on you if you live here or quote on quote use to. Downtown isn't the ONLY area being worked on for the better. They working through Bibbs, Midtown and other areas of Columbus, GA. People passing through from living in bigger cities/fast pace don't appreciate the area when they live here. They the main ones I hear complain about what to do and where to go. But, it funny when you don't do your research and make the best of your living situation. Columbus is more a retirement area since we do have a military base. You can find a nice decent home and settled down. It's not like a major city but it's growing. And if you are a real native and have seen the development throughout the years then you see the overall picture of it being a pretty good area. I also noticed that people wanna talk about how crime has went up but not realizing the generation in the area is different and we've taken on alot of people outside of just being MILITARY. The attitudes around here are ridiculous. Not everyone here are SOUTHERNERS 👊😂🤣.

I have lived in Columbus Georgia all my life. Early on when I was a teenager in the 70s and early 80s, nobody dare go downtown Columbus. It was real Rundown and full of a bunch of sketchy people, Winos, drug addicts, thieves, it was a real rough place. Businesses started closing down until there was nothing left but empty weathered shells. The late 80s and throughout the 90s they took Downtown Columbus and created a new Uptown Columbus. From the 90s up until the present 2023 all of the old buildings and the old mills have been transformed into condos and apartments, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. It's pretty amazing if you've ever seen Downtown Columbus before and after! In some places you can still smell the 1800's. Most of the new businesses have kept all the materials and structures as original as possible. The old Greyhound bus station has been converted into a very popular barbecue restaurant called COUNTRIES BBQ. They also have an antique bus attached for extra seating. Totally the best barbecue in Columbus Georgia with three locations. The Riverwalk is amazing also! You can walk over a bridge and be in Alabama, the Riverwalk also continues on the Alabama side. There is so much nostalgia to see on the Riverwalk. Columbus has grown so much and hasn't stopped! I must correct you on Katie the cow. She used to be located on Manchester Expressway, she was the mascot for Kinnet Dairies. I remember her from when I was a small child. She was an iconic landmark for us that were raised in Columbus. I hated when they moved her.

I was born at Ft. Benning in 1937 and grew up in Columbus. Downtown Columbus didn't begin to deteriorate until the late seventies when the malls took business away from the downtown shopping area. I was employed by Kirven's a locally owned dept. store on Broadway. My heart was broken when they had to close their doors. I moved away from Columbus in 1970 and have no family there now, but I am delighted to see its restoration. My senior prom was held at the Ralston Hotel in 1956 and it was so luxurious. So sad that it is now boarded up. I hope there may be plans to restore it in the future. Thank you for this look at my "home town"!

I lived in Columbus in 1970 thru 73. My dad was stationed at Benning and I lived outside the entrance and by Columbus High. It has changed so much. There was a very poor area I walked thru going to school and it was a little scary. The homes were sometimes shacks and people would watch you going by. Race relations were touchy and you had to be careful where you hung around. I could see Alabama across the river right by my home. I stayed out of it though because of snakes. Thanks for the update and views.

That boarded up building was a cotton mill back in the day, I grew up in Phenix City, AL. If I remember correctly there was a cotton mill on each side as you crossed the river. There is also an old movie called " the Phenix City Story". It was a pretty bad place back then. I don't remember the year, but I am 76 yrs old now I started school in Columbus, but we moved to Phenix City when I was in 2nd grade. Before we moved we lived across the street from the courthouse. I believe it was 2nd Ave. Thanks for this video, I haven't been back there in many years. God bless.

My main attraction to columbus was the weather; in the past 40 years I can only remember Columbus being affected by 2 storms but everyone made it through unscaved... Both storms seemed to be hurricanes when I was a child. Other than that, the weather is always great be it cold or warm... even the "stormy" days, which are very few, are calm and relaxing.

My moms side of the family lives in Columbus ga while we live more near Atlanta, compared to Atlanta Columbus just gives my kind of late 1900's feels! In the part where my great grandma lived at, they still had old fire stations and signs.. while parts of Columbus is beautiful, some parts are just kind of abandoned, my great grandma didn't live like the city parts of Columbus she lived in the same little house probably built years and years ago because of how tiny and property is, not even in a neighborhood. Everything there was kind of old fashioned where she lived. Now a couple miles down the road where my aunt lived, it was a great big neighborhood with nice grass and houses. Columbus does have its luxuries! Although we haven't been there ever since my great grandma passed like 3-4 years ago, towards her last months to a year, she lived in a nursing home. Defiantly built a while ago too, i was creeped out how small and dainty the bathrooms were with a small little 'emergency' button in both of the stalls. Overall, one day I do want to go back and revisit but the car ride omg! We stay at my aunts house when we go because there aren't really any hotels, thats another reason we cant really go back because she recently moved and its a smaller house with probably only 2 bedrooms. We normally only stay 1-2 days with a 3-4 hour cramped car ride. We also have a dog now and stuff and a bunny so its quite hard to go especially considering my great grandma passed and my mom doesn't really want to go back. But great memories 😄😄

I was born in LaGrange in '52 and a few months later the family moved to Columbus where we lived for the next 12 years. It was interesting in your video to see the areas that I vaguely remembered--but I certainly recall the donut shop! Some Saturdays we used to get a dozen from there and then drive over to Well's Dairies and get the best milkshakes. Back then the textile mills along the river were in full operation and sometimes there would be lots of white cotton particles floating in the air that were released from the mills. My sister and I would always shout "It's snowing, it's snowing"! Besides the cotton pieces, the mills would blow loud horns at 3pm to signal a shift change--you could hear these horns a mile away. Also, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce (I assume) in the late 50's/early60's had a billboard installed which read--"THERE IS NO ATLANTA, SHOP DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS"! We all had a good laugh at that one!
