(CBJ fan) My guess is that this really had little to do with Jiricek's numbers or giving up on him based on performance at his age. They probably saw or heard things they didn't like or concerned them that we don't know the full story on. They maybe didn't want another situation where they try to keep someone long term, sign him, then he asks for a trade. It just seemed like the trust wasn't there. They likely wanted to move him now while the value was still there. As a fan it does hurt to lose that pick after a bad year. then again, the team is trending much better and the blue line can be built in other ways. The cap space is there.

feeling rather frustrated at how Columbus fumbled Jiricek's development. Vincent's comments regarding Jiricek wanting to get more ice time especially seemed to sour the relationship significantly. I just wonder how much damage was done from that last year of Kekalainen/Vincent management, it seemed truly disastrous from an outsider's perspective.
@LieuFang3 күн бұрын
Considering Jiricek is the only prospect who forced his way out, this says a lot more about Jiricek. According to Aaron Portzline, Jiricek has been complaining to the club about ice time and demanding to be in the NHL since the Brad Larsen years. And there's been reports that Vogelhuber had issues with him in Cleveland in trying to get him to take assignments seriously (Jiricek not coming in for shift changes, not adhering to the defensive system, cherry picking, etc.) Vincent's comments were uncalled for, and clearly he wasn't liked by other players in Columbus, it just seems that those comments were in response to years of Jiricek's continued uncoachability and complaining, which at that point had turned public, with Jiricek complaining to the media until his agent told him to stop. By many accounts, it sounds as if instead of taking a real shot with new management and coaching, Jiricek doubled down. Wasn't in shape for training camp, wasn't focused on preseason, because his spot was "supposed to be guaranteed." The newest report is that when the team went to send him down to the AHL with Mateychuk, he said if he didn't get to stay in the NHL, he'd demand a trade, forcing them to keep him up and barely play him because he's just not NHL caliber right now.

The big mistake was for Jiricek to have gone to the AHL after being drafted rather than to the CHL. His skating just isn't up to NHL standards and as a draft pick, it was fixable but now he thinks he should be playing in the NHL and offensively perhaps he is capable of that, but there's times that he can get beaten so easily because he just isn't mobile enough. If he's going to be in Iowa trying to fix his skating, then it's the same situation as being stuck in Cleveland. There's a major difference in salary between the AHL and NHL and perhaps that's the issue. But if he's worried about that and doesn't make the NHL fast enough with the Wild, then he could be rather discontent there.

The chances of a late-1st playing 25+ NHL games is ~35%, 2nd rounder is 25%, 3rd rounder is 15% and a 4th rounder is 10%... The Jackets will be fortunate to get one legitimate full-time starter out of that haul, and with their drafting / developing history, I don't see it happening.
@drow042 күн бұрын
You are 💯 correct. The draft capital the wild gave up is fine. The wild also traded 2 picks they got from other teams from last years trade deadline moves. The nhl draft is a crapshoot after the top 15 to 20 picks and even those picks aren't a guarantee. The trade is worth the risk for the Wild!

Jiricek's skating hasn't gotten any better and can result in him getting beat very badly. Rumors is he's complaining about ice time, isn't listening to coaches in Cleveland and doesn't want to be in the AHL. It may be even worse for him in Cleveland now that Mataychuk is doing so well and may be ahead of him to get a call-up.

Jiricek's skating is the issue, along with his attitude.

On its face, Columbus took in a haul for an unproven prospect. Minnesota rolled the dice that this kid will be a future top-4 D-man for years to come. Time will only tell.

Good for Jiricek. Jackets' history of developing talents has been awful.
@FHL-Devils4 күн бұрын
Dubios (3), and now Jiricek(6), plus Klesla (4), Zherdev (4), LeClaire (8), Picard (8), Brule (6), Filatov (6), Murray (2)........... it's past the point where the Jackets should just trade their picks (especially Top10) for actual assets. The franchise is hopeless at drafting / developing. Even their 'amazing steal' Chinakov (21) is barely over 0.40 points-per-game in his career... although that is legitimately great for a Jackets pick.
@TheHenryDuong4 күн бұрын
Hmmm that's quite a list too . Damn that's brutal lol.
@martinslezak96643 күн бұрын
On top of that, this is across 3 different management groups. But at the same time, the current roster is full of drafted and developed players. Plenty of guys in later rounds that still keep playing elsewhere.
@jdm78113 күн бұрын
I wouldnt add Klesla by far CBJ’s worst development of a prospect, completely wasted an offensive defensemen Klesa deserves way more credit for reinventing his game to play in NHL
@FHL-Devils3 күн бұрын
@@jdm7811 - I get Klesla had a reasonably long-term NHL career (albeit, injury riddled), but I put him in Eric Johnson / Thomas Hickey territory... Good NHLer, but a 'waste' of a Top5 pick for what was returned from what should be a franchise-altering draft position.

@Jerryboss244 күн бұрын
I don’t like the trade. I personally think Jiricek would benefit from a different team than Minnesota. A team like San Jose or Anaheim would be perfect for him. I just don’t think he’ll get much minutes and reach his potential on a team that has Brodin, Faber, Middleton, Spuregon and not to mention Zeev Buium. However, I personally think Coumbus got the best they could for a guy who wasn’t playing for them anymore therefore I think Columbus wins this trade
@deeh878904 күн бұрын
Wild have always been really good at developing these defenseman, until they show me otherwise I have no reason to believe he won't be a stud in the top 4 in a year or 2.
@austinmorton80084 күн бұрын
Brodin and Spuregon always injured so he will get mins
@kingtchenka6284 күн бұрын
Minnesota's right handed D breakdown... Faber is the top pairing guy. Right now second pairing is Spurgeon who is going to be a 38 year old UFA in 2.5 years. He's likely to be third pairing 2 seasons from now, and 3rd pairing for sure if he extends beyond 2027. The third pairing guy is Bogosian who has 1.5 years on his deal and could be the press box guy if Jiricek outplays him. There's basically room for Jiricek to be second pairing right now if he earns it, making Spurgeon third pair and Bogosian press box. He could also earn third pair over Bogosian. If not, put him in AHL first pair and PP and PK and lots of ice time.
@FHL-Devils4 күн бұрын
I disagree. If he's not even NHL caliber for a bottom-feeder like the Jackets, clearly he needs some development. Putting him in a franchise with a superb track record of developing D-Men, with great mentorship, and a peer-group he can grow with... I think it's an ideal opportunity, and definitely make-or-break on his career - if he can't develop in that system, his North American career is likely over.

It is an interesting trade. So both teams trade defenceman that they believe will not make their top 6. Minnesota must believe there is more potential in Jiricek because they trade a first, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks for a the round pick. This is a pick it would be great to remember and evaluate in a couple years time.

The wild were/are in need of larger defenders. And with both Spurgon and Brodin struggling with on and off injury issues it makes sense that they’d be interested in a big ,high potential, 7th D-man for this season and the future.

"as long as he's willing..." sounds like he was NOT willing to put in the work in AHL and couldn't naturally crack the lineup in Columbus. Sadly may be wasted talent regardless of whether hes in MIN or CBJ. Glad CBJ cut their losses though if he's not going to respect the timeline he needs to succeed long term.

Bill Guerin GREATER than Kyle "I don't do evaluations and blow a**" Dubas. Basically a late 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd for a 6th overall. 3rds rarely work out, that's nothing. They traded down by trading a 5th for a 4th, no big deal. If the player works out and reaches his potential or is a longterm consistent mid, it's still a win for the Wild. At least CBJ didn't draft Shane Wright at 4th or Cutter at 5th. Whatever. We'll see.
