We sang this song at a holiday camp, called SOS Camps, in the Boland (an area that is a little inland from Cape Town, South Africa) in the very early 80's. It stuck with me through the years and I taught it to my daugther when she was little. We would sing it on Daddy and daughter adventure days out. She is is in her teens now and a day out entails shopping, so not much singing. She delighted me this evening when she asked me about the song. I sang it to her and then thought to find it on KZbin. This is the only version that is similar to the one I learnt and taught her. Lovely memories all round, from camping and singing in the 80's to teaching and sharing the song with my daughter. Thank you. You made my sould smile this evening.

Yes, from 1964, and believe produced by the great Jerry Kennedy..(over 30 years guitarist,producer,& A&R man for Mercury Records, Nashville..This is a great, fun tune, and wonder if is where it began? Do not know much history of the song itself..And no information of "Janice" & the Little People..But hope you enjoyed ! I love to archive all great old lost music...

Here's an excerpt from my pancocojams post mentioned above: "It's my theory that the 1940 Latin Jazz song "El Cumbanchero" is the primary source of the R&B songs Cu Ma La Be Stay (Chubby Checker - 1964), "Oh, No! Not the Beast Day!" (Marsha Hunt- 1973), and the numerous playground rhyme which are known as "Flea Fly Flow" ("Cumala Vista"). My theory is based on the similarity of the word "Cumbanchero" and the title of those other songs & rhymes, as well as the similarity between the first two lines of "El Cumbanchero" and lines in those other composition. Also, my theory is based to a lesser extent, to "El Cumbanchero"'s tune, and the tune of those other compositions. A rendition of "El Cumbanchero" was performed by Cuban American musician Desi Arnez in 1946. It's likely that the popularity of Desi Arnez as the producer & star of the mega-hit American television show "I Love Lucy" which first aired in 1951, helped familiarize people in the United States with the "El Cumbanchero" song"...

When I read your comment, my first thought was that the female singing group that you might have remembered was The Dixie Cups. But their 1964 R&B-ish record was "Iko Iko", an old Mardi Gras Indian song, and not "Coma La Vista". But Chubby Checker - of "Twist" fame- recorded a R&B song with the title "Cu Ma La Be Stay" in 1964 and Marsha Hunt recorded a R&B song entitled "Oh, No! Not the Beast Day!" in 1973.
