As someone descended from those very same Comanche, I can tell you that violence and the taking of land from tribes by the various other tribes of North America was a very common practice, long before the first Spaniard set foot on the continent. Our people were not peaceful & stoic, as led to believe.

Your people were just that, people. All cultures have weakness and strengths, things to admire and things to loath. Glad that more and more people are realsing this and rejecting the woke cult BS that promotes a culture of perpetual victimhood.

Modern day people are so soft and disconnected from reality. You have to realize that these ancient people were feral humans. Nothing special or different. They lived in the wilderness with no access to any other knowledge than what they were taught and lived from birth. Modern humans are all weak and pathetic. Not one current day American would be able to live a week in these people's lives. Do not judge them harshly or judge them at all. They were what we all used to be.

I never learned about a white captive in both this tribes in this position and status .But l trust four fifth of the narrative and like your style and content. Victorio was the most handsome Apache ever and died in the early seventies in Mexico. The earlier spaniards paid the Comanche to root out the Apache, the two tribes hated each other from the ground till the times in reservation..sometimes until today I heard..😂 Every German over 40 years know that already . I read " Geronimo's Story of His Life" about 12 years ago. Here's a description of the author and book: The editor, Oklahoma school superintendent Stephen Melvil Barrett, first met Geronimo in the summer of 1904, and felt that the 76 year old Bedonkohe Apache leader and medicine man from New Mexico and Arizona, a prisoner of war for 20 years far from his home, who had never told his side of history before, should finally do so. President Theodore Roosevelt granted Barrett's request to interview Geronimo, and this is the result, without Barrett's clarifications or intrusions - "write what I have spoken," as Geronimo said. Topics covered include his early life, the origin of the Apaches, their tribal structure, raids in Mexico, and interactions with the American military.

I am Apache . The Comanches had a much larger tribe before the onset of smallpox. With sheer overwhelming numbers and expertise in mobile tactics using horses, they had too much advantage on the Plains. So, the much smaller bands of Apaches were not a match in Texas. The exceptions were the Kiowa-Apaches who were their allies and mixed with Kiowa. So, the Apaches took to mountain strongholds like the Guadalupe Range or Sierra Madres to survive. They could hold their own in the rugged terrain with excellent ambush tactics that negated horse travel speed. But by 1880 remnants of Comanches had actually combined with Chief Victorio since most Comanches had been killed by smallpox and Quanah Parker had left the warpath.

@manuelsteele2651 - two dates are given for the comanche/kiowa peace (1790 and 1805). around that time, the comanche and kiowa apache would also have been at peace since the kiowa apache were part of the kiowa tribe. so, the kiowa/kiowa apache and comanche would have the same allies (wichita, etc.) and the same enemies (osage, apache, etc.). with all that said, i do not recall ever reading anything about the kiowa apaches relations with the apache proper (lipan, mescalero, jicarilla, etc.)? i would assume the relations would have been warlike mostly (until the 1870's).

Another well done H.O.K.C., I've already read 'Nine Years among the Indians', but I appreciated the 'colour' added by your selected Pictures and well paced narrative. Interesting, the Apache and Comanche, agreed to unit in combating the threat of 'White' invasion. Not the first People to embrace the concept of 'the Enemy of my Enemy is my friend'. Also, sadly, not the first time this concept came much too late. I suppose, the overriding concept, no matter who invades and why, remains: 'Vae Victis'.

Humans are worse the animals in how brutal they are. The same thing is happening in the world today.

Comanche nearly exterminated the apache. Leaving the apache to live like prehistoric cavemen in the hills and mountains. Thats what happens when youre from a losing bloodlime.

I read the book recently. Grisly and a great first person account. Hermann is buried now in Oklahoma not far from me here in Texas. I’m a be out an hour away from Quanah Texas. He never really could adjust back to white man ways and was a legal member of the Comanche. Great story and highly recommended.

Peter - well said by someone descended from those folks that treated indigenous folks in Australia so wonderfully. Do you even know the history of your people and that of those folks from whom you took land?

Poor Herman. He had to spend nine years living among those animals. He should have become a U.S. Cavalry scout and got his revenge on them all later.
