COMBAT !.......Remains the Best. I was 12 growing up in NYC in 1963 and couldn’t wait until Tuesday night when the next new Combat episode was on at 8pm. That was over 55 years ago and I still marvel at how well written and produced every episode was with terrific Guest Stars. Those Were The Wonderful Simple Days....no cells, no video, no pagers......My late Mom just told me : “Make sure you’re home before the street lights go on”.

Watching this in 2021. Never got to see this in 63. Boy Scout Troop meetings while show was on. Saw first time Fall 2020. Now Spring 2021 watching again. Wonderful show, so well done by writers, directors and actors. Each one like a short movie. Junk on tv today cannot compare.

@@bob_btw6751 , Hope that you and your family are in good health. Glad that got to see a portion of “Combat”, the best WW II TV series EVER !! Keep on watching as each episode is, as you said are : “their own short movies”. The core cast of SGT. Saunders, LT. Hanley, Little John, Kirby and Cage were all excellent in their roles in Every Episode. Each episode had “Guest Stars” who became famous later on ; Jack Lord, James Coburn, Jack Carter and so many more. As a kid of the 50’s, I was so thrilled when Combat ! went to color, however some of my favorite episodes were in B & W. Let me know your thoughts as you continue to watch. So many great episodes for you to look forward to watching. (Sgt. Saunders and his machine gun was my favorite character) Enjoy !

Yup, also one of my faves, although I was watching it mostly in reruns. And yes, we had a big patch of woods and swamps out behind our house, that is where I spent my Saturdays and nearly every day of school vacations.

Me too. I always used to pretend I was on patrol with the guys. When the shooting started, I used to duck behind the various pieces of furniture and shoot back at the Germans. Sometimes I pretended I was the new guy and get wounded or die, lol. And yeah, you're right, much, much simpler days

My mother had this way to word stuff like that .we were very lucky to have her long as we did.good night and GOD BLESS all of us ...

Same here. I had the biggest gun collection in my small town. Everyone came to my house to play war. I'd lay all my weapons out on the yard and everyone got to pick their gun. Of course, I always got 1st pick lol. We used our BB guns sometimes. But our rule was -it had to be empty. We would run all over town playing. Now a days, someone would call out the SWAT team on us.

💫*French actress Micheline Presle did an outstanding performance in this episode. She died in February of 2024 at the age of 101, only months short of her 102 birthday of August 22. The German officer was played by Swedish actor Alf Kjellin, who died almost 40 years ago, at the age of 68.*

You have to love these old series.they were well written with a great cast. You got to see a decent drama and pretty good action. And everything didn't have to visceral. Some of the things were left to the imagination. They did not try as in this show the glorification of war. Lessons were subtile. Never attempting to teach you how to live your life, but leaving to the person's honor a sense of respect. Not everyone had a happy ending. They did not have to be tied into some long corporate advertising that today seems as long as the show. You were not told you must have this or that.they were great stories. I wish TV shows today would take a lesson from these. I think , and this is only my opinion, we could go back to this type of work. People today could benefit from it.

This is one of the best stories William Bast wrote for COMBAT, and that Laslo Benedek directed. It has the quality of a top-class full-length movie. The story, pacing, locations, and flow of the plot is as good as any top-line film. It continues to amaze me that they could put out such excellent programming on television in the 60s.

This writer did a really good job at the end. It just kills me to see her walking by vic morrow without saying anything. I have always wanted to ask the writer and the actress what that meaning of not saying anything back to Vic Morrow ment because it hits really hard. I guess because I have had some many relationships like that were you just don't say nothing at the end and just walk by each other and maybe that is why It hits home with me at the ending part.

I guess she was trapped between two lifestyles and worlds. She said earlier it’s not my war she is just live with it. And than I guess thinking about that kid putting himself in danger all the time. Micheline Presle looks so much like Inger Stevens it's scary . One hell of an episode showing just how great Vic Morrow was as an actor, he helped make the show better than the writers could have hoped for. Sad story for her character ,shame she seemed not to realize what Nazi Germany was doing to not just the Jewish peoples of Europe but what they would have done to all the world had they won. Her sadness was lost on evil.

I'm looking for a first season Combat! episode that ends with the squad walking happily up a road after Shecky Greene's character jokes about something or gets teased. I only remember seeing the ending, and would love to see it all. Any idea which one it might be? Thanks in advance.

I’m sure some French women fell in love with their German occupiers, we’re their stories ever told? Wonder if the writer of this episode was inspired by this.
