I spent 21 years in the infantry. Father was an NCO and had 7 brothers in the war with him... I grew up loving this series, never knew how much I learned from its stories. Leadership is an art, I know they are actors, but dam good ones. Thanks men... I learned the trade from all of you.

I always admired the sarge when I was a kid-he seemed like the pinnacle of courage, with a touch of devil may care and battle fatigue thrown in. But no that I’m oh so much older, I watch these old episodes and catch myself admiring his hair (and hair stylist)!! Thank you for the fantastic work, Vic!!!

One of the best episodes of the series ! Bridgehead , the Impostor , and many episodes of the 5th season are right-up-there . My favorite is "Hill is for Heroes" , a two-part showing (S4Ep. 25 & 26).

Good old James Best , when I was younger I would see him all over the stations the first couple of times was on " The Twilight Zone " . Then on a comedy show or a cop show or sometimes a western " Wagon Train , Bonanza , Gunsmoke , Rawhide " well you get the idea and until the " Dukes of Hazzard " , I never knew his name . RIP James

Je suis français et j'adore cette série. A chaque épisode on retrouve un comédien célèbre en Guest star. Et j'ai le sentiment que Schpilberg s'en est inspiré pour créer la série " Band of Brothers". Combat est très moderne pour l'époque.

This is the most amazing episode I've seen: A tactical, a strategic, and a personal storyline interweaved, and played out well. And I've seen a lot of Combat! since I wuz a kid, an' I'm sure I just saw this episode for the first time. Real footage of Panzer III's--as opposed to M-48's-- playing the role, a realistic intelligence / strategic reconnaissance scenario, and the story of the coward faced with exigency of war, and the logical 3-D conception of the tactical battle are exceptional. The departure from the normal writer and director team is no doubt the cause. A weak point is the squad's lack of questioning the malingering nature of the new arrival, .
@memphoonthemississippi642
@memphoonthemississippi642 9 жыл бұрын
hallmobility But early III's, maybe some II's - really should be IV's, Panthers and Tigers, especially in an SS Panzer division at this point. But still much better than the early episodes using 1939 footage of I's and II's in Poland, French junk from 1940, and even some North Africa footage.So much great stuff here - can't guess why their historical footage was so out of place (e.g., Stukas on the Western Front in mid-1944?).

I just assumed Saunders helmet cover was different so the viewers could identify him easier. They all have individual "signatures" Docs helmet the Kirbinators B.A.R, Cajes beret on his shoulder or head, little John is huge, l think it's important in the wooded action scenes and when there is a lot going on.

The best thing about this episode, is that it helps solve something that puzzled me even watching as a young kid, i was always wondered why Saunders wore that camo helmet cover ,, Marine issue not Army Issue ,, perhaps his brother sent it to him , so there would be a connection to them even they are separated a half a world away from each other, just a possibility but it finally makes more sense

Chetin Basaran Your wrong completely, View any Marine combat footage of the period ,Pacific theater you will see this helmet cover in abundance , and another thing they would not make helmet covers out of silk ,way too expensive, they made them out of readily available materials and inexpensive , I see you have not done any research in this matter and only want to impress people with your ignorance.

A dislocated knee, elbow, or shoulder is painful on the same level as childbirth or kidney stones. When returning a joint to the socket, one does not just "pop it back in," the surrounding muscles are in spasm and a long pull is necessary to relax the muscles and allow the socket to be reset.

Kirby appeared later on a couple of episodes of Hawaii five-o as a navy captain and I think even on Magnum PI.....An interesting character that Kirby...at times you didnt like him,but for sure he was a damn good soldier when you needed one. I think they modeled Kirby after your average GI and a lot of WW2 vets could identify with his character 19 years or so later when this episode aired. Vets would have been about 38 years old and I can hear them now telling their own personal stories of a guy they remember back in the war kinda like the one portrayed in this episode.

How many times do we have to watch these cowards finally grow a tiny jellyfish spine ? Then at a moment right in a firefight. They always are standing up blasting away only to be shot down. Roflmao I can't stand these cowardly sons of hitches. Saunders should fill out reports highlighting their cowardice without hesitation. I wonder sometimes just how many real soldiers got killed because of these douche bag cowards ?Most likely a lot. Nobody except psychopaths wanted to be out there. It's all about you controlling fear and not letting the fear control you. Fear is not knowing the unknown. What's going to happen regardless of what you think. 90% of the time it is never what you thought. So, an enormous amount of anguish for nothing. Everyone has to die sometime. Cowards are selfish stupid bastards only thinking about themselves and nothing or no one matters except them. So, yes they deserve to be linned up and shot. There's nothing more dangerous than a coward in the middle of a firefight. I can't stand a coward. This show has a lot of episodes that involve cowards on the front.

The US did not invade Okinawa until April 1, 1945 by which time the fighting in France was long over. The one major battle in the Pacific during the summer of 1944 that comes to mind is the battle for Saipan fought in June and July of that year, Not sure if there is any jungle on Saipan.

Some dismissed my earlier fact checking on this episode. Thing is there were many people alive then who lived this. My uncle was on Okinawa and knew quite well that there was no jungle there and that the US Army was no longer fighting in France when they landed on Okinawa. That was an important thing to get right.

saulpaulus Taken from www.mca-marines.org/leatherneck/okinawa-final-battle-ww-ii-full-articleapril-1985 "The Japanese, following Ushijima's orders, had retrieved their dead and faded into the plush northern jungle to fight in small guerrilla bands." Notice the word "jungle". Actually appears twice in the article. This show lasted 5 years...longer than our involvement in WW2, not to mention even only up to now they've been through the same village at least 8 times I believe. It's a TV show for cryin' out loud.

saulpaulus: Saul, it was just a T.V. show with 30+ episodes to write and make each year. I will find you continuity and other mistakes in literally everything. So what? It was dramatic entertainment, and great at what it purported to be. So chill and appreciate it for what it was, and remember that many "true histories" lie far more than this show did.

I said I heard the Marines were looking for a few good men and he agreed. I said they were looking because the Navy already had them. He said FU squid and punched on the shoulder. I said FU too Gunny and he laughed. He was my Dads age and fought in WW2, Korea and Nam. A Marine's Marine. I respected him and would have followed where ever he lead.
