Trying to retain a bit of Humanity during war is important. You have to live with yourself after you return home. One small act of kindness, with all the attached risks, can make the difference between holding your head high, or hanging your head in shame for the rest of your life. Children can be extremely lethal because they are two things; easily brainwashed, AND they don't really understand death's permanence...

That's a good point! A lot of our guys who came home from Vietnam were guilt-ridden because of what they had done, meaning killing children as young as five or six years old because the enemy used them and either laced them with explosives or gave them grenades to toss at you or they blew themselves up and killed a lot of American troops. Even though they did what they had to do, it still took its toll on our guys and many of them either went beserk or committed suicide because of it.

Randy109: You forgot the teens or even younger kids who tossed grenades at our folks in Nam. Dealing with an enemy who hides behind kids or women rather than fighting out in the open does tend to numb you towards being human at times like that. It's far easier to deal with a uniformed foe like the Main force NVA.
@kenpalmer19657 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the definite truth. When you know who your enemy is as we did in WWII(The Japanese and the Germans), it wasn't as frustrating. Now the Germans did pull some deception stunts on us during the Battle Of the Bulge because they looked like us except for the black troops. They used commandos disguised as American GIs or MPs. But other than that, we knew who we were fighting and what they looked like. Yes our soldiers and marines did a lot of things which were barbaric at times during the Vietnam War because, as mentioned, we didn't know who the enemy was in a lot of cases except for the uniformed N.V.A. soldiers. Many of the Viet Cong guerrillas wore the so-called "black pajamas." But then again a lot of the other wore plain civilian clothes. They would participate in sudden hit-and-run raids against our forces and then disappear into the jungle and even sometimes into a village full of families including women and children. When that happens to you enough, you will tend to become angry and possibly do things to civilians that you normally wouldn't do because you feel they are striking at you and then running and hiding behind those civilians. It's kind of like a kid hitting you and then hiding behind the teacher in the classroom, knowing you can't do anything without consequences. I am in no way excusing or condoning what they did, but we have to understand what our guys went through during that war. And yes the communist forces in Vietnam also used children and even attractive teenage girls to approach the guys and then either toss grenades at them or even blow themselves up and take many of our troops with them. That was a very different and difficult war for us to fight in because it was unconventional with no fixed battle fronts and uncertainty of who the enemy was. It was a definite first for us. And the insurgents in Iraq and in Afghanistan are employing the same or very similar methods against us today!

Condoning what they done? What the FUCK did they do? They did NOTHING wrong!! If the civilians didn't want to suffer they should have all raised their arms and joined our Veterans. I am SICK AND FUCKING tired of Liberals or even Veterans making excuses for what happened in Vietnam as if any Veteran can control the horrible events of war. Innocents die in war, that has ALWAYS been reality, the USA isn't unique in world history as far as that is concerned. But we ARE unique in the fact that OUR Veterans 99.99999% have mercy as we see in this television show, which is based on reality, yes, it is. I know for a certainty that even Germans at times had mercy, not usually, but there are stories by US Veterans that they had been given mercy by a German soldier. It happens. But with the USA it is the norm to have mercy, not the exception. And it PISSES ME THE FUCK OFF when everyone speaks about Vietnam as if it was somehow a mark against our military. They fought bravely, they fought an EVIL enemy that as you said, hid behind women and children. When those American rounds hit unintended victims like women and children, you know who was responsible for it? No, not the US Veteran, the one who put those women in children in harms way were responsible, those GOD DAMNED communist PIGS. Fuck them all. And if you dont' like what I say, FUCK you as well. You aren't a Veteran, I have known many, they are proud of their service, they don't apologize because they earned respect and they know it. Fuck the world, USA always, Only and forever, fuck the Chinese, Russians, English, French etc. Go USA, Go ISrael, the rest of the world is 3rd world.

Combat! S05E06 "A Child's Game!" Six Stars - [********] This Episode centers on a Farm House with young German Soldiers who refuse to Surrender...These young Soldiers are cut off from their lines...15 and 16 year old boys are not Soldiers. There are Kids said by "little John". This Episode Shocked me. A lot of War Films have never covered the Last hours of Berlin in 1945 when American and British Troops discovered 14-16 year old German boys behind Artillery Guns protecting Berlin and Hitler's Bunker. Hitler's last Defense to save the Third Reich! Little John had the Best idea - He tells Saunders "I'm not going to kill a bunch of Kids!" However, Back in Ancient times Kids, Mothers, Brothers and Sisters fought for the Survival of a Culture or Civilization. The only Human choice is either to Live, Fight, or Die! These young German Soldiers are faced with that choice. Some great acting by Vic Morrow, Doc, and Little John. Also, great writing makes this Episode work. The Directing is on the Mark! "Men should Fight Men and not Boys!" Glenn E. Smith Jr. Vietnam Veteran, Tuesday, 10/20/2015, 2:05PM >>>>>>>

Hey, I'm back (a month and 1/2 later)! Watching this episode again... The German spoken in Combat is usually well pronounced but "simple" phrases. If they dont' speak too fast I can understand pretty well. I took 2 years of College German in the late 70's and can't hardly speak at all, but Ich Verstehen quite a bit... Peace, Randy

10:03 At that time such a good English from a commen German Highschoolboy ist a little bit unbelievable. In those days they usually learned French before English. So it had been a bit more simple and broken if it was real.

Hmm, when someone is shooting at u to kill u it doesn't matter if they are 90 or 13, THEY are soldier and u have to treat them as such. War is hell and that's why we should never have one again. But knowing humans lust for war and conquering others, it may be inevitable

Sadly, if those German teens were "Afghan or Iraqi teens" in today's war the modern US Army would kill them without even offering an opportunity for them to surrender. I don't mean to disparage our boys that are serving, but only to point out how much the modern Army has lost its humanity towards people that are of a different Race or Religion. We would have no such personal interchange between today's Muslims and US Soldiers. It's truly sad that we've slipped so far morally...
@kenpalmer19657 жыл бұрын
True, but looked what the experience of the Vietnam War did to us in regards to becoming insensitive. When you were fighting an enemy which disguised themselves among you and then launch an attack on you from within your own base or outpost, that will definitely change the way you think or feel about people. I will agree with you in that it is sad and tragic, but you have to look at the other side or aspect when it comes to the safety and security of our boys. In that war(Vietnam) and in Iraq and Afghanistan, you simply don't know who the enemy is and it becomes damn frustrating and will quickly become paranoid of those around you who are not American. It's a sad but true fact of war,especially in a country in which there is a civil war going and when the inhabitants of both sides look the same. Just ask any Vietnam veteran who fought there during that war along with anyone who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan today.
