There isn't much depth to this video. I'm really just listing all of the units under the command of Lithuania's Land Forces (Sausumos pajėgos). But for those who don't know anything about the Lithuanian military, it's a decent introduction!

In Lithuania name 'army' is associated with the red army primarily. So to distance ourselves from occupier we decided to call it 'kariuomenė'. Much more Lithuanian (much older and more archaic as well) name compared to Armija, since Soldier - Karys, kariuomenė is a bunch of fellas. Sausumos pajėgos is the land forces of military exclusively and does not include Air or Naval troops (Kariuomenė does not include navy, but for me personally it includes air and ground(most likely I am wrong)). Been enjoying your videos for quite some time. The quality is improving with each video and I am really happy you chose to live here, cheers!

sometimes officially "Ginkluotosios Pajėgos" (Armed Forces) is also used.

It's not really important, but Lithuania isn't big enough to be considered an army

@@Semtino The word "army" does not have size requirement as far as I'm aware. Burkina Faso has an "army" for example. I think it all comes down to tradition.

Army vs armed forces comes down to doctrine. Army is both defensive and offensive while armed forces is defensive in nature. And is not designed to project military power outside Lithiuanias borders.

Regarding the voluteers and reservists. These are two different things and we should not confuse them. Conscripts (NPPKT, Nuolatinė privalomoji pradinė karo tarnyba, compulsory military service) after finishing their 9-month conscription service become reservists, are listed as active reserve (aktyvasis rezervas) and within the next 10 years, every 5 years or so (so around twice in 10 years), are called up to do a 2-3-week-long training/refresher. After 10 years they're listed as prepared reserve (parengtasis rezervas) until they're 60 years old. Volunteers (Krašto apsaugos savanorių pajėgos, KASP) are paid "weekend soldiers", serving 1-2 weekends per month, every month. Professional soldiers (PKT, profesinė karo tarnyba, professional military service) serve 40 hours/week, full-time. Volunteers are civilians during the week and serve as soldiers every other weekend. Reservists - twice every 5 years. For a comparison, riflemen (šauliai) (Lithuanian Riflemen's Union (Lietuvos šaulių sąjunga) serve a similar number of days per year as volunteers, but are unpaid and have to buy their own uniform and non-lethal equipment. So, you could say, riflemen are the real volunteers, but in Lithuania we had the professionals and riflemen, so we needed to create something in between. In Lithuania, if you want to be a soldier as part of the Lithuanian national defence forces, but you want to keep your full-time civilian job, you can join KASP volunteers (paid) or combat riflemen (unpaid). If you don't want to be a soldier, but you still want to be part of the defence forces, you can join non-combat riflemen.

With little correction - being riflemens union member gives you right to aquire and keep at home even "mini-volcano", if you have enough physical and financial strenght.

I appreciate the recent series of videos that are related to military service. Seems like after full scale Russian invasion as opposed to hybrid one in 2014 Lithiuanian military is taking major steps to boost its defense capability. I served in Duke Butigeidis Dragoon battalion stationed in Klaipeda back in 2016. And until recently I served in US Army's legendary 10th Mountain division.

@@Semtino The agreement is already signed and no political force opposes it. It isn't getting "cancelled". Especially considering that General Rupšys himself brought that up to Americans while visiting US as an example of Lithuania strengthening its defence.
@Semtino

@@eruno_we'll see when the contract is going to be ready to be signed. Otherwise, there can be a lot of changes since elections are just around the corner, and there's definitely uncertainty, Rupšys is also going to resign in 4 months with the same or newly elected president. There's plenty of critique coming from reserve commanders and soldiers which some politicians publickly picking that up and seeding doubts about this. So this is very much a political decision so having cautious "optimism" is overall recommended.

The change to the term land forces happens for the same reason why the war ministry is called defense ministry nowadays. It's also the same reason nobody starts wars nowadays but liberations and other euphemisms. You don't want to be perceived as the agressor as this could have more severe repercussions. Happens all over the world.

That's our third brigade that's only "on paper" right now, because it's not fully formed. But if we start a general conscription, form a tank batallion with upcoming Leopards and finish forming our division, the third brigade will become a normal brigade (a division consists of 3-4 brigades).

7:28 speaking of the Iron Wolf Brigade, although its fairly controversial, Algirdas Batallion based in Rukla is generally known currently as the "hardest" in both senses of the word, known by many conscripts as possibly the worst place to be placed since there's plenty of stories about how strict they are and how much they tend to excel.

I read Belarus has recently relocated its 19th mechanized brigade towards Oshmiany just 12km away from Lithuanian border for some kind of exercises. OTOH, Vilnius is 20km away from that border which is slightly more than the distance between Kyiv and Hostomel. There are no major obstacles (like Irpin river) which can be used to stop the attacker. I am pretty sure Lithuanian High Command know his already. So I'm wondering how they are preparing to defend the capital in the event of an invasion.

Not to mention Lithuanian military is increasing conscription and modernising military equipment. Lithuania is bordered by NATO members such as Poland and by sea Sweden, it will never be alone.

@@eruno_ with Sweden's and Finland's entry, we no longer have to worry about the suwalki problem as Gotland is both a supply hub and a force projection hub that would easily negate any conventional forces coming from kaliningrad. What needs more focus now is the eastern border which is where the focus will undoubtedly shift to now, considering there are Belarussians just over a few dozen kilometers from Vilnius.
