You were still vulnerable to overhead attacks firing down at you and grenades getting thrown in. But anything firing up or straight at you you were generally safe up to 50 cal. Even the slot the gun slides into had a over lapping ballistic shield so to keep visibility but not allow shots to slip in around the gun and get the gunner. Alot of times it even had space to hold some extra ammo with the gun. So you didn't have to retrieve it from inside the vehicle.
@MPdude2372 жыл бұрын
The BMP-1 technical is a real thing. First things first, the 73mm gun is not a tank gun, it is a essentially a sealed breach version of the SPG-9, which was a Recoilless rifle, and as such, can only fire HEAT and HE and at low velocity because of that. For comparison, the 73mm from BMP goes only 1300 FPS, the 75mm from the Sherman Tank goes 2000 FPS and most APFSDS rounds fired from tank guns like the D-10 100mm and later have a velocity of 5k FPS or more. And that the low velocity is firing relatively lightweight projectiles, not giant steel Bullets or tungsten darts, so the gun cannot sustain that much pressure. As for the BMP turret on the Technical it is real and you can look it up. It shows up all the time on r/shittytechnicals. It appears to be fairly common in the Syrian conflict. Still great content.

WWII had a bunch of armored cars (with wheels!) that carried cannons. Most were either 20mm or 45mm, but the record was 75mm (howitzer). The 20mm versions were still agile vehicles for their time, whereas the 45mm were essentially tanks and the 75mm was an improvised artillery piece. Needless to say, it wasn't good to frame, engine, transmission, and suspension... PS: I still wonder how light tanks and armored fighting vehicles were employed in WWII on a tactical level. My guess is that they were either used as infantry support, or some less than competent general used them like regular tanks risking high losses, whereas I doubt that they were often used to take advantage of breakthroughs or harass the enemy. While many tanks of the era would have been vulnerable to the sides to even a 50cal, I doubt that the vehicles made good ambush tools. Something like the Hetzer was infinitely better in that role (obsolete tank, essentially refurbished with a stronger cannon, taking advantage of its small profile compared to any other vehicle with a similar cannon).
@gotanon89582 жыл бұрын

Regarding the technical with the turret? That wasn't unrealistic. It was a real vehicle used in the Libyan civil war, where the rebels mounted darned near every weapon system you can imagine on the backs of light pickup trucks. It's a BMP turret, so it wasn't too heavy for the truck if the suspension was reinforced. Some things the game is getting wrong are having so many forward facing weapons and little to no armor. As a general rule, technical weapons were mounted to mostly face to the rear, especially when it was a crew-served weapon. That was done because they backed the trucks into firing positions. It gave the cab more protection and helped avoid the windshield being shattered, and also allowed them to pull away in a hurry when they needed to move out. Early in the war, it was true that technicals had little crew protection, but that changed swiftly. By the midpoint of the civil war, the back ends of the trucks carried as much armor as the suspension could take, and they massively customized the suspension to deal with the added weight.

I tell you what. The "Grouse," which is supposed to be a stand in for a UH60M Blackhawk, is hella inaccurate. Everything from the game model, to manning the machineguns, to how it handles, and how the inside is configured. It's entirely "inspired" but in no way is correct. The game version actually neuters you a bunch, because the gun mounts on a real Blackhawk are way more flexible. You have 160 degrees of traverse, + 30 degrees of elevation, and a full - 90 degrees of depression. Which means you can shoot straight down if you needed to. In game your field of fire is like half that. The real one is way more maneuverable. And you can cram 11 fully equipped guys in the back with all the seats in.
