In Afghanistan Norwegian OPFOR and US units often went on recon together, and during one outing they heard gunfire from a remote village up in the mountains. The US members of the group wanted to call in an airstrike, but the Norwegians told them to wait. Then the Norwegians infiltrated the village. They returned an hour later and could then tell that it was a wedding. Afghans tends to use the AK-47 instead of fireworks. Fun fact, the Norwegians was the only group that did NOT get frostbite up in the mountains. Hiking... During boot camp we have the dreaded '3mila' (30Km march along roads). We carry 11Kg + weapon on our back, and the time ot bear is 4hours30minutes. Doesn't sound that bad, really... Except that you had to be able to do normal service the next day. (This actually makes sense. A soldier who can march to the front, but not be able to serve in any capacity afterwards is of no use to an army) And if you hadn't worn in your M77 boots or paped up your feet properly, you got blisters. Really bad blisters. One guy in my troop had 2" wide blisters on both heels. Bleeding blisters. Real nasty. He absolutely REFUSED to be sent to the medics the next day. He had sweated and bled for the badge, he was not going to be stopped. I remember the time I got a PROPER rucksack. With properly adjusted hipstrap. Dang! What a difference! Hiking staves. I assume you're using those that look like ski poles? One tip for anyone new to those is DO NOT USE THE STRAPS when going downhill. If you step over the staff or on it... you pull yourself down... Also, you need to take a look at his other videos, where he tries their acceptance tests, or where he tries for unarmed fighting provess. Or US Marine training...

I think a lot of the reason the Norwegian army grinds out these crazy survival units is because during WW2 we had "gutta på skauen/The boys in the woods (closest translation)" a group of young resistance fighter who fled into the wilderness to escape capture and lived out there while doing sabotage and harassment "operations." And these guys are very admired in Norway (and rightly so in my opinion.)

I mean, during the recruit period, pretty much every specialized battalion in Norway has some sort of recreation of the operations Gutta på skaugen and other sabotage units conducted during the WWII.

They partly named the operation "Meatballs" because it's a running joke with Magnus' last name (Mitbö, but with Norwegian Ö instead of the Swedish Ö) since it's pronounciation is very similar to Meatballs in English.

Sigint and satellites will NEVER be able to tell what anyone is thinking.. For that you will need humint. someone who hears what is said, and who knows the person that said it, and can interpret their reasoning behind it.

Good point about the SF and their value in fighting a war. Especially a full war like in Ukraine. Much better to create elite forces, larger units that make a difference.

These guys aren't even considered special forces over here. They are specialized, yes, but like a big chunk of our military, they're serving their conscript service in the LRRP. Yes, we do have conscript service. Everyone between 19 and 44 are eligible to be drafted by the military in peace time, which in practice means that when graduating high school you will be tested by the military to see if you're fit for service. Not everyone will be drafted, but many will. If you're not drafted at 19, you will still be eligible to be drafted until you're 44. This also effectively means that everyone who leaves the military before the age of 44 are in the Norwegian military reserves. Also, a lot of your operational commentary is relevant from a standpoint of having enormous resources. Our military has almost unlimited resources in terms of technology, but in terms of manpower, we are very limited in size. Thus, we focus on the quality of the training instead of relying on the possibility of other personnel being able to help out.
