Yep I can see why he is as good as he is looking at this from a complete novice perspective. Lingering on past holds and difficulty can cloud your brain and make you not "be in the moment" so to speak. There is a time and place to reflect on dangerous moments of the climb, and it's best to not reflect on those when you're hundreds of feet in the air with no protection.

I think I said it on the original as well but I'll echo it here: This is the best free solo content possible. It's really eye opening to see Magnus shitting bricks on a 5.9! Most of the time solo content is discouraged because you don't really want to inspire others to do such a crazy dangerous thing, but seeing one of my climbing heroes so incredibly uncomfortable on a route he could climb in his sleep really punctuates how terrifying soloing is and emphasizes that this isn't an activity that even the best climbers in the world approach nonchalantly and neither should you. Soloing isn't a joke, it isn't a game, it's literally life or death at every moment. Thanks for doing it so that we don't have to, Magnus! And Marte, please ensure he makes you a hard promise now!! Realising the second time round the danger that is happening which I didn’t appreciate the first time as a non climber. Alex casually saying my climbing pals either have kids or have died. And then that go pro footage is just terrifying. The original video and this commentary are the two greatest videos I’ve seen Magnus do. I feel like I was there.

Is a “better video” judged on the number of views alone? This poses the question would this story of Magnus free soloing garner more attention, less attention, or just a different kind of audience if the outcome were different? Celebrities die of cancer all the time but the story of magnus overcoming his fear and the physical and mental challenge of the wall with everything at stake is a positive story i feel emotionally invested in. I felt impressed and relieved at the end of the video. Impressed clearly by Magnus climbing abilities and relieved considering how Magnus seemed to be honest with his girlfriend about how scared he was at specific moments of the climb and hope that your relationship will grow in trusting each other. The other thing is that Magnus was clearly risking more than just death, this video is a “good video” because I feel so relieved for his girlfriend. Another kinda dark question is well how good of a climber really is Magnus, what’s the riskiest most challenging thing that he could do that’s still surmountable. This specific climb feels like it was pretty close to the current surmountable limit of his mental ability Ie what he’s comfortable with and actually able to do without falling into a shear panic attack and making a mistake. Yes this was a surreal video i wasn’t sure I was going to watch. I saw the thumbnail a few months ago and only watched now holding out as long as I did for fear that by watching this video and adding to the view count I’m somehow feeding Magnus fuel to push himself to the limit. It goes without saying I caved and eventually watched the video because like mosquitoes drawn to a flame everyone likes a good story it’s just a hell of a lot nicer when it’s a happy ending.

I am a technical diver and it is amazing to see the parallels to free climbing especially the mental aspect of it. An important aspect of dive planning is Risk Assessment. The most difficult question only I can answer is: Am I mentally up to this dive? I know I have the skills but can I rescue myself if need to be? And once at depth, quickly up is not an option anymore. To Magnus, respect.

I was a diver in my younger years. I stopped after my Dad died, he was the only one that I trusted enough to go out with. That's what amazes me about this video, even with Alex's words of encouragement I would still not be convinced. I had a good friend that became a SAT diver and after he got out of the service, he learned quickly how NOT like the service the private sector was! He would find missed steps and make them do complete rechecks of everything before he would go under. He developed some really bad health issues associated to the industry, which is something that they tell you in the military to expect. He passed away 10 years ago, but he worked until his age prevented him from going on extended dives. Trust is such an important part of these types of activities. These guys seem to know each other and they're both pros. My Dad told me, nobody promised you a tomorrow. I like seeing these guys doing these things and having someone they trust to do it with.

For me, Magnus is so, so impressive in this - Honnold is well inside his comfort zone & it's like a walk in the park. Magnus is a human on the limit here, and it's astonishing and awe-inspiring to watch. So much respect. Honnold is a superhuman, and he's incredible in a way we can barely relate to - it's so far outside our frame of reference we just gawp. But Magnus is, in a way, like the rest of us only better; he faces and conquers all our fears, where we'd all just be like, nah, done six vids in six days, you know what, let's walk & talk & then I can go home. Instead, he free solos. That's proper balls - and not gung-ho; just measured, calm, afraid, overcome fear, climb big wall. Absolute 100% respect. Simply fantastic to watch his process and skill challenged, and seeing rationality overcome fear - and then to have the idea of his girlfriend (did we miss her name?) reacting like the rest of us watching the original, is inspired.
@CoolCommando1232 жыл бұрын
You've articulated my feelings better than I could have written. Honnold's climbing is incredible but difficult to comprehend, whereas I know how Magnus feels - to be high up, hunting nervously for the proper hold, only committing when I'm 200% certain it's the best (or only) way to proceed. At 23:00 I think Alex wants to say that in Europe cities are quite relatively close to each other (France, Spain, Germany. Maybe Norway has less city density?) whereas in the USA cities are really build in the middle of nowhere like huge deserts. So in that sense wilderness might feel bigger.
@arturdias6399 Жыл бұрын
Also in Europe, between cities there is a LOT of towns. In the states almost everyone lives in a city
@aleksmedis6698 Жыл бұрын
The wilderness is also just bigger I would say (although I agree with your point)- I feel the same as Alex coming from Australia to Europe- like yes, Norway has uninhabited places but Europe overall still has a higher population density than the US ( and a million times for than Aus) and even the 'wild' places- like in northern Finland, Romanian forests etc. still don't have the same feeling and yes, aren't as close to major cities. I used to live within the Sydney greater metro area and in my 5km covid lockdown radius I had 3 different climbing crag options- it was so easy to feel disconnected, now my closest outdoor climbing is 1hr drive away and is next to a road/train line. I try to find nature in Europe (I also live in one of the worst countries for such things) and it's nice but it's not as easy and it still doesn't have the same 'feeling' like I said. Yeah, most of the countries in Europe are tiny compared to the USA and the population is traditionally spread out like someone else mentioned in a response here. Even between cities, there are lots of towns and villages. Also, there's thousands of years of land use here so there's always traces of human occupation, even in remote places and the landscape is far from virgin with old forests all cut down, lots of agriculture etc... The USA has a lot of large areas that have been pretty much left untouched since the dawn of time. Even the states with the largest population densities have surprising amounts of virgin landscapes with very few exceptions mostly with the north eastern states. Population of the USA 332 mil vs EU 447 mil. I think the only places in Europe that would come close to mimicking the feel Alex speaks of are the nordic trio - Norway, Sweden, Finland - and even in those countries, you'd have to go far North somewhere because most areas are linked up with roads. Hard to get away from traces of human occupation. The native American occupants treaded very lightly on that land until the colonies rocked up just a few hundred years ago. There are very few places left on Earth with that kind of history :)

These is definitely no wilderness like in the US in western europe.

No, there’s literally huge swaths of land with no people, middle of us is largely unpopulated. Europe is so smal in comparison and has way more population, there aren’t empty areas

This is the reaction video we needed to see! I was so nervous watching the original video that I had to get up and walk away, even though I knew that it obviously had to have ended well or there wouldn't be a video in the first place.

Free soloing is actually very interesting. You have to completely dismiss any thought of fear and just be present in the moment. I like what Hannold says that he would never take a less experienced climber to this route, because he knows this route is easy for Magnus with the right mindset

this was a really fun reaction. honestly, what made the initial video so good for me wasn't so much you were on sight free soloing, it was the raw emotions you were going through. you could tell you were genuinely scared and the climb was stressing you out. it made you succeeding that much more enjoyable. your editing was beautiful and it created almost an action-like film experience for me. as yours both did, my hands too became sweaty and i was at the edge of my seat completely focused. i relate your film to action films these days, the later i find to be quite boring. not because the stunts or action is lack lustre, CGI today can bring to life terrifying scenes. no, its the emotions/vulnerability thats missing, the moments where a scene will slow down and really allow the audience to understand and experience the event along with you. action films today treat their audience like idiots that cannot stay focussed for more than 10min. they will include so many stunts and CGI moments that each go for 5 min and then move on to the next scene hoping to keep you watching by constantly throwing so much at you. as a result, you're never concerned for the characters because they're 'aweseome' they have amazing powers/abilities and are always in control. they never appear overly concerned and when they do what does it matter? 5min later the threat is over, they're rushing on to the next threat whilst avoiding a 100 bullets and jumping from cars like its nothing. in contrast your video only showed one threat; free soloing on site. there was no fast paced action or explosives for drama. instead, it was slow and very real; it allowed the audience to be there up close and just experience the struggle and beauty along with you. i think your editing really was superb and kept the audience engaged. you found the beautiful line between keeping your audience tense and allowing them to breathe. from the beginning, it was clear this was not something you were comfortable with but Alex's humour whilst putting you at ease, also calmed the viewer and initially it made for a somewhat light and carefree experience. when you cut to the go pro, however, it really gave the viewer insight to just how crazy a challenge you were attempting. it conveyed just how worried you were feeling, showed the difficulty of the task and was clear the very real cosequences if you slipped. at that moment I became so much more tensed up, you can slightly hear Alex talking at this moment but his audio is quieter and unclear during this scene. which is actually beautiful because it is not dissimilar to what you would experience when your heart is pumping, youre frozen in fear and people are talking around you but you don't really hear what they're saying. you dont get another cut, a view from Alex's perspective for quite a while. which ads the tension because Alex's perspective acts like a release of tension where there is a sense of calm and being in control. instead its just you trying to navigate your way up the climb and there is a sense of no room for error or chance to just breathe. this tension doesn't really let up until later and doesn't fully release until you complete the climb. so when you do reach the top; there is a sense of achievement from the audience's perspective and a wave of relief as if you have been there with you attempting the climb. that 30 min video felt like 10 minutes and shows just how well the content and editing were to keep the audience engaged. I don't think you need to do dangerous stunts like this to make good content and engage with your audience. ultimately i think what makes the best content is conecting wth your audience through the human experience whether it be light humour to sweat, grit and determination. its clear through your content your passion for rock climbing and it becomes something so envious yet enjoyable to watch as you enjoy your passion through filming. Your willingness to try new things is also something admirable. Your humour and how you interact with others is delightful. Your editing must take so much time and effort to complete but it really shows just how dedicated you are to this endeavour and it is quite artful. really enjoyable content!!!

That’s one of the best videos I have ever seen. It was more stressful watching your rewatch than watching the original video. What was really interesting is that years ago I used to rock climb (including a small amount of shortish, relatively easy, solos) and all the psychological points you mentioned here I totally get. I think what impressed me the most was that Magnus soled this big route having never climbed it before. I am also impressed at the really positive, calm, support and reassurance Alex provided before and during the climb. Totally impressed!

I can see that Alex keeping up the spirit and giving advice was really helpful --- however, had it been me, I would've clung to the rock and yelled at him to shut up in my desperate attempt to concentrate. 😆 It's a good thing I'm not a climber. 🫣

Alex is really a great coach. Keeping Magnus occupied with climbing and guiding him through the entire ordeal! He climbed in parallel with Magnus when he knew that the particular patch was harder. But yeah, not everyone’s cup of tea when one is limited by their own abilities even if you have the best coach. Awesome video!

Even if you never made another video in your life, having that video as your "best" video would be quite an achievement. Easily one of the all time best videos on youtube, so don't worry about topping it, just do you!

Biggest point I've have to say is never feel embarrassed or stupid/dumb in asking for help or rescue if your at a point you know you can't get out yourself out from. Get yourself some were safe you know you can hold out for a while. As help will take a while...but is on its way. 6 years experience in search and rescue. Where here to help and save life not to tell you off or embarrass you in anyway. ❤
