April1975. I watched as NVA soilders entered Saigon, the presidential palace on TV. I served from Dec 66 thru Dec 67 with the 4th infantry division as a 11b10.. as I watched the NVA march onto Saigon, I cried. So many lives lost, 58000 gi's killed.why?? For what??? We won that war, the politicians lost it!!!

My Dad was a Sgt. In the ARMY, his unit was the Big Red One & a combat soilder. He did 2 tours. When he got out thing's were pretty hard & he couldn't deal & left & it killed me but I wanted to be strong and not let my mom or anyone else see my terrible broken heart but they knew. A lot of time went by, he came back saw us when I was 16 & would come up from Atlanta & see us & then he disappeared when I was 19 or 20. I would find him & he was in and out again I found him in 1998 & he never left he remarried my Mom. I lost him this past September & I'm dying inside. I'm trying so hard not to let anyone see it, it's so hard. The reason I'm sharing probably way more than anyone cares is because he NEVER talked about his experiences over there & when I say NOTHING, I mean not a word. I remember he would have HORRIBLE nightmares & it made me cry. I have been watching some TV shows with the man I live with that are set in Vietnam and I AMAZED, HORRIFIED by what you men went thru & I am SO FREAKING PROUD OF MY DAD!! Things were never "normal" between us. Like him, I kept things inside. I told him several years ago that I truly understand him leaving when he got home & I forgave him.....he had returned from hell on earth and he had a lot of demons & he can't change what happened & all I ever wanted was to know if he loved me & I guess he did, I said it to him a few times & he would tell he loved me back, but he never said it 1st. SO IF YOU ARE A VETERAN & YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE & YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS LIKE THIS, PLEASE TELL THAT SOMEONE 1ST B4 YOU LEAVE THIS WORLD BECAUSE IT MATTERS MORE THAN YOU KNOW!!

I’m a Nam Vet, serving in Chu Lai 68-69 1st MAW and a second generation Marine, which I’m very proud of. I was lucky to be stationed on an air base and I’m thankful for that, even though I sometimes feel guilty about it. But there’s two things I don’t like that some civilians say, like “thank you for your service”, instead of WELCOME HOME, since we never were welcomed back. And “all Nam Vets are heroes”. A lot are, like the ones who never came home alive and those who earned a medal for it. But all I did was my job and came home. There’s absolutely nothing heroic about that.

I'm an Australia, my brother was K.I.A in 1971 in Phuoc Thuy Province. My brother made many, many American friends, he would write and tell me how great his American friends were. Even the gunners on the Huey's kept the VC at bay so he could get off. I respect all and especially you who served your country. I was a Police Officer in full time employment, so I was not able to go to Vietnam. I love my brother and all those that served with him. Thank you for serving your country.

I watch these films and wonder where my life went, I'm 76 and we got drafted right out of high school. My neighbor's son will graduate from high school soon and he's just too young to do what we had to do. Going to war is death for both sides there are no real winners it's horrible to see someone die right before you on either side. I still hate any draft dodger they are cowards and don't receive any respect.

I joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1996. I was nearly sent to Iraq in 2003 but didn't get the call. I have all kinds of feelings about that, but I'm proud to have served. I hear the entire us military is having trouble making recruiting quotas and the draft may become a thing in the future. I wonder how this younger generation will do with that. I don't think my generation, gen x, would have done well with a draft. The older millennials are impressive because of how they volunteered after 9/11. It all depends I guess.

I know there are pros and cons in what I'm saying but I feel like EVERY U.S. MALE should have to do a tour of duty in the military after graduating high School, before they can work a job,go to college,or have any rights whatsoever. Even handicapped men can serve in some capacity. And would feel like they had done their part. But EVERY man should have to. It would be a great thing to serve your country and pay some kind of debt towards your freedom. It would change alot of things and the way people appreciate our flag. Discipline is a good thing, it's not just punishment, it's a great way to build character as individuals as well as a people of a nation. Thank God for Jesus and Veterans, I love you All for my salvation and and freedom. Please don't decide everything in your life for yourselves and your times. Think of the children and the future they could have. . God bless America. And forgive my prejudice for the Vietnam Veterans, you have a special place in my heart and I admire your unique experiences and the way you have done your duty and not appreciated but still would do it all over again. I know you are a special breed of people that makes so many of us proud to be Americans. I just want to add that I am also leaning toward the WWII Veterans more and more, I thank you All. Any man who fought during this awful war is my hero. My only wish is that I could have been there with you men to help fight our enemies. As a former Combat Engineer with the U.S.Army, I have learned that these Men have fought to save us from Tynery, I have the Utmost respect for our fighting men from those days during the Vietnam war. Only those of us who served during this God awful time know and understand what we all had to deal with! Thank you for the words you've spoken here but, believe me; " you wouldn't have wanted to be there. It was bloody, harsh, cold, miserable, lonely and there were some that committed suicide because they didn't know what they signed up for. If we had good strong leaders letting us do what we were trained for, it would've been over in less than 1 yr. Johnson fucked up badly😮 because he thought he knew what it took to win this war but, we know how it ended! I was on the front line as a trained sniper and even though I killed many of the North, we didn't make much progress moving forward! We lost so many young men and many were never found and yet, we were (as soldiers) were deemed the enemy and hated by many............ No hero's welcome or thank you from the public but I've survived the horror that haunts me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was kid my came back from over there,& one night he was showing us all pictures from the war & in this one picture it was a jungle, & he said, tell me what you see in this picture. And we looked & we looked. And we said all we see is a big jungle. Well he showed us with a magnifying glass that there was 47 Marines looking right at us. Spooky.

Lost my uncle in SouthVietnams Central , Highlands mid- 3 / 68 , tail end of bloody ass TET , nearly 2wks. B- 4 my 11th bday .Head kia somewhere near Pleiku . He was in the 1st Cav Air- Mobile . He was a warrant officer flying a Huey that took.a hit from Viet- Cong ( communist guerilla ) RPG , while trying to extricate wounded during a fight . Seen neighbors sons , and friends bros. sent there from 1965 to 1969 ; last one arriving hm. By late 1971 . All definite PSTD cases .

Those who fought , and resisted Communism , whether the " Berlin Airlift " 1948 , "Korean War "1950 to 1953 the " Cuban Missile Crisis " , the "Czechoslovakian Revolt " mid- July 1968 , the "Vietnam War " from the USA involvement from the mid50s to Spring of 1975 , when North Vietnam blitz , and over ran SouthVietnam late spring 1975 the stance that Democracy stood up to eventually causing the Soviet Union , and Communist Eastern Block Nations to devine , and now cease to exist . My mother fled East Prussia in mid March 1945 , maybe mid April 1945 , from the Soviet military onslaught barreling it's way to Berlin , Germany . Mom wound up in Leipzig , Germany only to witness bitter street fighting between determined USA troops , and fanatical Nazi troops as she , and her brother , and sister hid in a gutted , bombed out house basement . Mom was sexually assaulted by American troops(s) , and had nightmares from that incident when she was 13 years old . My mom , and her brother , and sister narrowly escaped Communist East Germany in 1948 . She said not to far off in a distance you could hear Communist East German Guards , and their dogs ; dogs barking loudly , but mom and brother ,vAnd sister made it safe to the west ! But , mom had her father ,vAnd uncle kia during the War in Europe .

That war was unwinnable. There were two kinds of citizens in Vietnam: Communists, who wanted to rule by Mafia type intimidation and payoffs to the top, and the rest, who wanted the same thing, minus Communists. These brave men were treated with no compassion and disrespected for serving their country. Remember majority were drafted into service. My husband was in the jungles near Pleiku in 1968 1969. Gratefully he went to AIT and was a drill instructor before he went over,staff Sergant, LRRP leader. He suffered tragically the rest of his life with PTSD reliving many days and nights of in country horrors. He also had hearing loss, a detached retina,surgeries on his shoulder. It took almost almost 3 decades before he got care through the VA. Guys had no hearing protection, no eye protection, firing automatic weapons week after week, stalking the enemy, fighting the enemy,jumping on and off helicopters, sitting wrapped in ponchos in the jungle during the monsoons. Returning to hate, the guys turned often to alcohol, drugs. My husband went to VA hospital in an alcoholic stupor and stayed for over 30 days. Did they treat his eye when he was there,no, offer hearing advice, no. But he never had another drink in his life. And he never returned to a VA facility for decades. He passed from Agent Orange cancer of the lung that metastasized to his brain. Our family is so proud of him for what he accomplished after returning from hell on earth. But it truly is a sin how these combat veterans were treated for years. And then they had to fight for decades for help with their destroyed minds and bodies by serving their country.

Many young soldiers had serious issues after their tour of duty. As morale deteriorated, drug use also became an issue. Uncle Sam concealed this problem by first "drying out" the worst cases on an island off the coast of Vietnam and then they were shipped overseas and not back to the states. I remember entire outfits as barely being functional in Germany. Some soldiers were so drug-addled that Uncle Sam allowed them off base, out of sight and they would just appear for payroll. I remember one soldier as half dressed, showing up at the garage where I worked with his scales for measuring his drug doses. A very sad time. Around 1970-71.

Many people didn't want to go to Vietnam, as it was a horrible and unjust war, so they decided to leave the US because they didn't want to fight in a war they thought was unjust. Look, I'm not saying that all the soldiers should've deserted or everyone should've avoided the draft, but I am saying you need to understand why people did this.

I was conscripted to go to a place to kill people I never met, had done nothing to them or them to me, just because your ex president LBJ said so. On my last day my mate took a shit on the Merican! flag and then wiped his ass with it. Not to be out done, I pissed all over it. Since then I have no sympathy to what happens to the US.

Although formerly on the Eastern Bloc side, those who are interested by facts will probably find it interesting to learn that our king (tsar) Boris III tried to negotiate peace and exit from WW2 on the side of the allies, but was poisoned by the NKVD and soviets in order for Bulgaria to be captured without any resistance by the soviets as he was the primary obstacle. Because of this socialism ruined my country. But after 1990 things are slowly but surely coming to place, namely - we've finally taken our place alongside the middle and western-european countries. NATO is needed - look whats happening in Ukraine. But so was the war in Vietnam - without it, China would have absolutely captured and taken control of almost all far Asia except for South Korea. Therefore I want to thank each and every former US, UK & Commonwealth serviceman or woman for their service in 'Nam. It was a just war, but one ruined by the quasi-pacifists, the indecision of the politicians, mainly Nixon, and the leftist media.

This is a war that the USA should have never been involved with from the beginning. I totally understand the North Vietnamese fighting for freedom from the occupation of the Western powers. You have to admit that North Vietnam were determined to unite their country and get rid of the occupying Western oppressors. Little North Vietnam defeated France the USA and South Vietnam all at once. At the end of the day, I say R.I.P to all of the wounded and passed soldiers on both sides because they were fighting a war for the very wealthy class of people/ fighting for territory and resources so that the super wealthy can own territory resources and even owning the people as well.

We actually won the war! After the Christmas 72 bombings, the north Vietnamese were willing to finally end the war on our terms. So we backed off, pulled our ground troops, got most of our pows back, and left the arvn to fight for their country. Well the north lied and attacked en mass on the south. After the U.S. troops were largely already gone. Anyway, the south fought for two years, before capitulating to the north. So it can be argued that we won! The north did not defeat us!they waited until we left to win.
