Combatives is a term used to describe martial arts/self defense training used by LEO, military, and civilians in a non-competitive environment. Is this training the pinnacle of personal protection, or just a marketing term to catch your interest?

Did combative training for about 9 months. I used to think I can take on a guy. What a HUGE eye opening experience. I actually think all females should take at least one combatives class in their life. Also height variations can be very deceiving. I sparred with a very short man and it turned out he was an amateur ring fighter. You never know what one person is capable of.

I'm really glad you spoke about recognizing prefight indicators. I really believe knowing this skill and how to bring things down is key. It may sound extreme but I'd even recommend taking some basic courses on behavior and psychology would help a lot. Having said that, when it has become clear a fight is going to happen, it is important to be able to go from 0 to 100 immediately. You gain the element of surprise for yourself if you can meet the threat with sudden, overwhelming violence. If you have the first part down, you can appear to be an unleashed beast on the outside, while all the time you are calm on the inside. You absolutely have to know when and how to turn it off as well.

Training efficiency should select criteria and techniques. From my experience, I’d say the best training involves 70% in the “mma” practice, 15% firearms training, 10% survival and scenarios study, 5% medical. With doing a stint of initial focus (like a doing a boot camp) on the categories other than “mma.” Focus-situation “drilling,” has helped me the most; meaning that one has an objective different From sport, the norm, or sparring partner. So….my long winded attempt at saying: mma with various mindsets/objectives.

I dont charge for teaching the martial arts I practice, because not only people with money deserve to ba able to train. And through this approach I have found a lot of students who couldn't afford to pay have turned into very good students. But the art I teach is a classical martial art, based mostly on weapons.

Really liked your conclusion. Combat sports are awesome, and for personal protection they are a great foundation. But there is much more that comes into play with self-defense, like de-escalation, weapons and multiple attackers. You would never learn de-escalation in a combat sport, because the context is already a mutually agreed fight. I've had some really bad luck during my adolescent years, and was assaulted five times between the age of 13 and 23. In three of these situations, I was able to de-escalate (one of them involved a guy sticking pieces of broken glass against my neck). Not appearing hostile and staying calm is key. But talking someone back to reasonableness is not always possible, and I was beaten up pretty badly when I was 13. Wrestling is probably one of the best skills to learn, also for dealing with weapons. But this needs to be trained.

Yes, completely agree. Krav is really more of an attitude than it is a style. The actual skills you're going to get depend a lot on what the Krav instructor has as his base -- MMA, Muay Thai, Jiujitsu, Wing Chun, whatever. For me, aside from the obvious life-and-death consequences, the main thing that sets combatives apart from sport fighting is that its an UNEVEN COMPETITION at the outset. Its not one-v-one in a flat, empty geometric ring against someone in the same gender and weight class that starts and ends with a bell on a set timer. There's a lot more variables to the fight to consider. I usually tell my friends to look for a reputable martial arts school that has a "self-defense" or "combatives" program/class rather than to look for a "combatives" school. Then you know you're getting someone who has a foundational technique and the class will teach you specifically how to apply that style in a non-sport scenario, rather than just a lot of cargo pants and yelling.

As a Combatives instructor as well as a Kung Fu and Japanese Jujitsu instructor (who has also trained Boxing, Sanda, and now Judo), I agree with this video. One thing I would add is that Combatives techniques typically don't go beyond gross motor movements which makes them easy to recall when "turning on the aggression" so to speak. Having fought in Kickboxing and Sanda tournaments as well as been a bouncer (and now training to get into Judo competition), I definitely see the value in being able to turn on aggression and refine martial art skills.

Additional i can speak from my experience as a teacher in the special forces (not US) for Selfdefense and Application force, thats how it is in our curiculum. Its a mix of both. Basic Stuff, of (you can say mma) , and mixed with Eye, throat and groins , and of course our weapons. As a short example. In our country sometimes we help out in heavy correction. One day a 340 pound guy was sitting in top of me. A lot of things went wrong before. Anyway. Shrimp or trap and roll didnt help. But, (nearast target, closest weapon), i hit him in the groins and shrimped out. It was one of the effortless shrimps i ever made. I hope you got my point. There are some other examples. On the other hand, we have also sparring sessions, and the hand to hand combat finishing test. Is one round on mats for 5 minutes. No eyegouching, no groinkicking, the rest is open. For free. lol. We had an WAKA Kickboxing worldmaster in our class. He did well, but he got smashed from another guy with Hap Ki Do experience. Hap Ki Do is worse, normally. The weight diffrence was about 12 kg. So, what i like to say is. It depends on so much circumstances. In the end, it depends on the person, and normally what he is training for!!!!

(not saying it's NOT for some- but I've never found it necessary).. I also DO NOT PUNCH-- damn near broke my wrist once- and switched to palm heel strikes- and found them more effeciive, easily converted to something else mid strike if needed- and LOOKS more DEFENSIVE in case some fool is filming it and the cops see it later. You are right about the Escalating process-- the REAL street attack-- is a knife guy that knows what he's doing- and if that is the case- you MOST LIKELY will NOT see it coming because he's not out flailing around like zorro-- he'll come up and you're down before you kow what hit you!!! I've survived two of those- and ONE I did manage to get the knife (in more ways than ONE- and have the scars to prove it).. AGREED on this-- another good video

Self defense is a tough topic for martial arts. I’ve been training for years and have trained in “traditional” schools and “modern” gyms. What I have not found was a place that understands real world violence. The best I found was an individual “Tim Larkin” specifically his book “When violence is the answer”. Real world self defense is not glamorous and has serious consequences. This I think is why it’s not really taught.
@CombatSelfDefense
@CombatSelfDefense Жыл бұрын
I think it’s also a separate topic from martial arts. Being good at martial arts or fighting doesn’t necessarily make you a self defense expert, and I think too many instructors don’t know that.

I like this guy's explanation of combatives. He covered all bases, but some of his insights I don't agree with. Kelly McCann put it best '' Combatives is something you DO to somebody; martial arts are something you do WITH somebody.'' True combatives has it roots in WW2 battlefield fighting. It's simple...but most important of all, proven against someone trying to kill you. I think that's important. Unfortunately, as pointed out above, shorting the masters out from the camouflage pants brigade can sometimes be difficult for beginners. For example ''The Todd Group'' in New Zealand is headed by the current Master Chief Instructor to the NZ SAS. He trained with, or was trained by head students of all the Combative luminaries. Martial artists and military personal come from all over the world to train with him. He runs three levels of training for civilians. There are no belts, but to pass your level you must fight in a no holds barred fight. The injuries can be horrific. There's also training for women and disabled folk. In my opinion, the older you get, the more you need the simplicity of combatives. Going to the ground or executing a fight stopping front kick aren't an option for the average 70 year old person.

You should combine the both “Combative and Self Defense” know days everybody has a cell phone so your being recorded like you said the soft skills and body language are important. Self defense should be over 50% of the training. Because legally you want to be defending yourself in the court of public opinion. The Combative should be over 50% because when it goes down you want to have the power and strength to lay someone down with 1 punch or hit of any sort. Either way interesting discussion.

Combatives training seems to take the worst of traditional martial arts and competitive fighting. Not based on learning basic principles, not based on hard physical focussed training. Too much like Krav Maga. Though I love situational awareness etc I think we also need to understand context. Restraint techniques are useful in some situations where it's not just a nameless thug eg if it is friend/family member/teenager/woman. Self defense is varied and extremely different from one on one combat in many cases. Not saying though that MMA can't also be applied..for example when a drunk guy roughly grabbed by wife by the hair, I just took him and broke his balance backward with rear naked choke. Traditional/MMA? Could be classed as either. Wasn't a situation to strike him, try to deescalate or throw him. Infact I love chokes kkkkkk, my go to technique.

Why train combatives if you can train wrestling and boxing? Combatives after all are just a limited set of wrestling and boxing basics/techniques plus maybe some bayonet fencing, knife combat and weapon disarms. I know that the media portrays combatives as a shortcut to becoming a good fighter, but that's just not the case irl.
