I was on the American Special Forces team that was in that area while you were there. We drove into that compound one time and after that never went back in there. You guys were insane to stay there (I know it wasn’t your choice). I heard that they would walk right up next to the compound and chuck grenades over the walls. We weren’t even in that town and we were in firefights every few days. We went and helped secure the resupply just outside the town and got in a firefight. Those were some crazy times. Glad to know guys like you made it out.

Hi Hugh, my respects and Mana to you. I was lucky as I started in C Coy 3 Para in the very old days ( my first four Army numbers are 2358! ) and we still had blokes in the battalion who survived Arnhem and the rest talked about the Canal Zone, Palestine and Jordan. We listened and kept our mouths closed. That three month posting without artillery support was a disgrace but not a surprise. It always depended on who you had for a CO. Few of us 22 year men have survived but there is a one truism amongst us, once a Para, always a Para! Cheers mate. Harera

One of 3 highlights of my Iraq tour was crossing pathes with a sniper contractor who invited me to his overwatch. Ilooked through the binos passed to me, surveyed the AoR, guessed at forthcoming Op and made suggestions for my use. He was professional and trusting. A marvelous encounter 😊 Listening to this gentleman reminded me of this surreal experience. Thank you.

The deployment to the 'Platoon Houses' in north Helmand strikes me as one of the most insane command decisions of the entire campaign, made by Helmand's new governor Engineer Mohammed Daoud in the Bost Hotel lobby in Lashkar Gah as I understand it. I'd also say the battle for Helmand was lost in 2005 when UK ambassador Rosalind Marsden (acting on SIS/MI6 instructions) demanded Helmand's old governor, Sher Mohammed Akhundzada, was sacked (against everyone else's advice). Take that back to the 2004 SAS reconnaissance of Helmand telling MPs that "there isn't an insurgency in Helmand but we can give you one" and I've come to the conclusion the Platoon Houses mission was setup to force Westminster to increase budgets and deployment numbers - all part of their Great Game, where soldiers lives are just gambling chips to them. My greatest respect goes to all who survived the deployment - my sorrow to those who didn't make it home.

Hugh was my platoon Sergeant when I turned up to battalion in January 2009. He strangled me once after struggling on a run. I was never unfit, l'd just eaten a massive Cornish pasty before we set off and it sat on my stomach😂. Very good soldier, a lot of respect for him.

"He strangled me". Haha nonsense! If you are who i think you are, i got a bit shouty once.

Total respect due. CPL Brian Budd VC picture in background says it all. 3 Para got hammered and the idiots back in the UK were complaining about ammo expenditure. About right for UK civil servants and politicians. His comment when first under fire. So true. Crack and thump.! Is that what I think it is. Crack and thump again! Oh bollocks! Here we go. So so true. Good blokes.

Its weird because 4/73 battery could of fixed the IDF problem. They have counter battery radar as part of their OP kit.
@HHourPodcast7 күн бұрын
Unfortunately that kit wasn't in our AO, Nor was the unit.

From what I saw of the artillery on that tour, they were lucky to land their rounds in Helmand Province! 3 PARA Mortars were our best asset (along with US airpower).
@HHourPodcast5 күн бұрын
@@paulmcmellon2500 there was a dropshort in MQ which they later denied. 6 casualties.
