Great Video. Embarrassed to say but I never had a father figure growing up to teach me this type of stuff. Now as a grown adult, I Own a small tractor that is stuck in snow and I am going to buy one of these to help get it out. So thank you for the Education.

I found this very helpful. I had never used a come along before until today. Notice a couple of things - if you look at the video, you will notice that he has some rings attached to the come along hooks. Get a couple of those if you don't have them, it'll make it easier to attach your chains to the come along. Another thing, the come along is fairly heavy, you are going to get a little exercise using it if you are using it to pull up a bunch of small stumps like I am doing. Also, this video will make a lot more sense if you watch it, then go out and hook it up, then come back and watch the video again. Then you'll go "oh, I get it now". Remember to use the come along between TWO chains and remember that you are going to attach to the object you want to move first. Attach to your anchor point second.

Thank you so much for the helpful, thorough safety information. I have to cut firewood and have some cut sections that I would estimate are approx 500 lbs and more.At 5'1" and 120 lbs, I certainly don't have the physical strength to move these things. Once these large sections are in position, I do have the proper chain saw to handle cutting them down to a workable size for splitting. And no, I don't have the help I need right now, but getting a nice come a long will help get the job done. Again, thanks so much for the safety information, and also, thanks for your service.

Patricia Roselli you can also look into using a chain fall you can get one at harbor freight or amazon the only thing is chain falls have to be rigged over head so you would need a tree branch or a gin pole or something similar

Appreciate the video. Last I used one was early 90's in the fire service. All the hydraulics took over the daily operations and never needed to since - at least in my operations. When I used the come along I don't recall all the options now available. They were heavy and felt durable lasting a lifetime of service even in the fire service. I need one for a root system I need to get rid of. Axe, chainsaw, chains and a come along. What brand would you recommend? I like choices when I know what I talking about which starts and ends with knots and food:). Appreciate any input.

Is the 1:1 or free hook you speak of the same thing as the term double purpose? Also, is a snatch block the way to do essentially the same thing as the 1:1 free hook pully you mention and show in your video? How was that free hook actually put onto the pully? Was the end of the cable removed in some manner. Sorry if this sort of questioning seems dumb, but I have never worked with such and have viewed several videos where no one ever seems to show just how to hook up such on a standard cable puller or come along. In the box stores locally, the staff working there mostly have never even used a come along to know how to answer these questions to begin with. Thanks for any info on this. Nice video.

Tim, Great video! however your operations of the come-a-long are not entirely correct. All of your information is accurate except for the operations of the tool to create slack or release the cable while under tension. This is probably to most common mistake I see with come-a-long operations. When you want to release the come-a-long while under tension the proper method is to flip the direction of travel switch towards the stationary hook or in the open position. This allows the tool to work in a ratcheting fashion. With the lever flipped open you now can lever the device all the way towards the cable side of the tool. The direction of travel lever will then auto engage and release the cable one click at a time. This allows no hands around the cable area during tension operations. You will also maintain tension control at all times.
