In this movie, he sees them on the beach at the beginning. That's how he gets the necklace that he gives her at the end. Very Shakespeare: the fool knows more than anyone else.

He certainly gives off a sense of omniscience. And yes, in the film, Feste observes from the cliffs as Viola and her group are washed ashore from the wreck and hide from the Illyrian soldiers.

I always saw him as an omniscient figure and kind of just figured Shakespeare wrote him as that.

Kingsley's brow furrow at the end of this song. Right before this clip is done. Genius, and the most perfect reaction to what is happening. *cough*

There are not words to describe the beauty of this. Something about it just rings true. Much more so than the classical arrangements of the text.
@Shakerags12 жыл бұрын
You're right; in the text, many characters seem to note Cesario (Viola's male persona) has feminine aspects. "Diana's lip is not more smooth or rubious" -Orsino In the film, Feste witnesses Viola's arrival via shipwreck, and returns to her in the finale a necklace she lost on the beach which had represented her losing her 'Viola' identity.

@RoguishBlonde I have found that in many productions, Feste sees Viola come onshore and hears the conversation between she and the captain. Also, the point of Feste is that he is sort of omniscient, and knows what is ACTUALLY going on.

Gotta love his character
@LaughGenerator14 жыл бұрын
@RoguishBlonde Actually, Feste is obviously more intelligent than any other character, save Viola, in the text. Shakespeare only had language and wordplay to show the level of thought in the characters, and Feste is the most witty of them all. It is suggested that Feste in the play knows that Viola is a woman. It is never said outright, but it may be true (he wishes her a beard at one point). It really depends on how you look at it, but i like to think so. It makes things more interesting!

I just love this version. Not just in english, but also in portuguese. lovely!

@RoguishBlonde in this production, just after the twins first appear simultaneously at the end, it is Feste who returns the necklace Viola took off at the beach after the shipwreck, so confirming that he knew all along. Not sure about other productions, though the banter about the beard certainly implies it

As so often it's up to the production and you as an audience.

I think it depends on the director. One particular uni prof I've taken Shakespeare with (most of prof's academic history is based on study of Shakespeare) has said that many productions include it - she said something to the effect of that the audience reaction can sometimes be amusing when the play is performed by the traditional all male cast. lol.
@vendettealouette15 жыл бұрын
Shakespeare rarely added any kind of stage direction to his plays, and so this wasn't pre-directed in the script. Also, this is something that works much more in a movie setting, it's almost too subtle for the more broad scope of vision the stage presents.

Come away, come away, death, And in sad cypress let me be laid. Fly away breath, fly away, fly away breath; I am slain by a fair cruel maid. Not a friend, not a friend greet My poor corpse, where my bones shall be thrown. A thousand thousand sighs to save, Lay me, O, where Sad true lover never find my grave, To weep there... ___________________________ Allthough they've modified the text to suit the music I rather like this tune. ;)

@RoguishBlonde At the beginning of the film, Feste sees Viola and the survivors come ashore and may have spied her getting her hair cut and saving her brother's clothes, And if he knew that Orsino soon acquired a new manservant after that, he probably put two and two together. As a professional fool hee would know lots about the art of disguise, as seen when he impersonates Sir Topas.

i think feste knows all along that viola's a woman. he's smarter than everyone else. maybe not in the text, but i think i remember evidence in the acting of this movie that suggests that. anyone know?
@ZhiyingFlora5 жыл бұрын
woah i'm replying 11 years ltr but i think he does tbh esp in the movie. it was shown that he was sitting on some rocks by the bay watching when Viola, the captain and some other sailors were washed by the shore so i guess he kinda knew. this is further proven when he teased Viola/Cesairo why she/he doesn't have chin hair, lowkey claiming that her mustache is fake
