Daddy, daddy, come and look
See what I have found
A little ways away from here
While digging in the ground
Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
It's nothing, just a picture-book
They had before the war
Daddy, daddy, come and see
Daddy, come and look
Why, there's four or five
Little Melinda girls
Inside my picture book
Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
There were lots of little girls like you
Before they had the war
Oh Daddy, daddy, come and see
Daddy, hurry do
Why, there's someone
In a pretty dress
She's all grown up like you
Won't you tell me why
Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
That someone is your Mummy
You had before the war
Daddy, daddy, tell me if you can
Why can't things be
The way they were
Before the war began
Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
The answer lies in yesterday
Before they had the war ...

I was 14 in 1972 but I discovered this melody when I I was 20+. Fullish was our Soviet government to ban all of the Western rock culture. If they understood and allowed to translate some of the antiwar lyrics ... You probably do not know our Soviet antiwar songs. Here is the one. Just feel the pain of the people of country that have lost 26 000 of its sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of more than 100 nations and many religions . Almost every family here have suffered . The vidio of 1974 kzbin.info/www/bejne/injcp51sidOdba8

I remember this sad and beautiful ballad from going back to my teenage hood. I had one or two of URIAH HEEP'S albums. Sadly mankind has stil not learnt to this day. Wars cause nothing but death and destruction, when will we ever learn, when will we learn. That is also a song about stupid, pointless war. No-onewins.😢

This is one of my all time favorite songs. I lived in Germany at the time. Reminds me of the Irish Revolution. i used listen to the wives calling in everyday about losses. Sad, but beautiful!

This is EXACTLY what I imagined a video for this song would look like! Even though the song is about the World War, the images it conveys are like scenes out of medieval England or Northern Europe.

It seems to me, the 70’s were the best time to be alive. I’m 35 years old and I wish we could go back to the 70’s. I would have loved to lived then.

Impressive, a timeless song. This was my first record I heard of U.H. an since then a die hard fan of David Byron + ( The best front man of all times). The bass player in this one is Paul Newton from The Gods, after him came the genius Gary Thain +. An also UFO has a song come away Melinda!.
