Going to Shakespeare and co and meeting Sylvia the owner 4 years ago, was the best day in my life so far. Edit: if you can't visit (or just want to relive the experience) read ' A History of the Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart' it's a non fic about the store, the OG owner (Sylvia's dad), the people who used to visit and sleep in the store, when Allen Ginsberg used to do readings... It's purely magical ✨

Thanks for recommending the first one ! As someone studying in Paris, I love going to bookshops. I usually buy in English because it's a bit less expensive. I had no idea the first one existed but I might go very soon ! Generally I go mostly in the 1st arrondissement because it's where my university is (fun fact if you didn't know, but there is a university in the Louvre). If you want to go back to Paris, I can recommend you Galignani. It's one of the oldest, of not the eldest, bookshops in Europe. You can found a lot of books and I was really surprised because they have plenty of fantasy and science-fi books. I found the place sooooo pretty. I also like to go to Smith & Son, in the same stree (rue de Rivoli). In the shop there is also a small grocery shop (as someone who lived in Australia and loves to go to England, I really miss some things that are hard to find in France) and a café.

Fun video. I didn't know about Abbey Bookstore. Thanks. I'm going to presume you already have a copy of Leigh Bardugo's King of Scars since you didn't buy it. Right now I'm reading Crooked Kingdom and it's so good that I cannot wait for the electricity to return. I'm in Louisiana and the electricity is out because of Hurricane Ida. Internet works on both phone and this Tablet, but no electricity. Weird. I'm glad you had a great time in Paris.

I've been to Shakespeare & Co, and a few larger bookstores in Paris with English version sections, but I didn't know about Abbey Bookstore. And having just googled and discovered articles about the "20 best English bookstores in Paris", I guess I'll just have to find a way to visit again. ;) But until then, I'm lucky to live only a few hours away from Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon.

Lovely video. I've been to Shakespeare & Co. Bliss. There's something glorious about that kind of bookshop. The ones that are like labyrinths and mix new and old books and where it feels like when you're gone the books spill out and mingle before tucking themselves all back onto the shelves before they open. I bought a couple of books there the last time I visited. Plus cat for the bonus points.

It should be mentioned that the current Shakespeare and Company is not the original store founded in 1919 by Sylvia Beach. That closed in 1941, while the current store opened a decade later. The current owner was named for Beach, but is not related. None of which is meant to suggest that the current store does not also have a notable history.

Ive been in the Shakespeare and Company bookshop a few times. really enjoy going there. There is a book callled Books, Baguettes and Bedbugs by Jeremy Mercer based on his time staying at the Shakespeare and Co bookshop which is a good read. I read The Yellow Wallpaper for my American Studies degree and did an essay on it. Really good novella.

For a truly magical insight into the early days of Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Co. bookshop there is no better introduction than Ernest Hemingway's memoir " A Moveable Feast" which recounts his time as a struggling young writer in Paris as well as his encounters with the likes of Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce et al.

I like the The Abbey Bookshop because it's pretty, but their books are so expensive that I never want to go there... I really often go to Shakespeare and co because of the atmosphere, but I never end up buying anything from them because they sell their books slightly more than the actual price ... honestly my go-to for books in English is Gibert, just across the street from the Sorbonne. It may not be as pretty as these two bookshops, but it has a great selection and the books are sold to their actual prices ! Loved the video tho :)
