being from England and never having much exposure to western riding, I always thought it seemed very harsh and to be honest I wasn't a fan for a very long time. Watching this video and seeing how down to earth and dedicated you are to these horses has honestly really changed my perception of it- it's fantastic to see what fantastic lives these animals have and finding your channel has made me feel a lot more educated on reining, you've really warmed me up to it. Keep up the good work.

Matt Mills Like you said glad you made that call. Carmine works better w/o all That testosterone to mess with. He may prove to be a great gelding way more than he would have been as a distracted stallion, one good run and a bunch of not so good runs because of stud attitude is not worth keeping him intact.

I am a horse lover, never really done more than love them from afar. I have a question. I have just started watching your videos, and you have in two days mentioned several horses were recently castrated. These were mature stallions. I am wondering was this done late so you got the full growth potential of a stallion, then wanted to settle them down while in competition? Could you explain what you are trying to achieve and if there is a reason to do it so late?
@mattmillsreining1
@mattmillsreining1 4 жыл бұрын
So those stallions were not mature. They were 3 years old. They were castrated because they were beginning to become to aggressive and unruly. So rather than continue having to reprimand them all the time. We chose to simplify their life by eliminating the testosterone.
@julieenslow5915
@julieenslow5915 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattmillsreining1 Good enough, thank you. I should have said "adult" - meaning they had their full physical growth on them, not mature, as that has too many meanings beyond that stage. It is my understanding that waiting for the animal to have it's full growth improves it's potential performance as a neck reining horse (insert the plan for how the animal is to be used) or whatever. Would you agree with that?

Hearing your comment on Stoney, how he heard you say you would geld and he straightened up...gives me hope that my gelding, who at 7yo has decided to have temper tantrums and heard me say I was going to sell him, will continue on his best behavior that he has given me this past week. I've had him since he was 2 and he has never given me trouble till now

Jannie Drake, we all have our moments including our horses. Stay patient! Sometimes sudden changes in temperament can be related to stomach ulcers. Get yourself some Ulcergard from the feed store and try it. It definitely won’t hurt and I’ve seen some amazing results with it! Let me know if it helps! Good luck. 👍🏾〽️

@@mattmillsreining1 thank you. I will do that and I have an appointment next month to get him scoped just to make sure. Guess it wouldnt hurt to treat before hand. I sent him to a trainer with an indoor so I could ride during the winter. So I'm sure that would cause them. I just would think ulcers would cause him to act up all the time.

Jannie Drake, sounds good! I quit scoping them and just treat them. I’ve found ulcers to be unpredictable. I think when riding in particular that acid gets to splashing around...

Do you prefer geldings to studs, Matt? I can appreciated a well trained horse through and through but I've never felt like I could fully trust a stud. They have that little bit of "edge" that makes me just a bit more aware of what they're doing around me, especially on the ground lol.
