My husband is Japanese and I talked to him about the “hearken” kanji. Japanese and Chinese kanji share many similar characters so it may also be similar in Chinese. The one in the book is Japanese as “ear, mind, heart” and he pulled out his Japanese D&C and it’s the first character in the book! The “ear” character alone is used for the word “listen” so I love that it means “listen with your heart and mind” -so beautiful!

Ron Palmer Comment of Come Follow Me Thank you for this lesson. I have a new, more deeply feeling for the Doctrine and Covenants. I am 82 years old, my wife is in last stages of Alzheimer's, what joy he have in our Savior and the blessings of His Temple. We joined this the Restored Church of Jesus Christ 50 years ago. I was a Baptist minister at the time and was looking for the Restoration and I found the truth and the Fullness of the Gospel. Even my father a former Baptist minister also told me that Mormons are not Christian. I said that is a lie put out by the devil. How do you know, have you read the Book of Mormon, no, then read it. After 4 months of my pestering him, he and my mother read the Book of Mormon to convince me of my folly. They came to me and asked me to baptize them after reading the Book of Mormon. They had heard the lie about the Mormons and perpetuated the lie in ignorance. I was guilty also until the Holy Spirit stunned me while preaching a sermon and I said something negative about other scriptures, such as the Book of Mormon, with these words "how do you know that is true", I did not know for myself and I began a quest to find out. When the missionaries began teaching me I knew it was true. My wife opposed me having anything to do with the Mormons. I told her to change the way she was praying, ask God if the Church is true, she changed her prayers and excitedly came to me and told me that a light appeared in her room and a voice told her "your husband is seeking to serve God, follow him;" she was immediately converted and asked me to baptize her. The 1st year 14 members of our families (by father and mother included) joined the Church. My father served as a Bishop and he and my mother served a full time senior mission to Bath New York when they retired. My wife served many callings including a Relief Society president and I in the Bishopric and many local and stake callings. I am currently the Ward organist. THIS IS THE RESTORED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST. Life is short, eternity is forever. Which is most important? This is the time to prepare for Eternity, read the Book of Mormon again if you have before. I just read he scriptures again, during this pandemic and gained a renewed testimony of them. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Time stamp for me is 50:00 to the end. I love the idea that truth is not exclusive to our church. I always felt like saying our church was the ONLY true church felt alienating to others. There is so much GOOD in the world and good things are not reserved for a small portion of God's children, He loves ALL of His children and would of course want to bless all who seek good.
@taddnlace4 жыл бұрын
My favorite part of this study was in Time Stamp 52:34 when you talk about the LIVING church and how that is what makes us unique. As I thought about the meaning of living, I too went on a word study. I found it interesting that living has really three different ways that it is used. Living= existence, Living= Lifestyle or way of life, Living= subsistence or how one supports themselves. Although we use these definitions separately, Jesus Christ is ALL of them, altogether for us. Our church is a living church that is our existence, our lifestyle and how we are supported. Jesus Christ is ALL.

When you started talking about the "tender but firm" voice of Jesus Christ, it reminded me of what I'm being taught in University of Maryland for teacher prep. It's the concept of being a "warm demander", by knowing your students and their struggles and strengths, then being able to use that position and knowledge to help them stretch, to do better and grow. The only way you can move into that position of warm demander as a teacher is to first have a relationship built on trust and respect. I love when I see the teachings of Jesus Christ mirrored in what I learn in other applications. Thank you for your beautiful lessons, they help me connect to the Savior and bring the scriptures to life.

Time stamp 49:50 was especially meaningful to me this week... my husband and I moved from UT after 28 years to Hawaii during the early stages of Covid in 2020. Being able to attend church or even meet anyone from our ward was impossible. We were invited by our neighbors and people we met through volunteer work to attend their churches. It was wonderful to see that we had Jesus Christ and his goodness as common ground. How many times do we thing that as LDS members, only WE have the “true” gospel... we have the fullness of the gospel and a living gospel led by living prophets. There is a LOT of truth out there and to be able to discuss it with so many faiths has been a special blessing for my husband and I. What a tender mercy to be taught this principle this year... to be reminded that His children are loved no matter what church they attend. As Latter-Day Saints, we have a great responsibility to be examples of a greater light that is available to ALL... wherever we live. Thank you for touching on this in this week’s study... can’t wait to be reminded of more of God’s goodness this year!

Verses 31 and 32 really stood out to me this week. Vs. 31 talks about how the Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance. Vs. 32 NEVERTHELESS, the Lord will forgive if you repent. That is such an important concept. We all sin and we are all lost, HOWEVER, NEVERTHELESS, we can repent and change and be acceptable to the Lord.

May you and your families be blessed with peace, with an increased ability to hear the voice of the Lord, and receive revelation with an enhanced capacity to feel how much our Father and His Son love you, care for you, and are ready to guide all who seek after Them. "That they might come to an understanding" Time 43:33.Everything in our society works against focusing on the characteristics that make us followers of Jesus Christ. We are inundated with constant streams of distractions vying for our hearts and our minds. All of us have to-do lists as long as our arm, schedules and responsibilities that keeps our minds constantly spinning. But as followers of Jesus Christ we are called to worship Him. In the scriptures sometimes I feel like I am standing in the shallows, other times I feel like I am standing in the deep clear waters of understanding. Getting to know Jesus Christ, sharing and making Him known to others, praying, tapping into personal revelation through the power of the Holy Ghost are foundational to gaining a broader understanding of Him. A greater understanding of His greatness, His Love, His justice, His mercy and His grace. In 2017 Elder Gary E. Stevenson gave a devotional address at BYU - "With all they getting, get understanding". He quoted Elder Robert D. Hales, then presiding Bishop of the Church who said, " “First, we start with the intelligence with which we were born. To our intelligence we add knowledge as we search for answers, study, and educate ourselves. To our knowledge we add experience, which should lead us to a level of wisdom. In addition to our wisdom, we add the help of the Holy Ghost through our prayers of faith, asking for spiritual guidance and strength. Then, and only then, do we reach an understanding in our hearts-which motivates us to ‘do what is right; "The feelings of an understanding heart give us the sweet spirit of assurance of not only knowing but doing what is right no matter what the circumstances. The understanding in our hearts comes from a close interdependence of study and prayer.”
@heatherrieman24564 жыл бұрын
As I listened to the explanation of the meaning of "true and living" my mind was turned to another meaning of "true". I wanted clarification of the concept I understood but I was having problems putting it into words. I found this definition in the Webster's 1828 dictionary: "Faithful; steady in adhering to friends, to promises, to a prince or to the state; loyal; not false, fickle or perfidious." I felt like it was in context like "true and faithful". Relating this to the Lord's church I feel that it includes His faithfulness in keeping His promises and covenants. He has made very specific promises to covenant Israel and we are part of that. We have been given specific priesthood ordinances and covenants which we must be faithful in receiving and living daily. I don't know if I am explaining myself well. I just feel like there is a dimension beyond "truth" and that dimension is being faithful to what the Lord has given us because He is faithful in blessing us for our efforts to be true to Him.

Greetings from 🇨🇦! My wife loved studying with you last year, so this year, I committed to joining in the fun! Loved this week! Looking forward to next week! We're blessed to be within a days driving distance of Palmyra. So blessed we were able to see the Pageant in its final season ❤️

I love the journal versions of the scriptures from Deseret Book, BUT..., I wish whoever put them together would make the pages bigger or the margins bigger. I take them to get spiral bound after buying them and alot of the words get cut off on the left of the page because there just isn't enough spacing. And also I would still love to see the board when you do the videos. The picture of the board that comes with the email is small and sometimes very blurry. I can see much better when I just pause the video and see the board. Thanks so much for all your hard work!!

I'm listening to this Dec 31, 2020- Guess what great day this is? It's Emily's Birthday! Happy Birthday Beautiful (INSIDE AND OUT) Emily Belle Freeman. I hope you have a wonderful day. I start my mornings out listening and studying the scriptures with you and David. This has truly helped me gain a better understanding of the Book of Mormon. I'm so excited to learn and understand more of the Doctrine and Covenants with you both. Thanks again for all you do to bring the scriptures to life...

I love you both and have watched since you first started. Helped me as a teacher. I must add to the numerous comments about the increasingly heavy-handed marketing; so off putting. Monetizing Sunday School with everything from manuals, stickers to music and posters feels very uncomfortable and incongruent with the later message.

D&C 1:14-16 is meant for members of the church. Who can stray from ordinances and who can break covenants except members of the church? Notice how it is punctuated: 14-16 is one thought with no periods. This aligns with your narrowing down analogy and it makes it even more narrow. He starts with all the inhabitants of the world, then he warns members of the church, then he starts to give some blessings (starting with version 17). But, as members, we often like to think that is does not apply to us, but it does - very specifically. At least that is how I read it.

This point was made abundantly clear by Elder Holland in the following discourse/address on the Lord's Preface. (this link was thankfully posted above rsc.byu.edu/sperry-symposium-classics-doctrine-covenants/lords-preface-dc-1) It is a very good read.

I’ve written down so many time stamps for this video, I’m just choosing one. 40:54 - you were referring to how God enters into your story. I love this for my teens, one in particular who doesn’t care much to hear His word since it doesn’t apply to her.

It would be nice if the marketing side was done separately from the lesson. Your enthusiasm and information are great. Perhaps a different youtube for the marketing. Thanks.

Emily, I would love to get your stand and poster holder to put on my kitchen table so everyone can see the word a week posters. Could you post a link to both in your newsletter? Thank you for all you guys do!💕 Also, as I've read through some of the comments of people critiquing yours & David's sharing of study helps, I want you to know that most people love, love, love EVERYTHING you guys share...including the study help products. It helps me want to dive into my scriptures even more, because it's more fun and much easier to do. I know your hearts, and it pains me to read about anything other than gratefulness for all you two are doing. People who can't appreciate that need to move onto another platform, instead of hurting the people who are trying to help them. Just want you to know you are loved and appreciated greatly, & that no one should try to dictate how you try to teach on your own platform. Keep up the great work!🥰

I'm so excited for this year's study with y'all! Thank you for your hard work and enthusiasm! Suggestion: can you start the 1st few seconds of the video standing beside, not in front, of the whiteboard? Just a few seconds.... That way, we can immediately pause the vid and copy down what is written on the board. That way, you won't have to remember to stand aside once you are under way in the discussion !

Emily.....when you ask the Lord "What's one thing you need me to do today?" are you waiting after you are finished with your prayer to sit and listen for your answer or do you get your answer as you go through your day?
@mslade2424 жыл бұрын
For me, I've experienced both. I have taken a few seconds to sit quietly in my prayer to see if anything comes - sometimes a name of someone I can pray for comes to mind in that moment & I can accomplish that "errand" right then. Other times I wait a little while after I close my prayer to listen for guidance. But many times I forget to take the time to try either of those methods, or I do but nothing comes in those moments, so I go about my day, trusting that the Lord will give me ideas and inspiration as He needs, in His timing. I have had days in which people seem to come out of the woodwork with simple easy requests (ie, Can you pick up my child from the school when you get yours?" "Do you have an egg I can borrow?" "Do you have a suggestion for such & such?") Then at the end of the day, when I'm praying again, it's only then that I realize the Lord had a hand in each of those simple requests, blessing me with opportunities to serve that were completely within my capacity to fulfill. Those days are awesome! 🙂 I hope that helps.

Love all these comments. Just to add - Japanese characters (kanji) ALL originated from China. The words even means it: 'kan' - Translation from Han, as in Han people in China from the Han Dynasty; 'ji' - this literally means "characters". It is a little nerve-racking for most who know, to hear all these Chinese characters to be called Japanese, haha. They are the characters Japan uses, but they are definitely of Chinese origin and still are used in China today, so therefore still Chinese :) Thank you for sharing these lessons with everyone! I have the daily journal and am loving this great start !!!

You have put a lot of work to make this live for people. Thank you. For myself, I watch the video presentation each week as well as Book of Mormon Centrals presentation. Then I like to direct my own study as I feel prompted. It probably works for a lot of people but all the gimmicky study items you present seem constraining. I like the insights but not so much being structured that way.
