This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying sections 23-26 of the Doctrine and Covenants. This is a group of sections meant to strengthen and encourage the Saints. On this field trip we will visit Emma’s baptismal site, the Hales home and Joseph and Emma’s first home. We are filming from Harmony, Pennsylvania. You will want to make sure you visit The Nashville Tribute Band website to listen to Emma’s song and music video. It is one of our most favorite of the whole year!! Thanks to Izzy Johnson for the most beautiful and touching rendition of this song you have ever heard. We will post it on our take ten on Instagram this Saturday.
Here is what you have to look forward to this week:
What matters.
What Doesn’t Matter.
What to do.
What not to do.
We love studying with you,
David and Emily

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Thank you, I am 82 years old and a former Baptist minister and the son of a former Baptist minister, we along with our families joined the Restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I along with my father had been taught evil against the Mormon Church. The Holy Spirit spoke to me when I was preaching a sermon in the Baptist church and said "How do you know that is true" when I said something against the Book of Mormon. It startled me as it shot in my mind as I was preaching. I had not read the Book of Mormon, so I contacted the missionaries and took the discussions. I prayed about it, my wife also who opposed me even talking to Mormon. I told her to change the way she was praying and she did. She rushed out of the bedroom and said "I was praying and asked God if it was true, a light suddenly appeared in the room and a voice said to me" "Your husband is seeking to serve God, Follow Him." We both knew it was true, she was immediately converted and asked to be baptised, which I did the following Saturday. My Father said I had gone astray. I asked him if he had read the Book of Mormon, no, you have not. Read it please, he and my mother came later and said that they know the Book of Mormon is true and asked to be Baptised which I did the next week. My dad, served as a Bishop and later he and my mother served a full time senior mission to Bath New York, we lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My wife served many teaching callings including Relief Society President, I served in the Bishopric and the High Counsel. I am currently the Ward organist in Largo, Florida. For 50 years I have studied the Book of Mormon and I know the Church is true and Joseph Smith, Jr. is the prophet of the Restoration. Jesus Christ is coming soon. God bless you all.

I love Emma Smith. I can hardly wait to embrace her and to thank her for her sacrifices. I have only buried one baby, and one was enough. I was blessed to have six living children, but had many miscarriages. My husband was gone a lot in his callings, and she was my example on how to support him. I am no longer with my husband, and going on seemed like an impossibility, but I did it for my kids, for the blessings of the gospel. Many people may speak ill of Emma, but she truly was am elect lady. Her list of blessings is awesome! Thank you for this weeks lesson. The song at the end was a perfect way to end. The spirit was very strong. Thank you all for sharing your talents with us.

Well cried all the way thru this lesson. Emma is my hero. I have always studied about her. The song at the end was so beautiful and the sister missionary did an awesome job. I sing and if you do it right you feel the spirit and at times it gets to you so you can't finish it like you would want to. But it was perfect. Emma would be so touched and honored ....Great job! Wonderful lesson!!! Thank you!!

Thank you for going to the Joseph Knight Sr. farm and explaining the impact the Colesville branch had on the Church in those early years. My wife and I served as missionaries providing tours in 2019 and telling the stories of these Saints. There is a sacred spirit at the Knight farm because of the sacrifice and service of the Knights and the modern-day sacrifice of those that have restored the home.

Thank you so much for this lesson! I have been thinking about Emma a lot over the past few weeks. I recently found out that she and I are second cousins once removed! I really admire her strength and courage. Over a decade ago, I wrote in my journal about how she is my role model, and how I want to be like her. I had no idea at the time that we share a few generations of grandparents! The stories about Emma have taken on a deeper meaning for me, and I am looking forward to meeting her someday.

Great lesson and love being able to see the homes and surroundings where these events took place. Emma is a special woman and a great example as a leader in the church, with humble devotion during hard times. Thank you for another wonderful reminder of the context of the times and the struggles they were facing as a new church with so much persecution going on around them. And their faith and efforts to move forward despite the overwhelming challenges.

I received my witness that Emma is an elect lady the first time I listened to this song also. This song touched me deeply, and I know that she is revered. How can someone go through so much and people not hold her up with reverence. Just like with all of the leadership positions in the LDS chruch (bishops, stake presidents, apostles and prophets..........etc...), these servants of God would have a more difficult time serving the Lord without honorable, elect ladies at their sides to support them.

@Catherine Beaumont. I agree. As a woman in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and as a daughter of God, I know my worth and I don’t feel slighted when my male counterparts in the church carry on different roles and responsibilities than I do. I never feel “less than” compared to a man in this church. I even sometimes feel women are put on a pedestal in this church! I love the divine role of women and I love discovering more and more of what that looks like for me as a wife, mother, sister, and friend❤️ This has been my perspective and I’m grateful for it. I think Emily Freeman has a habit of saying “we” a lot and I’m sure if she was reading our comments she would understand where we are coming from and could probably expound her side. Love these two!❤️ but yeah, I agree with you, Catherine. Glad you and I are on the same page👏

25:9 - I don't read this like "Joseph, you better be supportive of Emma". I thought it was connected to 24:3&9, where it basically says Joseph isn't going to be much of a temporal/financial provider, but that he/they will be supported by the church. I'm guessing Emma was super-concerned about how Joseph would be able to provide for her and their family if he had so many church responsibilities.

Bruce R McConkie taught that "The Lord never sends apostles and prophets and righteous men to minister to his people without placing women of like spiritual stature at their sides." ("The Book of Abraham" The Pearl of Great Price Student Manual (2000) p. 28-41 I love that! Certainly it applies to Emma Smith! Also if you just Google "Emma Hale Smith's Last Blessing" it brings up this blessing. And a great article to read about her is ""My Great-Great Grandmother, Emma Hale Smith" by Gracia N Jones in the August 1992 ENSIGN. It is really good.

According to Lisa Tait (on the Follow Him podcast), an “exhorter” in the Methodist church at the time was a lay person called to preach the gospel. This is probably what the Lord meant by exhort-simply, to preach and teach.

In David J. Ridges gospel study series, he says as Emma passed away, "Her last words, as recalled by her son Alexander, were 'Joseph, Joseph, Joseph.'" "Joseph Smith III reported her last words as 'Joseph! Yes, yes, I'm coming!'" (See Zion's Ensign, December 31, 1903.) Aligns with Emily and David's feelings about this elect lady. ♥️

Can someone clarify for me? Emma's Timeline shows her moving to Fayette in 1829 and again in 1880, but it doesn't show any other moves. She had to move away from Fayette in order to move there a second time. When did she move and where to?

As far as I know, Emma and Joseph lived for a few years (1827-1830ish-I think) on a homestead a few miles from her parents house on property that Joseph bought from Emma’s Dad. They stayed there until persecution was too great.
