Help! I have a question from this video. Is this why when a read scripture that I've read before, I feel like. (All below is how my thought process is in these situations) Ok that's not what this scripture said before. Are the scriptures changing? Because I know when I read this before it was difficult and literally didn't make sense but this time, it's as simple as simple could be. This isn't something I wouldn't have understood. So why did it seem like some impossible text then but today, it's simple?

Thank you for the reminder that discovering truth takes effort - that we have to do more than listen to your insights (and read other commentary), we have to spend time in the scriptures, pondering them! But hearing your insights gets the ball rolling, lets the thoughts start flowing about how to approach even just one verse of Isaiah's poetry. Thank you for doing these videos!!

Yay Sam!!! Wow...one day removed from being perfect! Well, you only promised to desire perfection through the merits of Jesus Christ's Atonement. CHOOSE joy and rejoicing each and every day. The adversary will endeavor to use the same traps that may have been stumbling blocks for you in the past...DO NOT kick the "keystone" to the curb. The Book of Mormon will provide you a daily rescue, if you follow the admonitions of good King Benjamin in the latter half of verse 9 of chapter 2 of the Book of Mosiah - to open your ears - that you may hear, and you heart - that you may understand, and your mind - that the mysteries of God may be unfolded to your view. Keep searching!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Please pass my comments onto these great teachers. Every time I read Isaiah, I understand his prophesies a little better (last time, I learned that the chapter headings were my good friends), but after watching this video I can sincerely say I LOVE Isaiah! My mind was blown. You gave me keys to my understanding that I never had before. I am so, so impressed that Isaiah could be talking about multiple events at the same time. It reminded me how we often can talk about Jesus Christ’s appearance to the Nephites and the Second Coming and the Millennium in the same breath at church and not be confused. It makes total sense to us. What Isaiah was saying (prophesying of multiple events at once), must have similarly obviously made sense to him and the people of his date and time. Wow!! Isaiah is amazing! Wow!! And, that’s just one of the major connections I made. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I never thought I’d say I love Isaiah. I am indebted to you!

I am so grateful for these lessons. Isaiah is so frustrating for me. I really appreciate you walking us through the symbolism in 2 Ne. 12:18-20. I would not have thought to consider any of that symbolic. Now it reminds me of dissecting Shakespeare, King Lear and all the birds come to mind. If I can learn Shakespeare, maybe I can learn to do this too. Tyler and Taylor, thank you for sharing your talents. This lesson has helped me tie everything as one. Why we need to know history, geography, poetry, the animal kingdom ect... All things truly testify of Jesus Christ. Your teaching model is similar to what I learned at BYUI. As a math tudor we couldn't use a pencil to help the students. We asked questions to help the students to produce the answers. If we as students don't produce the answer we won't remember the answer. Work we must, but lunch is free. I appreciate the tools and examples you gave. The Holy Ghost prompts us with questions so we will search for the answer.s Pondering and being still really does help us to know God. In Come Follow Me, the chapter on Conversion says if we have the Holy Ghost as a our constant companion we are worthy to be in the presence of the Father and the Son. I love how you tied the sacrament in to the last part of the lesson. If all Joseph Smith gave us was the sacrament prayers I would and do know he is a prophet of God.

@@taylorhalverson3052 I had never been taught about the Greek/literal approach vs. Hebrew Poet approach better than in your lesson. I picked up this time in BofM, that Isaiah states he has been given the refined, gifted ability to speak (vs. Moses) and the double repetition of the statements are truly beautiful and poetic. I also realized how often Isaiah is speaking both to his present-day people and our day, thus, one of the layering of meanings. I never realized before, how much Isaiah embodies the mission and role of Christ better than any other ancient prophet. I am nearly 70, and still picking up amazing meanings in the symbolism in the temple initiatory ordinances and endowment as well.

I love reading Yeshayahu (Isaiah’s real name). Significant portions of the Isaiah’s 66 chapters are fused in the Book of Mormon, and the golden rule applies in biblical hermetics, including between Isaiah and BoM... 1) establish content (what is actually being said to whom, by whom, for whom?); 2) understand the context (in Hebrew schema and construct, delineate between then and now [and twin] prophetic timelines); 3) look for continuity of message (how is it all connected [Isaiah and BoM] and what was the “then” application, and the “now and future” application for each respective generation and audience). These two guys do a reasonable job, explaining the core basics as fellow academics. As a reference point, Isaiah’s 66 chapters are not as hard as you think to grasp (if you build a good grounding in Hebrew liturgy, historical events, Hebrew PaRDeS systems, and understand other Old Testament prophets work). Isaiah’s first 34 chapters cover a significant message of warnings and judgements on nations; chapters 35-39 offers interlude text on Israel, while Chapters 40-53 are increasingly Messianic focused, and 54-66 cover the eventual realisation of a future restoration and day of the Lord (Isaiah 63). A more detailed breakdown in Isaiah to contrast with BoM includes: 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝟏 - 𝟑𝟓 1-6 Judah [6: King on the Throne] 7-12 Israel 13-23 Nations: Babylon, Philistia, Moab, Syria, Egypt, Edom, Arabia, Tyre 24-27 World: “Day of YHVH” (Called, the “Little Apocalypse”) 28-33 Six “Woes” upon Jerusalem 34-35 Tribulation & Millennium 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐈 (𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥: 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲) (𝐂𝐟. 𝟐 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝟏𝟖:𝟏𝟑-𝟐𝟎:𝟏𝟗 [𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐚𝐡?]; 𝟐 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝟑𝟐) 36 Hezekiah’s Trouble: Assyrian invasion threat 37 Hezekiah’s Prayer 38 Hezekiah’s Illness 39 Hezekiah’s Folly 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐈𝐈 40-48 The Purpose of Peace 48:22 “There is no peace, saith YHVH, to the Wicked.” 49-57 The Prince of Peace Ch 53 Yeshua Ha;Mashiach (aka Jesus Christ) right in the middle. The “Holy of Holies” of OT 58-66 The Program of Peace 57:21 “There is no peace, saith YHVH, to the Wicked.” 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 6 Vision of the Throne of God (Cf. Ezek 10, Rev 4) 7 Virgin Birth 9 Messianic revelation 14 Lucifer’s Rebellion 19 Great Pyramid allusion? 40 John the Baptist announced and Joseph Smith in BoM (twin meaning) 53 Suffering and death of the Messiah 61 Quoted by Christ as His mandate 65, 66 Millennium and beyond NB* In several chapters the BoM adds additional context and comparative understanding such as Joseph Smith, whereas Isaiah also has Yohanacan Ben Zacharia (aka John the Baptist) in mind. Scripture can have multiple applications and reference points. Finally, don’t buy into any of the rubbish from academics about Deutero and tri-Isaiah theory’s. There was one Isaiah (writer), and no more than one.

@@taylorhalverson3052 I like what you folks are doing here, so thank you for taking the time to educate. You two are the most insightful and accurate I've seen on CfM KZbin teachings. Helping members understand the Hebrew mindset is part of unlocking hidden micro, macro, and meta codings burred deep in scripture. Traditional belief says Torah verses have 70 deeper levels of meaning, and I would argue all of Tanakh conforms as well. The Shema is the bedrock of Hebrew life, and the key to having the Ruach Ha'Kodosh (Holy Spirit) as our personal Liahona. Building meaningful study, pondering, prayer and fasting is central to tuning into YeHoVaH's word. With the above levels of meaning decoded by the Spirit in mind, a simple suggestion would be to take 5 mins to explain to the audience the concepts of Hebrew PaRDeS (Peshat, Remez, Derash, and Sod). This is wholly different to Greek language, but both additionally have forms of Gematria (number meanings to respective alphabets). Another interesting area that has real novel connectivity is the study of Paleo-Hebrew and Proto-Hebrew as a decoded language. There are some fantastic studies emerging that validate central gospel narratives dating back to the times of Moshe. BTW, I like Book of Mormon Central, and would gladly contribute.

Can you explain more about how Nephi knew the Greek name, Jesus Christ? And why he used it?
@taylorhalverson30525 жыл бұрын
Great question, Lisa. 2 Nephi 10:3 says this "Wherefore, as I [Jacob] said unto you, it must needs be expedient that Christ-for in the last night the angel spake unto me that this should be his name". So God revealed the name to Jacob and Nephi. After that time in the Book of Mormon, they start using the name/title that we are more familiar with "Jesus Christ" and less the name/title they were familiar with from their Hebrew / Old Testament world of "Messiah" or "Holy One of Israel." Thanks for asking the same question that I had. I found Brother Halverson's additional comments really enlightening! It's as though it signals a shift from the Old Testament to the New Testament - Hebrew to Greek; Law of Moses to the Advent of Christ. I can't imagine a hick from rural New York coming up with this on his own!

My husband and I are learning a great deal from your thoughtful, insightful presentation each week. I've been impressed by the artwork you're using throughout your videos. Is there some where I could find out who the artists are? Many are pieces I've never seen before. Thank you!

Thank you for your help. I think one of the reasons Nephi says we can understand Isaiah in the latter days is because of insights from you as well as other scholars. However . . . I can't find your lesson for 2 Nephi 26-30.

HI David, Yes, Isaiah 6:10 (2 Nephi 16:10) is a little confusing. What God is saying is that because the people have been so covenantally unfaithful they will fully reap the harvest of their unfaithfulness. God is bringing justice because the people had for so long rejected His mercy. God is essentially saying to Isaiah, "Don't get in the way of my justice." And Isaiah asks "How long will you be in justice mode?" And God responds with verses 12-13 explaining that He will bring destruction but saving 10% to start over with again. You can imagine that this would have been relevant to the Nephites who struggled many times to be faithful to God and suffered the consequences, but then God would save a portion of them to try again. God did so over many generations until they were fully ripe in iniquity when He removed them from off the land. Hope that helps!

My sister says that 2Ne 12:9 says we don't have to forgive. I say she just doesn't want to forgive her ex-husbands. But I don't know how to explain what this verse is really saying. Can you help?
@taylorhalverson30524 жыл бұрын
great question Nadine. Sometimes Isaiah can be hard to understand. To be clear, Isaiah is NOT teaching us NOT to forgive. Instead, Isaiah is describing how God will NOT forgive those who do NOT repent. If you start in 2 Nephi 12:6, you see that Isaiah begins by saying "Therefore, O Lord, thou hast forsaken thy people, the house of Jacob, BECAUSE...." Hope that helps!

Nephi and Jacob saw Isaiah as a true seer. All Seer’s have the perspective of seeing through Prophetic Type of Lenses. Isaiah certainly saw through his unique eyes as evidenced by the 2 “I’s” in his name (Isaiah) !! SO OBVIOUSLY, THE EYES HAVE IT !!

no where in the scriptures does it say, read the scriptures, it says learn of. liken, search, treasure up, embrace, feast upon, etc. When we do this the scriptures become easier to understand.

So, when one makes the statement "it's all Greek to me", it should infer that the meaning could NOT be more clear? I don't get it...it's all Hebrew to me.
