I have had the impression during my study this week that the Israelites, as small nation states, felt insignificant in the world. Having a King would raise their prestige and importance. How many of us, today, want the world to see us as important and significant, when it is really our standing with the Lord that matters. Worldly "glory" is so tempting, though...

Thank you for bringing these verses to life. God save the king...God save us! Fabulous. Makes my mind explode with thoughts. I'll share one. In many ancient cultures, the worst criminals were set upon a donkey and had to ride through the city while the citizens derided him. With your explanations, we think of scape goats and the one that is anointed to be sacrificed. God save us; take our sins upon you. So on Palm Sunday, Christ took this commission that had to come from the people, and went to the temple. The people had to sustain Him to give the commission. Later they would deride Him and call for His sacrifice while the scape goat, Barabbas was released into the wilderness. The people cried out to Pilate to put the sin of the sacrifice upon them and their children. Palm Sunday prepared Him to carry His people through the high ordinances of the temple that He accomplished that week... The Lord's supper, Gethsemane, the cross and resurrection. He paid for the sins laid upon Him symbolically on Palm Sunday that represents all mankind. The gospel is breathtaking. You don't teach random pieces of the gospel, you fit things into the pattern of salvation.

Saul's downfall ..in the first instance, Saul feared the enemy more than the Lord. In the second instance, he wanted the people's approval more tha the Lord's. In both instances, he acted in pride. Thanks for highlighting the author's intent to show the fallibility of human leadership. I found it especially interesting the part where Saul tries to get rid of David by offering him worldly honor (marriage to his daughter) so he'll have to go to the Battlefront where he might die. An interesting preview to the next part of the story 😁

David's faith was strengthened by the incident with the lion and the bear to prepare him fo Goliath. But I also think it's not a coincidence that it happened to be a lamb being delivered from a Lion and a bear. Very interesting symbolism there. Just like the symbolism with Samson and the lion and beehive.

32:00 Tangent: Looking from a Navy perspective before RADAR, he was fast and had a long range weapon so that he could attack from beyond the range of Goliath's weapons. Don't get injured enough to slow down. Mustn't be surprised by an opponent coming out of the nearby fog or being too close when you see it at dawn.

Regarding the sword of Goliath and the sword of Laban. I had some questions pop up while on my mission about the sword of Laban. What was so special about that particular sword? Why didn't it rust? Why did Nephi hang onto it and pass it down? Why did Moroni include it with the gold plates, etc? My mission President was unable to offer any suggestions, and so I set out on a quest to find more. This was in the days before the internet, and so information was slow coming, but I have since read a great deal on the subject. I read a paper by Brett Holbrook that compares it to the sword of Goliath. There are a lot of interesting parallels. This isn't the only thing I have read where the two are compared, and where the author even wonders if the two swords are the same, David keeping the sword of Goliath as part of the royal regalia, and it being passed down to Laban along with the records of the Jews. I had considered the idea that the sword of Laban might represent the authority to shed blood in the cause of righteousness. That without it, being wielded by a prophet of God, the people of God are not to shed blood, but to allow their blood to be shed. "President Brigham Young also reported that the Prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery saw the sword of Laban when they entered a cave in the hill Cumorah with a large room containing many plates. "The first time they went there the sword of Laban hung upon the wall; but when they went again it had been taken down and laid upon the table across the gold plates; it was unsheathed, and on it was written these words: "This sword will never be sheathed again until The Kingdoms of this world become the Kingdom of our God and his Christ"' (JD 19:38). This leads me to give credence, not only to the idea that the sword is part of a royal regalia, but also that the need to shed blood in defense of righteousness will cease once God's Kingdom is established.

A second hand account has Martin Harris saying that the Sword of Laban was from Joseph of Egypt. An heirloom passed down through the rulers of Ephraim down to Laban. And that Laban was an Ephraimite who also had the Brass Plates written in Egyptian, also from Joseph. Also, the same sword could possibly be the one used by Joshua against the Amalekites (you know what I think about that name and the book of Mormon) and the Canaanites in the Promised Land.
@caguas972 жыл бұрын
@@CwicShow I could see that being the case. If the sword of Goliath and the Sword of Laban are one and the same, it is possible that it came into the hands of the Philistines at the same time that they stole the Ark of the Covenant. And though they returned the Ark, Goliath may have held onto the sword. It may also play into why they Israelites refused to go up against the Philistines... if Goliath held the one thing that symbolized God's authority to shed blood for righteousness' sake, then they would truly be going up against an unbeatable foe. Here's a link to the paper I mentioned: scholarsarchive.byu.edu/jbms/vol2/iss1/4/

Great comment. I was thinking just the other day how cool it would be to get to see some of these things. Or if there one day was a museum which had these on display , the breast plate which held the urim and thunim , the urim and thunim, the sword of Labin , the title of liberty, and of course the gold,brass plates . Moses and Aaron's staff's. The holy grail, the liahona . Etc.

Interesting that Saul and David both have the Spirit of the Lord to be with them after they are "annointed" and Saul loses that spirit after he loses the annointing.

Interesting parallel between the Israelites asking for a king here and asking for Moses to speak for them with the Lord at Sinai. In both instances, the people want to give up their personal responsibility onto a revered leader.

I think the Amalekites in the BoM are descendants of the Amalekites in the Bible. Researchers like Rod Meldrum speculate that Amalekites might’ve been passengers on a Phoenician ship Mulek was on, along with Greeks. If that is true, then that might explain the Greek names in the BoM, unless Joseph Smith used Greek as a translation for whatever was on the plates. Ever considered interviewing Meldrum, Hannah Stoddard, LDS scientist Dean Sessions? Sunday eve - June 26, 2022.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I would disagree with this. We are told that some of the dissenters with the word root AMLK are direct descendants of Nephi.

@@CwicShow not a problem. I think I misquoted Meldrum. I don’t think he said anything about Amalekites boarding the same ship as Mulek. I got things mixed up. Anyway, I have been wondering about the origins of the BoM Amalekites. Could you tell where I can read about them being direct descendants of Nephites?

The Amalikites were the people of Esau . The twin brother of Isreal . So sorry to yell you this bur Samuel was a false prophet. And yes I am Lds . So read Ezekiel 18 kjv vs 4 and vs 20 . It says the sins of the father are not on the son. Dose this not sound like our 2 article of faith ? Now guess what Isreal as soon as they got out of Egypt they invaded their cousins land and attacked their cousins Esaus people the Amalikites. Then they cheated used magic to beat the Amalikites and then occupied their lands over a year . So then 300 years later the evil fake prophet Samuel tells Saul that God wants him to kill geneside Esau people the Amalikites even the babies that are suckling . Dose this sound like Jesus/Jahova? How nice of israel to steal his brothers birthright and his blessing then lie to the Amalikites that they don't have to bear the sins of the fater bit later genocide them 300 years later . Try harder your reading the bibel wrong . So when Babylon destroyed Isreal and takes them as slaves guess who burns the temple? It was Edom they were the other wife of Esau people. Isreal got what they deserved. Prove me wrong . A quick Google of who were the Amalikites or who were the people of amek . Its Esaus people. Samuel and David were evil

Open question: Greg, I know you know this but probably want to keep woke out of CFM (although I believe it's been lightly baked in). The reason the people want kings is that they've become irresponsible and wicked. They want kings for the same reason Karl Marx down to Ibram Kendy wants them. Collective salvation.
