I had the experience in my mission, only once, that the spirit guided me to take a copy of the Book of Mormon away from a person. Each time someone expressed no interest, and refused further discussions, we left the book with them, because you never know when the book itself might become an instrument of future conversion. In this case, there was this man who asked: "If I prayed, and God told me this book was true, would I have to become Mormon?" We explained to him that, like anyone else, he'd have a choice, but we believed that if God himself told him that what we were showing him was the right way, a believer, like him, would want to follow it. He placed the book down and said, "Then I dont want to ask." It turned out that his dream was becoming a pastor, and he had learned that our ministers, including the missionaries, were not paid. I don't remember the exact words of the exchange at this point, but I remember we confirmed what he had just said, stating something to the effect of "you're telling us that if God himself, told you that this was the way, you'd still want to go a different way?" He said yes. We kindly asked for the Book of Mormon back, and kindly told him that if he ever changed his mind, that he could always hail us, or other missionaries like us, and we'd happily share the gospel with him. When walking out, my companion and I spoke about it, because it was not the usual practice to take the book back, but we agreed that it was for the better (actually for the lesser condemnation of this young man) All this to say that yes, there are times when it is not the will of God for someone to receive "these things."
