Have you ever wondered why the story of Adam and Eve is so important to our understanding? Why is it given so much attention? Why do we keep retelling it? As we walk through the story this week, we want you to look particularly for where you see Jesus in the story. This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying Genesis 3-4; Moses 4-5. Here is what you have to look forward to:

My take on blaming is a little different. Could it be that Eve recognized the need for the fruit of good and evil, understanding the Father's instruction to 'Go and replenish the earth.' To have seed. She was courageous and partook that 'man might be'. Knowing Father's will, she knew Adam must go with her. Adam 'sees that this must be so' and courageously eats of the fruit to also obey the Father's will that they stay together. Their statements in Moses 4:18-19 were not to avoid their responsibility by blaming the other, but to take responsibility for their own decisions to follow the Father's will and usher in mortality, increase. If, we read their words with love for each other and love for Father, there is not a blaming tone in their meaning, no criticism or avoidance. Anyone else with me on this? Maybe a better fill in the blank for v:18-19, would be Explain, explain their willingness to be Mortal, that man might be.

My first grade daughter went to school this week and fell into a puddle. She had mud on her clothes and shoes. When it came time to come home, she was nervous and afraid her Mom would be upset with her for getting her clothes dirty. She finally walked out to the car to face her Mom, and was surprised when her Mom wasn’t upset at all, but just wanted to give her a big hug and help her clean her clothes. The clothes and shoes were washed and she felt how much her Mom loved her and wanted to help her. Through this experience, I felt a small portion of how Heavenly Father felt about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when they partook of the fruit of the TOKOGAE. Heavenly Father wants to give us a big hug and help us become clean when we fall into the puddles of life. Learned so much from this. Thank you!

Thank you for all your insights and thoughts. One impression I had while listening today was that Adam and Eve were not blaming each other or the serpent when talking to God after partaking of the fruit. Adam was factual in saying Eve gave him the fruit but then he ended by saying - I did eat. Eve did the same. I feel this is a great example of taking responsibility for and owning our mistakes before the Lord. There is so much we can learn from our first parents.

But today I learned things that opened my eyes to the Plan of Salvation in a way that has made it so clear in my mind why we are here. Wow! I feel like I've just been to the temple or on the Mount Sinai. These truths are beautiful and holy. I add my testimony to yours that Our Father in Heaven wants us to succeed and has given us all the tools to do so. All we need to do is decide we want to and then follow Him. 💕

I fell in love with the Bible when Our Prophet Gordon B Hinkley at the time asked us as a church read the Book of Mormon, that was powerful, so I kicked into high gear and moved on to the Bible, it was a “Time” of learning and refreshing! So powerful were my impressions of the spirit that I could feel my “fellowship” with the Old Testament and prior with the Book of Mormon! I truly feel that very “fellowship “ in both of You! I had a thought when you were talking about the flaming sword guarding the way to the Tree of Life. If you think about Lehi’s vision of the tree we know the iron rod is what protects the people along the path to the Tree of Life and the iron rod is a symbol for the word of God. So perhaps the flaming sword represents the scriptures (made readily available to us “in all directions) which contain the word of God and by clinging to His words we are protected along the way back to Him. It also mentions in the scriptures that God’s word is powerful and sharper than a two-edge sword.

In Moses 4:22, God tell Eve: “thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” I have always struggled with this, but a mythopoetic explanation that I found helped me understand it! What I read is, this represents the power struggle that can happen in a marriage in mortality- her desires are to [rule] over him, and he is want to have power over her. It’s not saying that man is supposed to rule over woman, but represents this power struggle that can happen in marriages, in our mortal state. We are to overcome this and work as equal partners, in love and grace. With God’s help!

I loved this episode. One of the best I think. God's plan is so perfect and makes so much sense and is so merciful when I am "the child" in the story, but as a parent of young adult children, it's sometime painful and scary to watch them use their agency thru trial and error and it takes such great faith to trust in the Plan and remember that agency is the greatest gift ever. God's example as a parent of us is a great reminder for me of how to parent as well.

Love this! Now, every day when getting dressed, I will remember what Adam and Eve learned. I am a child of God who loves me. He didn’t just kick me out of the garden. That was my choice. Rather, He covered me (to protect and atone) with a coat of skins that He made Himself and that sent His son so that I could journey through mortality with Him (covering my sins as I learn from my mistakes and make course corrections-repent). So powerful! Thank you.

I am grateful for the account of how Heavenly Father works with his children when they sin. What we don’t see in the account is an angry God coming down and yelling at them or hurting them or telling them that they’re worthless and how disappointed he is in them. No, he comes down and encourages them to come forth and explain what happened. Now God already knows what’s happened, but he gives them the chance to confess. That’s what God wants us to do when we sin. Yes, he already knows what we’ve done, but he wants to give us the chance to take responsibility for our actions and unburden ourselves of their weight. He knows that confession is liberating to the soul and healing. So he says to us, “Don’t hide your sins from me. Don’t let your past actions eat away at your peace of mind. Don’t believe Satan’s lie that you’re not worthy of my love and help. Just come forth. If you hide from me, I can’t help you. Let’s talk about this and get it resolved”. And that’s what happens with Adam and Eve. They do come forward and confess. Some wonder if verses 18-19 are an example of the blame game or passing the buck. Adam blames Eve and Eve blames the serpent. But I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. Adam and Eve are simply explaining what happened. They explain to Heavenly Father why they ate the fruit. “She gave me the fruit and I (personally responsibility) ate it. Not, “She made me do it!” Eve rightly explains that Satan tricked her, and she too says, “I did eat”. So there’s no rationalization here. Adam and Eve own up completely to their actions. I love what Heavenly Father does for Adam & Eve after - explaining that the temporary & probably uncomfortable covering of fig leaves they chose wasn’t going to bring any significant or long term relief from their predicament. We don’t do a very good job of covering our own sins. So what does God say? He says, “I will give you a better covering for your sins. Something that is eternal & lasts. Something more comfortable. Something of my making.” And he gives them coats of skins to wear. The Atonement- Such a loving Father! I think of the Temple Covenants & our Temple Garments that we wear that remind Us of what David mentioned of wearing a daily reminder of Grace, love & promise - the covenants we make in the Temple & Gods promises! I❤️🦘❤️

I loved this lesson! Thank you for all your insights that you share. I had a thought while reading the assigned reading yesterday…isn’t it interesting that God didn’t forbid the tree of life? I personally think that God forbid the tree of knowledge because he knew Satan would want to tempt Adam and Eve to disobey God. So he forbid the one that would actually fulfill his plan for mankind, because Satan knew not the mind of God! It wasn’t until after they partook that the tree of life was protected to prevent them from eating of that tree and living forever in their sins.

What came to my mind as you describe the "mess" we're in... WE ARE ALL THE PRODIGAL SONS & DAUGHTERS OF A LOVING FATHER Who is waiting for us to return to His presence, return to our Celestial Homes! in my opinion, or is it just me that sees it that way? (Oddly that parable doesn't mention the mother in that scenario but as a mother myself, i know how joyful i would be for my children to return home) Thank you so much for helping my mind expand with knowledge with all your episodes. I love the idea that like the creation, Adam and Eve is a process too. Like a baby, they came to Eden to learn and grown about tending a garden before choosing when to leave and go out into the world. God didn’t throw them in the deep end (create them in the difficult world we live in). He created them in Eden. They went into the world when they were ready. The first choice. The first example of exercising agency. It helps me to understand god’s character as someone who wants us to succeed and who gives a little at a time. We choose when to progress. In Gen. 3:11, I thought and looked into the phrase “thou shouldest not eat”. Looking at the Hebrew, could we see it as “thou need without consume”. So they didn’t need to consume it. The choice was when to begin on their path to mortality. And love the show. Thank you for taking the time to put together such a rich and beautiful look at the scriptures.

I live close enough, so I went to Pioneer Party to have the timeline printed and laminated. They were so helpful and quick. I even stopped at the Lehi Country Bakery a couple of shops down the street to get one of their famous square doughnuts. That was my first time and it was delicious!

I was also thinking after this lesson that partaking of the forbidden fruit parallels the gate to the straight and narrow path. One opens the way for Adam and Eve to follow the path to mortality. The other opens the way to the straight and narrow path to return to Christ. Beautiful opposites. The fruit in a garden of dirt, leading to death, expelling them from Eden. The gate of baptism of water, leading to rebirth, acceptance into God’s saints.

Thank you so much! I have NEVER thought about the story of Adam and Eve the way you pictured it! I love it so much! It will make my temple experience so much more rich and wonderful!

Another example of God’s love: “When Adam and Eve were placed on the earth, they were not mortal, like unto us. God did not make a mortal being. It would be contrary to his great goodness to make a man mortal, subject to pain, subject to sickness, subject to death. When He made this creation, and when He made these two intelligent beings and placed them upon this creation, He made them after His own likeness and His own image. He did not make them mortal, He made them immortal, like unto himself. If He had made them mortal, and subject to pain, there would have been some cause, among intelligent beings, to say that the Lord subjected man, without a cause, to affliction, sorrows, death and mortality. But He could not do this; it was contrary to the nature of His attributes, contrary to the nature of that infinite goodness which dwells in the bosom of the Father and the Son, to make a being subject to any kind of pain” [Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses 21:289]. Therefore, God the Father could not instruct them to partake, they had to choose it on their own in order for God’s plan to succeed.

Partaking of the fruit was not a mistake...many prophets have stated that Eve (and then Adam) did exactly what they were supposed to do. Partaking of the fruit just opened up a Mortal experience for all of God's

I had this thought too. I’m wondering if when they were talking about mistakes, they were referring to Adam and Eve then hiding from God and blaming God and each other AFTER they partook of the fruit as the mistake, not the actual eating of the fruit.

While listening, I had the thought come to me that it is not part of God's plan for us to be perfect. Many times we are struggling to reach for perfection. We cannot become perfect on our own or in this lifetime. If he wanted us all to be perfect, we wouldn't have agency and he would have chosen Satan's plan. That is the beauty of the plan of salvation with our agency. It is through christ that we can reach perfection.

When Adam says in the flesh I shall see God, he is telling us that we can too, we can SEE Jesus while in the flesh. Of course it also means we see his works and power in our lives, but we can also SEE HIM .

37:20 Ever since observing some of the acting in the most recent temple videos, I don't see a blame game there anymore. Rather, I see simple statements of fact as they stand by each other, admitting their transgression and stating the reason/influence that led to that choice. The serpent wasn't fully honest with Eve, yet she saw through it and took the risk in order to fulfill all the commandments, and Adam partook in order to stay with his wife and fulfill those commandments as well. They didn't know what the real consequences would be for eating the fruit, but they stood by each other and their first thoughts were how they could obey the rest.

“In our increasingly secular society, it is as uncommon as it is unfashionable to speak of Adam and Eve or the Garden of Eden or of a “fortunate fall” into mortality. Nevertheless, the simple truth is that we cannot fully comprehend the Atonement and Resurrection of Christ and we will not adequately appreciate the unique purpose of His birth or His death-in other words, there is no way to truly celebrate Christmas or Easter-without understanding that there was an actual Adam and Eve who fell from an actual Eden, with all the consequences that fall carried with it.”

I see it as when someone tells you all about going to lagoon and you've never been to lagoon you've never been on a roller coaster. It can be so exciting to think about but also a little scary. When I finally got married and I wanted my babies I just wanted my baby so bad. I didn't think about potty training I didn't think about sassy brats I thought about my babies and having my children and that is what the Lord wanted us to do that's all I ever wanted to be was a mom and as infertility happened and I had to work so hard to get those babies I know how easy well not easy but I know how Eve could pick yes I'll take the fruit because I want those babies come whatever else comes with it.
