The cast of Come From Away perform at the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard.
Based on a true story, Come From Away is about the 38 planes of passengers who were diverted to
Newfoundland, Gander after the airspace closed following 9/11. The Gander community opened their homes, churches, schools and community centres for the “come from aways” and the show shares some of the stories that took place.
The show was nominated for nine Olivier Awards, including; Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Clive Carter and Robert Hands), Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Rachel Tucker) and Mastercard Best New Musical.
You can book tickets to see Come From Away here: officiallondontheatre.com/sho...
The Olivier Awards with Mastercard were held in the spectacular Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 7 April 2019. Hosted by Jason Manford, the ceremony celebrates the best of British theatre from the previous year. UK viewers can watch the full show on ITV player. (www.itv.com/hub/itv)

Proud Newfoundlander, proud of what this show represents. The accents aren't 100% accurate, but close - we're primarily descended from Irish and English settlers, and our seclusion from the rest of Canada until the 50s and 60s has allowed us to hang onto the unique accents ☺️

I think the women do a good job with the accents but some of the men are terrible - you can hear that they are clearly British doing an accent (especially 1:35 , 2:00, and 3:08)

I love how all the musicians stand up while still playing their instruments. It really shows not only how well they know their pieces, but also the soul shared by every single person on that stage. My wife is a huge theater buff, so we go to NYC a few times a year to see a few shows. We've seen pretty much every big hit show, and I can honestly say, this is probably my favorite. I'm not as big a theater fan as my wife, but I do enjoy a good show. Still, even with a really good show, I tend to get a little antsy near the end and start looking at my watch to see when it's going to be over. With this show though, I can honestly say, I never once looked at my watch, I was so engaged. In fact, I actually found myself wishing the show was longer. We saw it on Broadway a few years ago and now we have tickets to see it in Boston in three weeks. I can hardly wait!

Thanks for adding this!! Most people don't realize the intense training just to make "NORMAL SPEECH" audible from a stage, let alone a SONG while you're doing cardio! (Throw in intense accent training ... that's way better than the average person can do). Unless an accent (thus everyone who speaks it to make in an accent) has PREFECT enunciation, pitch, & nuance to understand it clearly for 200+ people ... NO accent is going to be "perfect" on a stage. Because people don't speak perfectly. But speaking perfectly complete with lazy volume & muffled vowels, etc. runs the risk of NOT telling your story. That would reeeeeeally defeat the point of your show. (Unlike film, there's no living room volume button & subtles in a theater). ... Finally, yea, at first I thought the were a bit over-exaggerated, but after hearing real interviews of the people they represent, I was impressed how spot on they were. 👍

About half the performers were actually Newfoundlanders, so I would guess that their accents are either real, or that they're deliberately modifying their real accents in order to be understandable from the stage. But it's hard to get the accent actually *wrong* when it's your own. 😂

I am an Ontario high school social studies teacher and I became aware of this story long before the musical was written. In March 2014 I flew to Gander to look into this story. My friends invited Mayor Elliott to dinner and I recall him telling me that he hoped that the big heartedness of Gander and surrounding communities might a bit of a slight counterpoint to the horrors in Manhattan at that time. I will never forget him telling me that.

So me and my family are from NYC. Sadly, we never talked about 9/11 after. A lot of New Yorkers didn't talk about it because it was too painful. When we saw this musical, it was the first time we talked about it. We realized we each had whole oceans in our hearts that needed to spill out. We had bottled it up and never thought it was weird. This musical is the reason we finally opened up about that day. It's the reason why we are finally healing wounds we forgot were there.

The thing that makes this show so great is that on top of being a legitimately inspiring story about the best of humanity, it also deals with the tragedy of the events it is based around in a way that, yes, does give them the appropriate weight so that it pervades the entire musical, but it does it with enough levity, humour and honest-to-God dignity to keep the mood afloat.

In had the privilege to see this show last night (27/01/20) and it blew my mind - absolutely love musical theatre and this show is among the top shows I have seen - with an incredible message. I have read the reviews here and most folk seem to be in agreement that this is an incredible piece of theatre with an amazing message - as quoted in the program - 'on 9/11 we saw the worst that could happen, but around 7000 people saw the best of humanity' - the best of humanity in this instance represented by the good folk of Gander/Newfoundland. Lets look at this for what it is - a SUPERB piece of musical theatre recounting the story of some truly amazing individuals. I'm a little dismayed by some of the folk leaving reviews complaining about the 'poor accents'. I as a British person would never recognize a Newfoundland accent if I heard it and whilst I understand that a true Newfoundlander will of course be proud and protective of their accent, for goodness sake give the cast a break - they are doing their best with what I understand to be a very precise and individual accent and this piece of theatre is not about whether the accent is 100% accurate, more celebrating the warmth and generosity of the owners of this accent. In my opinion the cast WITHOUT EXCEPTION did an amazing job - with the accents and also with performing the show.... hats off to them .....! I can't wait to see it again!

Saw this last night at the Phoenix in London. I couldn’t believe the energy on stage. The end of Welcome To The Rock is one of the rare moments when the show pauses. It’s 100 minutes of rapid fire changes of characters, costumes, accents and sets, as the show moves from high spirits, uproariously funny moments, to deeply moving set pieces. These sad and serious pieces were so intense, the whole theatre was deathly quiet. Of the musicals I’ve seen, I loved Cats on stage and West Side Story on film. Come From Away is right up there.

They won a choreography award not just because they are moving chairs and tables the entire act but for most of the show the chair or prop they move isn't their own. 1:55 for a small example here. Additionally, i think they are able to pack so much meaning into the movements. The "Here at the Edge" moment where they point to their front foot and lean forward at like 3:34? Amazeballs.

I saw this show twice, two separate tours, and my god. It's probably the most impactful piece of media I've ever seen. 'Prayer' still gives me chills, as well as "Jesus H. Oz, turn on the radio." I know I probably sound pretentious right now, but I'm being honest. Come From Away is probably the best show I've ever seen. Granted, it's the only Broadway quality thing I've ever seen, but still.

I think the reason I’m so moved is because even though I was about 9 and in California, I was at a day care with a girl about 7 who lost are aunt in the crash. I just remember her coming back after a few days still visibly upset that she wasn’t ever going to see someone so close to her any more.
