Thank you for this useful video. I had never realized the way you use come and bring when you imagine yourself in the other's person position. So it is always going to be come and bring in that context? I mean if I say: 'We'd love to GO' and 'what can we TAKE to your party', it will have a different meaning? or it could be possible that the person I am talking to will understad the same? I will appreciate your help.
@SimpleEnglishVideos9 жыл бұрын
Enrique Mesias Hi Enrique, great question! I think this issue of imagining yourself in the position of your interlocutor might be a matter of politeness. I don't know about us 'always' doing it, but it is certainly going to be much more frequent for us to say 'We'd love to come. What can we bring'. It would sound strange to say 'We'd love to go. What can we take?' and it might even confuse the person you're talking to. They might think you imagine the party is in a different place and not their home. Similarly, if someone shouts out 'Dinner's ready' the response would have to be 'I'm coming' and not 'I'm going. Another example, if the postman knocks on our front door, I'd shout 'I'm coming' to the postman as I rush to answer it. And if jay's in the house and I want to tell him I'm going to answer the door so he doesn't need to, I'd shout 'Don't worry, I'm going.' And something else that I didn't mention explicitly in the video - we use come and bring to talk about the location where your interlocutor is OR where your interlocutor WILL BE. E.g. A: 'We're thinking of going for a picnic in the park tomorrow. Do you want to come?' 'Oh we'd love to come'. What can we bring?'

Hi, Try and Speak English. Carry is what we do to something else rather than something we do ourselves. When support the weight of something and move it to a different place, we carry it. Hope that helps. You might like this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZu1d5itdtB3p7s

Is it also possible to use the word "get" for the word "take" ? for example: " I can take you to school, if you want me to." " I can get you to school, if you want me to."
@SimpleEnglishVideos7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. 'Take' is more common and also note that the meaning is very slightly different. If you're going to take them you are going to drive them there yourself. If you're going to get them there, you might drive them yourself or you might arrange for someone else to drive them there.
