Please help me! I've read lots of grammar English pages, inlcuding some big pages such as: Cambridge and British council. And they say that we just can use ' would' with Wish for our annoyance or dissatisfaction about something or someone, so we use Would if we want them to change their behaviors. I thought everyone'd always follow this rule, but not. When i read some more resourses or watch videos of some native English teachers, they also use Would with Wish if they want things to happen in the future( not just for annoyance). I've considered whether ' would' in 'wish' clause has only one meaning which is about annoyance and dissastisfaction or it is about both annoyance and future. Thank you in advance for your explanation. 😍😍
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chien. Vicki here. Sorry for the slow reply. Yes, would can have a lot of different uses and meanings in English. We often use it to express our annoyance eg I wish you would stop making that noise (I don't like it when you do that and I want you to change your behaviour.) But it doesn't have to express annoyance. It could just express a desire. eg. I wish it would stop raining because then we could go to the beach. Hope this helps.

@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Great question. When we use wish with would to talk present wishes, it's generally to complain about something, or talk about something that we want to change. Hello Vicki and Jay! ♥ Thanks again for this greeeeeeeeeeeat video lesson! May I ask? When I say: "I wish I were younger." --> So there is subliminal regret? But is it also ok to say: "I wish I would be younger?" --> Does this sound annoyed for a native speaker? Or can I use both expressions interchangably? Btw... Carter is super cute! Im totally in love with dogs! I wish I could adopt one, but my apartment is too small :(
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefanie. Yes, 'I wish I were younger' expresses regret. 'I wish I would be younger' isn't something we'd say though. We use that structure to express annoyance, so 'I wish he/she/it would (do x) If we're expressing annoyance about ourselves, it would be something like 'I wish I had gone to bed earlier last night' or 'I wish I were taller.' - and yes, both of those are regrets as well.

Hi Inas. 'Class' is a group noun and in British English we can say either 'the class was...' or 'the class were...' In American English, it's a little more complicated. Americans would generally say things like 'The class was on a field trip yesterday' because they'd be referring to the class as a whole unit. 'Were' would be wrong in this sentences. If they were referring to individuals in the group though it could be were. E.g. The class were called up one by one to write their names on the board. There's a little information about group nouns in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnjVd3RtgceYiMk

Hold on a second wish+ would+ have+ the past participle. Wish+ had+ past participle. I wish you hadn't eaten the whole cake. I wish you wouldn't have eaten the whole cake. Are these two sentences corrected?
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question. Yes, both sentences are correct, but the second one would be much less frequent. We're just less likely to say it.

Quite possibly Sanaya, but I'm not sure I understand. Is this a grammar question or a question about abbreviations?

Dr teachers i want to ask something not related to this topic but i hope you people will answer me . Question is that Is this sentence correct? @ Not any of the students is funny. And @Not any of water spill when the girl carries the bucket carefully Thanks.
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hello Tabish and welcome to our channel. The first sentence sounds a bit awkward. I'd probably say 'None of the students are funny'. Similarly, for the second sentence, I'd probably say 'None of the water spilt (Jay would spell it spilled because he's American). Hope this helps.

Bundle of thanks.... Of course but i just wanted .... Are grammatically these sentences correct?
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Then the answer is no. We'd say them differently. Check my examples.

Is your name Vicki ir it’s an abbreviation to Victoria?
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi Canal. In formal documents my name is Victoria. In practice, the only person who has ever called me that was a very strict ballet teacher I had when I was nine. :-)
