Be careful with those Frixon pens. The heat from the "eraser" is what makes it disappear. I left a notepad filled with notes written with Frixon in a hot car and the heat from the car erased the entire notebook! So Google to the rescue. If you put it in the freezer it will mostly come back. Though some of the stuff I really wanted to erase came back too. Also - we count our vacations as school days too - always learning so why not? Ours are usually road trips to national parks though.

Thank you for the heads-up about the Frixon pens! I would have never guessed! I often count vacation as school days too. :) It's true... they are always learning.

Joshua Nelson that happened to me in college. Was taking a 6 class load, left my bag in the car...lost ALL my notes for ALL my classes 3 days before finals 😢 luckily my best friend was in my classes or had other friends who had taken it last semester.

I personally have my kids do year-round schooling. I have only 6 weeks of planned vacation time in total for the year. Plus we take holidays off and my kids get their birthday off from doing school. Plus if for any reason we have to take more time off we can. It tends to be that I school 5days a week and I take a break every three months. I take two weeks off at the end/beginning of the new year around Christmas. Then I take a week at the end of March/begging of April. Then the next break will be two weeks at the end of June/beginning of July. Then I take are last week-long break at the end of September/being of October. I don't have a start date or end date for a school as a whole. I start the kids doing school as soon as they have their 3rd birthday that following Monday. I start them in pre-school and then as soon as they complete the pre-school curriculum I move them on the kindergarten. I most cases all my kids are in kindergarten just around the time they are turning 4. I like to start them a year earlier then what most people do and it works fine for my kids. They just keep working on school until they finish the curriculum they have and they move on to the next. This way they move through a lot of stuff. But in all, I have my kids only take 6 weeks off a year. We are a Canadian/English family I have to make sure they are getting the best of both worlds. I want them to get the full National curriculum benefits and the Alberta education benefits. I do have them take the standardized tests in both places. Basically, have them doing two curriculum at the same time. But I don't have them do all of the work. I just make sure that they are doing what is required of each of the nations. This means I make sure that they are reading the right books and at the right math level for the more advanced of the two. Plus in places like history, they have to take more than one. I don't like that in A levels they restricted them what to take. I am going to make sure I have all my kids get there LA/English, Math, History/Social studies, and Science all the way to the A level year 13 and Grade 12 level. I feel as if this is the best way for my kids to succeed.

I want to thank you again for your videos, Janelle. They are so helpful. I have so little time to spend watching/listening to youtube videos, and your videos are such a blessing becuase you are an experienced homeschooler and have wisdom to share, and you are an effective communicator (some youtubers mean well but you can listen for 10 minutes and not really learn anything). So thank you so much!

I love those pens! Amazon. also have packages with more colors, but I have the same one you've got. great for planning and bullet journal as well. as for planning, we always just start by Sept 1st. I like that there's a holiday shortly after, makes weaning into school a little more graceful. we also grow most of our own produce, so towards the end of the year we have to spend a lot more time working outside. so we do short days towards summer, and also have a co-op one day a week, (oi) so we do school year round except I try and take at least 2 weeks off for sure. I will check out the calendar you spoke of! it's so hard to find I've that fit us. they always leave off August or start in January. Thank you kindly!

Great Video! I plan a lot like you with a calendar and fun pens:) We run 34 weeks and break it down even further into quarters so I can plan in small bite size chunks. From there I make sure and list all of the read-aloud books I want to read to my kids, poetry and art history we will do together, projects and field trips and maybe science topics. It makes it easier to reach goals if I look at the year in 8-week bites! Most of my big subjects just run by themselves but I find all the little special things I miss if I do not plan them in:)
