first, props to that guy for shooting his shot. Second, Sarah's swing was waaaaaaaaayyyy better once you helped her with her stance/set-up. You certainly have her on the right track. My wife went through this two years ago and it was amazing how quickly she improved with proper instruction like yours.

I know for me my eureka moment came with my back swing. I really slowed it down to make sure it was on the perfect plane. Once I did that, I was able to release on the apex and it really squared everything else for me. Hope she doesn't get too frustrated though, it took me years to start to be able to drive well.

Sarah's swing reminds me exactly of my girlfriend's swing. It's almost as if the club is too heavy for them and they're trying to unsuccessfully muscle it through the swing. I definitely give Sarah props for trying to learn the proper way and grinding through it. My gf gets to a point where she doesn't want to listen and starts trying to muscle it again.

The Number one thing I see from Claire, my future wife is that, she is allowing Sarah's head to see where the ball is going after a swing. This is a big No No especially if she can barely make contact. Claire, instead of putting the club behind her head, place it in front of her head so she can only focus on club to ball contact. Who care's where the ball goes at this point. Ricky Bobby Out

great job both of you. i’ve helped pure beginners. it’s TOUGH for both teacher and student lol. i found slightly teeing it up and ball position on front foot helps a ton for confidence of beginners. just getting ball in air is exciting. they tend to swing up at it. interaction with ground is a big challenge can work on once have a decent swing built. keep it up excited to see the progress.

To relate it to baseball, when she swings try to hit it over the second baseman's head or out to the right fielder. She is trying to lift the ball instead of hitting in down to the ground, and she is finishing below her left shoulder. i played a lot of baseball and softball and went through the same struggles, worm burners, boomerang slices to the right. I could drive the ball 320 yards,120 yards forward and 120 yards to the right. then someone told me to hit it into the ground out to right field. and i thought well i can't get much worse. So, i went to the range and tried it, holy smokes it went straight and 250 yards on the fly. By the end of the bucket, it was going 275 -290 w/ 90% fairways i couldn't believe it.

I’ve seen a lot worse swings from beginners and I think she is doing a handful of good things with young swing. I think it’s important that she has a good swing coach like you because that will help her from developing bad swing mechanics on her own from the beginning. For a lot of people, the longer you have been practicing a bad swing mechanic for, the harder it is to fix it because it’s been ingrained so much in their muscle memory of their golf swings. It won’t be long before she has enough good swing habits that she will see how much fun golf is when she gets a little bit more consistent in hitting better shots.

I think she is trying to hit the ball and when you do that you change your swing. she starts off at the beginning of her swing good but on her down swing she tries to hit the ball and the swing changes way off course. Just learn that swinging technique and swing at the ball don't think about hitting it because you will

Do you ever tell golfers to try to hit it different places on the clubface? Like sometimes new golfers have some decent swings but where they think they need to swing to hit it to be solid is totally wrong. I feel like if sarah tried to hit it more towards the toe of the club at the end she would have been hitting some nice shots. Like if she tries to hit the toe she might actually hit the center and vise versa lol

Sorry but you are throwing too much at her for a beginner. Have her do what I call the 9 to 3 drill. Back swing only comes up to 9o'clock and then forward swing only goes to 3 o'clock. I know it sound overly simple but trust me after she hits about 50 she will be hitting the balls consistently. Use the same mid iron the whole time. Then go to a 10 o'cock to 2 o'clock muscle memory will take over and she will be fine. The other thing I notice is that she tends to lean to the right rather than turn to the right. But the 9 to 3 will help solve that too because there is no sway or movement. Hope this helps. I have taught quite a few beginners and this works.

If you can get in front of mirror, slowly look at your swing without a club, but hands about 2inches apart doing 5-7 swings using a dail on a clock, 15-20 reps. Then grab a club 5-7 swing or 1/4 swing. Then slowly work your way to 3-9 swing repeat. Use your body like before. Thanks

Do we know Sarah's athletic background? Maybe Tennis? Golf is a Tennis Backhand of sorts or Softball a batting swing on an inclined plane. Monty S. used to have a drill where he had beginners hit a baseball off of a standard height batting tee. Then he would move the tee lower and lower until they were hitting a ball off the ground. Claire, one thing. I think Sarah yanks the club way too far inside on the backswing which makes her lift the club and from there it's Steep City coming down. A cone at hosel length during the backswing and parallel to the foot line would help. Outside the cone going back - inside the cone swinging forward. It's a Mike Bender Drill.

You're doing great Sarah please persevere. It's very easy to get discouraged when you have a great range session one week and then can't hit a ball the next session - it still happens to me after 15 years of playing! It's very easy to overload beginner golfers with multiple swing desirables but the most important ones are correct setup and as Claire mentioned watch the best golfers swing tempos before practice as it's a vital element of the golf swing.

Even though she can’t see the ball flight results YET, her swing has improved dramatically! Next time you guys are out I would introduce the concept of hitting down into the ball. Every beginner golfer believes they have to help the ball up which is what creates a lot scooping. But if you get a beginner golfer to think hitting more down into the ball they will often get the ball into the air more consistently because the club head is made to compress.
