As someone who grew up relying on thrift stores for clothing, these prices are absolutely devastating for the population thrift stores were originally intended for. Who can even spend $150 on a jacket?? I don't blame the thrifting trend, but seeing stores take advantage and pricing out the costumers who truly needed affordable clothing breaks my heart 😫

@@princessses2892 U.K. charity shops are different. U.S. thrift stores are primarily for profit businesses, unless explicitly attached to a nonprofit, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army. So, "catching on" to the trend that pieces can sell for more is to their profit, without thought for the people who truly need these stores to exist.

It must vary by location. Where I live goodwill is flat prices. So like jackets may all be 10 bucks. So you may find a good one worth way more than 10 or a stained beat up one that’s not worth it. But they aren’t priced by brand. Other thrift shops do though 💁🏻‍♀️

i feel like thrift stores that get things donated for free shouldn’t be able to charge more than like $40 for anything and that’s already high. I would understand if a store curates their things or pays people for what they give the store but if the clothes are free, there’s no excuse.

@@SophieDP1 i hadn't thought of that. some of the big thrift stores in the US that say they are charities or part of their proceeds go to charity have been found to be big rip offs. a tiny amount actually goes to charity and the rest of it goes into paying their ceo's. also some of them take advantage of disabled people by saying they're being so nice by giving them jobs but then pay them less than minimum wage. if i knew the majority of the proceeds were going to a good cause then I would feel better about paying higher prices but that's just not the case.

I’m 67 and in the 70’s I LOVED the midi look. I wore my denim ones with riding boots and almost everything was sandals. The whit, black, and flowered dress that you showed would have been right up my alley back then! Cute finds!

I used to depend on thrifted clothes when we were going through a really rough time ((for a long time)), and these prices?? I could've never afforded that. Makes me sad for people who depend on the thrift. Been there.

I agree with you, I have been thrifting my whole life and the prices are definitely ridiculous. Like you said these are used items that have been donated and the purpose for thrift stores is to help low income families and people their prices are totally ridiculous defeats the purpose. I remember I went to a thrift shop here in New York called unique and I saw a dress that I had purchased at old navy for 9.99 and I liked but lost in Sandy floods and I was excited like oh great I could replace it. But when I looked at the price I was mind blown they were asking for 24.99 I was like no way. They are taking advantage of the market most people are now thrifting so I guess that may be a reason. My local thrift stores sort clothing by COLOR instead of by size, which makes it super difficult to find anything 🙃 this is why I mostly look for hard goods (CDs, games, books, decor, etc) when thrifting.

I work for Old Navy and that black dress is from last year. If it’s still floating around in a store somewhere in clearance, it’s probably like $3.99. 😢 I can’t believe how much $ thrift stores sell ON clothing for. Things I have seen were usually cheaper in-store on sale for brand new!

hear me out - the blue/white striped dress as a two piece set!! i think the top was really cute and the bottom of the skirt too, it was just like the middle part that didn’t do anything. just cut it in half and sew an elastic to the skirt and you’ll have a super cute set!! i’ve done it with a dress that litterally looked like a potato sack on me (🥲) and it turned out great (and i’m NOT a pro with the sewing machine, that i can tell you haha)!

$46 for a jacket with holes is ridiculous! I've noticed the thrift prices going up here in NZ too. But I did get the most incredible 100% wool Hugo Boss blazer in a delicious green shade for NZD$30 that I know I'll wear for years and years.

@@shentani13 Oh yay! Where in NZ are you going? I'd say look out for stores called Save Mart - they're huge! Small towns, look out for things like "St. Vincent de Paul" and things that say Op Shop. Exciting!

I live in Boston and thankfully the goodwills here are still pretty cheap, but I did notice that in LA and Portland that prices at goodwill skyrocketed. It’s probably bc of the popularity of thrifting, so gentrification.
