thank you for another great Japan vid! I do have a q! how much kanji/katakana/hiragana and spoken Japanese is helpful for navigating Japan and finding the good stuff? any recommendations for how to practice?

Kathleeen your pink shoes are so adorable! Can you tell what brand they are?

@@cloudgoose hi! You honestly don’t need any and you’d still be able to get by, especially with translation apps for things like menus! 💕 however I found it super helpful (and fun!) to know how to read hiragana/katakana and some basic vocab so you can interact a little more seamlessly with the folks around you. I think Tofugu is a great place to learn writing/reading & Japanese From Zero (here on KZbin) for grammar💫

Kathleen idk if this is weird to say but you got SO GOOD at video editing, I mean ur videos were always very well executed but I feel like this one just is NEXT LEVEL well done, the music, the atmopshere, the overcutting sounds (except the coughing child lmao) I feel like I just watched a million bucks video, thank you for taking us with you! Absolutely love when travelling and you have a weird awkward encounters with a well meaning local. In a Finnish laundromat an older women insisted that I wait while she went to get her husband who spoke English and came back with him and a couple of beers for me and my husband and we all sat around having a stilted conversation over a beer. I could tell her husband had absolutely no idea why he was there. And yes, we drank those beers asap, shook their hands and went home with clean laundry and a funny story. BTW, Finland one of the nicest places we ever visited!

Japan looks so dreamy! This was such a cool window into the thrift culture in Japan, and the outro of the live guitar playing Close To You was the kind of thing I see on KZbin and think "I cannot believe this is free to watch." This was such a treat.

I’ve been meaning to say this for a while on one of Kathleen’s videos, but wow the music selections always hit the right spot. It’s probably because our music tastes have a lot of overlap, but I always feel a special joy whenever she edits in a familiar video game soundtrack or some chill bossa nova. In this upload, I especially liked how she would edit tracks under certain clips but then allow diegetic music to play and carry us over into the next whimsical scene. Just a beautiful video!! 💖

Oh my gosh! That Salvation Army in Wada is a family secret of mine 😳 I grew up in the neighborhood, and we went every week, I still have uncles and aunties that go religiously. When you become a regular, you know all the vendors by name, and they even keep items for you in the back. I'm very glad that you found it! They have more than enough antique to go around, so more people that respectfully shop the better. 😄

Eeeee! Thank you so much for taking us with you! The way I experience your cinematography and editing, your awe and delight at what you are encountering really comes through in the video. I saw your wonder at the beauty around you in the nature shots, even when your expressive face was not in frame. You brought me into your joy as you interacted with a new-to-me place, and it was thrilling! Also, in every glimpse of Gus, it seems that he carries a joy and wonder at the world so similar to yours, which just feels so fitting. And the few times you filmed him across from you, he was beaming at you. Love to see it. Thank you for generously sharing your experiences with us!

If you're ever in Osaka, my wife and I had a blast in Ame-mura(America Town)! A lot of pricey import stores, but there was still so much variety in a relatively small area. A second-hand kimono shops is also a wonderful place to find, they usually have gorgeous pieces for shockingly low prices considering the quality of the fabrics!

The collection of little porcelain and ceramic items at the Salvation Army place was adorable! Were they for something specific or just decor? I love seeing that there’s plenty of awesome crochet items wherever you go!
