The tax rates are very high, real estate is skyrocketing, With the amount you need to buy a house you can get a better one in US, also the free health care is a joke.. There is also luxury tax.. Sofware engineer is a regulated profession in Canada. It is regulated by province. In Ontario, it is Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). You need to study a 4-yr Bachelor degree in Engineering to become Software Engineer. If you study a diploma in college, you are a software developer or programmer, not a software engineer.

My recommendation is to study electrical engineering (4 yr Bachelor degree) in Canada if you can afford it. Electrical engineers do a lot of programming as well, using engineering principles. (1) Electrical engineer is one of 24 prioritized STEM occupations announced by IRCC in 2023 for easier PR; (2) engineer is one of 63 eligible occupations for TN-1 visa of USMCA agreement (for Canadians to work as tempory workers in USA); (3) engineer is less prone to ageism and outsourcing; (4) engineering is regulated by province (barriers are set up to prevent non-engineers from doing engineering work); (5) electrical engineer is an in-demand occupation in Canada. You need to keep your CGPA above 3 out of 4.

No commerce jobs are in the 82 prioritized occupations by IRCC in 2023. If you are in commerce, you will need high CRS score (recent all-program Express Entry draws with CRS cutoff at 511, 505, 517, and 496) or PNP for ITA (invitation to apply). Look for a province for easier PNP. It is not easy to relocate to another province for PNP after graduation as many provinces already changed their PNP policies. I recommend Accounting if you want to study commerce.

One tip (circulating in Internet) is to avoid big cities such as Sydney and Melbourne for easier PR pathway. There is a lot more redtape (skills assessment) and fees to get PR in Australia.
