Very good lesson on critical listening. Two strikes with bass and kick to start the run which leads into the third strike which is really the beginning of the guitar riff. That type of give and go in the composition allowed the mellow tone of the guitar shine through. Brilliant mixing by Geoff Emerick, too.

I said the third strike is the first note of the guitar riff. The “Give and Go” between the bass and the guitar, completes the musical phrase without saturating the mix, and Ringo’s drum fill brings it back around to the beginning of the “loop”. Listen with good headphones to the original recording. For another example, listen closely to the interaction between the bass, the fender rhodes piano and the guitar on the Steely Dan song “Hey Nineteen” to hear a three way handoff of the musical phrase.

Surely it was mixed by George Martin? And engineered by Geoff emerick?

Before anything was committed to magnetic tape, I’m sure the Beatles worked out how to make that phrase sound cool, or perhaps George Martin made a subtle comment about orchestration, so the Bm-A-G-A refrain makes the song POP.

I AGREE. The real MCCARTNEY was a genius. The new guy came along in late 1966(William Shepard) and supposedly played that riff on Abbey Road. He also played every bass line from sgt.pepper through their last album. I prefer the original style of playing by James Paul McCartney. I prefer his voice and his stage presence. The way JPM could belt out a tune and rock out without looking at his frets was impressive. The imposter constantly watches his fret hand while he tries to rock out. He is a poor substitute. Rest in Peace J.P.M.

As someone who took bass lessons yesrs ago, I always had a good ear for stuff like this, often correcting my teacher on how certain things were played! I remember a few times he'd even pause and go "damn, I've never actually noticed that" or something similar lol

@thesupergamer5894 6 ай бұрын
@Underlyinghealthconditions I'd agree to disagree... it's important to find your own playstyle, and when you write/play your own stuff it's fine to go ham on it... but as we clearly heard in this example, playing the bassline wrong just sounds so much worse...
@Underlyinghealthconditions
@Underlyinghealthconditions 6 ай бұрын
@@thesupergamer5894 a great musician will never play the same riff exactly the same twice in a song. In the video he’s still hitting the right notes to carry the song just adding a pick on the string. McCarthy sometimes would add that third strike to change stuff up while live. It’s not a song definer adding that third strike

Shit that is such a sweet idea... it makes you focus all of the articulation into the slide, what a great little bit 😢
@MawcDrums
@MawcDrums 10 ай бұрын
SO TRUE. This same thing happens when learning certain guitar solos with long bending. You need to be rhythmic with the bends in a very specific way that reminds me of "articulating the slide" as you said. It's actually way more difficult than I expected as it's essentially a completely new muscular rhythmic technique you have to learn. You may play the final note on the and of 3, but bend to the resolved ACTUAL final note on the 1 of the next bar. Once I learned to articulate those bends rhythmically without PLAYING the final note it totally unlocked an entire new world of illusion of speed.
